Focusing on work by Jorge Luis Borges, Samuel Beckett and J.M. Coetzee, Literary Cynics explores the relationship between literature and cynicism to consider what happens when authors write ...themselves into their art, against the rhetoric of authority. Rose takes as his starting point three moments of aesthetic crisis in the careers of these literary cynics: Borges's parables of the 1950s, Beckett's plays of the 1980s, and Coetzee's pedagogic novels of the 2000s. In their transition to 'late style', the works reflect their writers' abiding concern with particular conceptions of rhetoric and aesthetic form. Literary Cynics combines accounts of these 'late' works with classic, lesser known, and archival texts by the three writers, from Coetzee's Disgrace to Beckett's letters, as well as detailed analysis of cynicism, both ancient and modern, as a philosophical and political movement.
En un artículo de 2001 Óscar Steimberg introdujo una sugerente categoría llamada “humor tonto”. Entre sus características Steimberg menciona la exploración, el infantilismo de la línea, ruptura con ...la representación naturalista y con la destreza al dibujar. En este artículo tomaré como corpus tres revistas publicadas en la década de 1940: Cascabel y Don Fulgencio de Argentina, y La Codorniz de España. Muchos de los humoristas que en ellas participaban comparten los rasgos del “humor tonto” delineados más arriba. A través de los ejemplos presentes en ellos, desarrollaré una profundización de la tipología del humor tonto desarrollada por Steimberg, y desplegaré su genealogía.

Background
Skin rejuvenation is a widely sought‐after goal, prompting advancements in laser technology for noninvasive and effective treatments. Ablative lasers, in particular, have evolved ...to address diverse skin concerns, with fractional ablative lasers offering better‐tolerated outcomes. The introduction of a novel ablative Thulium pulsed laser, based on Thulium‐doped Yttrium aluminum Perovskite (Tm:YAP) crystal, delivers precise and controlled skin rejuvenation by allowing customization of ablative microcolumns.
Methods
A pilot in vivo study was conducted on the abdominal skin of a live female pig. Using the Laser Team Medical (LTM) prototype laser, treatments were administered with varying coagulation settings (minimal and maximum) and energies (32, 80, 120, and 160 mJ per microcolumn). Biopsies were harvested, fixed, and stained for subsequent analysis. The penetration depth and width of the microcolumns were evaluated.
Results
Low coagulation settings produced ablative microcolumns with thermal affected zones of 160 µm width, while high coagulation settings resulted in wider zones of 400–530 µm. The ablation cavities' width was estimated to be less than 100 µm in both settings. The novel 1940 nm pulsed laser demonstrated superior microcolumn properties, offering potential advantages such as shorter downtime and increased efficacy compared to existing fractional ablative lasers.
Conclusion
This study presents encouraging preliminary results regarding the efficacy and safety of the first ablative 1940 nm pulsed laser. The results show ablative microcolumns thinner than the counterpart devices, showing the device safety and potential higher efficacy along with short downtime. The LTM novel ablative 1940 nm pulsed laser holds immense potential for enhancing skin rejuvenation treatments due to its superior microcolumns properties. The versatility of this laser can open new treatment procedures and may extend to different areas of dermatology.
Walking the Gendered Tightrope analyzes the gendered expectations for women in high offices through the examples of British Prime Minister Theresa May and U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Even ...at their highest positions, and while completing their greatest achievements, both May and Pelosi faced gendered critiques and intraparty challenges to their leadership. While other books have analyzed the barriers to higher office that women face, this book reveals how women in positions of power are still forced to balance feminine stereotypes with the perception of power as masculine in order to prove their legitimacy. By examining intraparty dynamics, this book offers a unique comparison between a majoritarian presidential and Westminster parliamentary system. While their parties promoted Pelosi and May to highlight their progressive values, both women faced continually gendered critiques about their abilities to lead their caucuses on difficult policy issues, such as the Affordable Care Act and two Trump impeachment votes for Nancy Pelosi, or finishing Brexit for Theresa May. Grounded in the legislative literature from the United States and Britain, as well as historical accounts and personal interviews, Walking the Gendered Tightrope contributes to the fields of gender and politics, legislative studies, American politics, and British politics.

Objectives
To evaluate the safety, efficacy and ≥36 months outcomes of endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) by means of 1940 nm laser with radial fiber for the treatment of truncal vein insufficiency and ...compare the results to a historical cohort, obtained via reviewing the literature.
Methods
This prospective, non‐randomized, single‐center clinical study included 139 consecutive patients with 177 incompetent great saphenous (GSV, n = 135) and short saphenous veins (SSV, n = 42). The maximum laser power (Pmax. 10 W) and pullback velocity were adjusted individually (Vmax = 1 mm/s). The laser fiber was placed at the junction to the deep vein under duplex monitoring. Simultaneous phlebectomies were performed on all the patients. Regular follow up with clinical and duplex ultrasound examination (DUS) were carried out postoperatively at 1 month (1 M), 6 months (6 M), 12 months (12 M), 24 months (24 M), 36 months, and after that (≥36 M). The results were compared with three cohorts (total 616 EVLA procedures with 1470 nm laser and radial fiber) from literature (criteria: >100 procedures, follow‐up of ≥2 years).
Results
The follow‐up rate was 100%, 91%, 73%, 48%, and 23% of the truncal veins at 1, 6, 12, 24, and ≥36 M, respectively. In comparison to the literature using 1470, a lower average linear endovenous energy density (LEED) (53 vs. 77–82 J/cm) resulted in 100% (6 M) and 96.5% (24 M) occlusion rates, reduced local ecchymosis (2.2% vs. 3.2%–18.7%) and reduced average postoperative pain levels (1.3 vs. 2.18). Regarding adverse events, induration (1.1% vs. 1.8%), skin burns (0% vs. 0.45%), endovenous heat‐induced thrombus propagation (EHIT) in the deep veins (2.3% vs. 1.8%) and laser‐induced persistent paresthesia (2.2% vs. 0.5%–2.9%) were comparable. Recanalizations observed in this study (GSV 0, SSV 3) were asymptomatic and required no treatment. At ≥36 M reflux in the accessory veins was observed in 5% versus 10.5% of patients. Reintervention was required in none (0% vs. 21%). At >36 M, short average stump lengths of 1 cm (GSV) and 0.3 cm (SSV) were observed.
Conclusion
EVLA with 1940 nm laser with radial emitting fiber is as safe and effective as 1470 nm laser for the treatment of truncal vein insufficiency. Lower postoperative pain, low analgesic requirements, short convalescence add to patients’ comfort. EVLA with 1940 nm laser‐guided by intraoperative DUS permits reproducible placement of the radial fiber at the saphenofemoral and saphenopopliteal junction, enabling further studies to assess the effect of shorter stump length on patterns and frequency of recurrence without increased risk of EHIT.
Abstract
Close-kin marriage, by sustaining tightly knit family structures, may impede development. We find support for this hypothesis using U.S. state bans on cousin marriage. Our measure of cousin ...marriage comes from the excess frequency of same-surname marriages, a method borrowed from population genetics that we apply to millions of marriage records from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Using census data, we first show that married cousins are more rural and have lower-paying occupations. We then turn to an event study analysis to understand how cousin marriage bans affected outcomes for treated birth cohorts. We find that these bans led individuals from families with high rates of cousin marriage to migrate off farms and into urban areas. They also gradually shift to higher-paying occupations. We observe increased dispersion, with individuals from these families living in a wider range of locations and adopting more diverse occupations. Our findings suggest that these changes were driven by the social and cultural effects of dispersed family ties rather than genetics. Notably, the bans also caused more people to live in institutional settings for the elderly, infirm, or destitute, suggesting weaker support from kin.
