2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute. The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, as it was then called, was established in 1968 by then Deputy Prime Minister Dr Goh ...Keng Swee in order to enable the newly independent city-state better understand the region and its complexities. Since its establishment, ISEAS has dedicated itself to researching the political, economic and socio-cultural dynamics and trends in Southeast Asia for policymakers, scholars, and other relevant stakeholders. On 12 August 2015, the Institute was officially renamed ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute, in honour of Singapore's first President. This book presents three public lectures given to commemorate the Institute's Golden Anniversary. Professor Leonard Y. Andaya delivered the first lecture entitled "Developments in the Scholarship of Southeast Asian Studies" on 21 February 2018. The second public lecture was delivered by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on 13 March 2018. Professor Wang Gungwu delivered the final public lecture entitled "Before Southeast Asia: Passages and Terrains" on 3 October 2018. Collectively, these three public lectures exhort ISEAS to continuously reflect on its research agenda, the region, as well as the contemporary landscape and challenges it has to operate in.
Surveying the Avant-Garde examines the art and
literature of the Americas in the early twentieth century through
the lens of the questionnaire, a genre as central as the manifesto
to the history of ...the avant-garde.
Questions such as "How do you imagine Latin America?" and "What
should American art be?" issued by avant-garde magazines like
Imán , a Latin American periodical based in Paris, and
Cuba's Revista de Avance demonstrate how editors, writers,
and readers all grappled with the concept of "America,"
particularly in relationship to Europe, and how the questionnaire
became a structuring device for reflecting on their national and
aesthetic identities in print. Through an analysis of these
questionnaires and their responses, Lori Cole reveals how ideas
like "American art," as well as "modernism" and "avant-garde," were
debated at the very moment of their development and
consolidation.
Unlike a manifesto, whose signatories align with a single
polemical text, the questionnaire produces a patchwork of
responses, providing a composite and sometimes fractured portrait
of a community. Such responses yield a self-reflexive history of
the era as told by its protagonists, which include figures such as
Gertrude Stein, Alfred Stieglitz, Jean Toomer, F. T. Marinetti,
Diego Rivera, and Jorge Luis Borges.
The book traces a genealogy of the genre from the Renaissance
paragone , or "comparison of the arts," through the rise of
enquêtes in the late nineteenth century, up to the
contemporary questionnaire, which proliferates in art magazines
today. By analyzing a selection of surveys issued across the
Atlantic, Cole indicates how they helped shape artists' and
writers' understanding of themselves and their place in the
world.
Based on extensive archival research, this book reorients our
understanding of modernism as both hemispheric and transatlantic by
narrating how the artists and writers of the period engaged in
aesthetic debates that informed and propelled print communities in
Europe, the United States, and Latin America. Scholars of modernism
and the avant-garde will welcome Cole's original and compellingly
crafted work.

In the period after the end of WWII, Czechoslovak librarianship continued its development, especially in the legislative area, on the foundations built during the 1918–1938 period. Even in the post-war period, the General Public Libraries Act remained in force and there was a coordination center for educational activities which after the end of the war adopted its original name - Masaryk Institute of Adult Education.
However, after 1945, training and public librarianship were in a completely different social and political situation. The field of adult education and the public librarianship remained priority areas of interest for political representation and individual political parties that operated in post-war Czechoslovakia. The political representation of post-war Czechoslovakia cooperated intensively with the USSR, and the left-wing ideas had very strong position in the political and public life of the state. In the first part of the article, we study the efforts of the communists in the period 1945–1948 to control the public libraries, which were one of the most important elements of the educational system and were of importance, especially in the rural environment. The second part of the article focuses on the period 1948–1959. It shows the development in the field of legislation and on the examples of the activities of public libraries, it shows how they concentrated on their main task, i.e., how they worked with the reader.

Mari ...Yamamoto contends that the peace movement, which was organized in tandem with other activities to promote democratic, economic and humanitarian issues, served as a popular lever which helped to eliminate feudal remnants that lingered in Japanese society and people’s individual attitudes after the war, thereby modernizing the political process and the outlook of the ordinary Japanese.
The book includes extensive primary material such as letters, essays, memoirs and interviews. Specialists in Japanese history, peace studies and women’s studies especially will appreciate the richness of the text supporting Yamamoto’s narrative of how workers’ and women’s political awareness developed under the influence of organizational and ideological interests and contemporary events.

He challenges the common view that American thought and culture utterly succumbed in the 1940s to a conservative cold war consensus that put aside the reform ideology and social theory of the early twentieth century. Rather, expectations of the shift to a new social economy persisted and cannot be disregarded as one of the elements contributing to the revival of dissenting thought and practice in the 1960s.
Rooted in a politics of social liberalism, this vision held influence for roughly a half century, from its interwar origins until the right turn in American political culture during the 1970s and 1980s. In offering a historically based understanding of American postcapitalist thought, Brick also presents some current possibilities for reinvigorating critical social thought that explores transitional developments beyond capitalism.
