This article surveys the Australian data sources suited to the study of income inequality. Strengths and weaknesses of the data sources are discussed and a brief overview of inequality trends is ...presented. While there are several suitable data sources, each source has limitations for the purposes of ascertaining both the level of inequality at a point in time and trends in inequality over time. Drawing together the collective findings of the alternative data sources in part addresses the limitations of individual data sources, but there nonetheless remain significant sources of uncertainty about inequality levels and trends in Australia.
After the Great Recession, the popular press has noted a rebound in casino revenues in some states and localities, and some expect growth like before. However, there were trends indicating stagnating ...revenues before the recession, and casinos were shown not to be “recession‐proof” as revenues declined. Revenues have stagnated partially due to a saturation point being reached with regard to casino gaming. The growth rate of revenues and tax proceeds may follow a product life cycle curve. Introducing more venues may give a temporary boost to tax receipts, but trends indicate that large gains are over unless casinos re‐invent themselves.
This paper estimates structural vector autoregression models of output, the real exchange rate and trade balance for the group of seven leading advanced economies (G‐7). Unlike previous studies, we ...do not impose long‐run purchasing power parity as an identifying assumption; instead, the shocks underlying the model are structurally identified using a set of theory‐consistent sign restrictions. Empirical results show that nominal shocks account for most of the long‐run variability in trade balances across the G‐7 countries. We are able to attribute this finding to long‐run movements in the real exchange rate, as the real exchange rate is significantly affected by nominal shocks in the long run.

In recent years, operating subsidies in the USA increased considerably in response to public concerns over traffic congestion and air quality. In a panel of more than 600 transit firms over the ...period from 1991 to 2012, we find no significant relationship between subsidy and ridership.
We show that with a larger subsidy, a transit system operates a larger network but less intensively. At the same time, this subsidy influences service supply in such a way that the quality, as perceived by the traveller, suffers. This is reflected by lower costs of production.
This paper presents the results of the calculations of the dynamics and structure of human capital for the Russian economy according to the cost accumulation method. The sources of information and ...methods of these calculations are described.
A must-read for anyone interested in Eastern Europe, Russia, and the politics of natural resources, this book reveals the insights gained by looking at post-Soviet development and international ...relations issues not only from a Moscow-centered perspective, but from that of individual actors in other states.
Muss ein Staat seine Untaten bereuen, um außenpolitische Legitimität zu erhalten? Was bedeutet es, Kriegsverbrechen aufzuarbeiten?
This study applies the Sequential Panel Selection Method (SPSM) proposed by Chortareas and Kapetanios (2009) to investigate and assess the non-stationary properties of whether real GDP follows a ...trend stationary or a difference stationary process for Central Eastern European (CEE) countries. SPSM can classify the whole panel into a group of stationary series and a group of non-stationary series. We clearly identify how many and which series in the panel are stationary processes and provide robust evidence clearly indicating that per capita real GDP for CEE countries holds stationary for three countries. Our findings point out their per capita real GDP convergence is a mean reversion towards equilibrium values in a non-linear way. Our results have important policy implications for macroeconomic policy, modeling, testing and forecasting for these CEE countries under study.

In the 20 years since the Paris accords of 1991 brought peace to Cambodia, the country has undergone what can only be described as astounding change. From a polity where the entire fabric of society ...had been rent asunder through years of war and genocide, contemporary Cambodia is fast becoming a vibrant state and assuming a new position in the Asia-Pacific region. The contributions to this volume — many by prominent figures who were intimately connected with the process — describe the diverse strands of mediation and peace-building which went into the creation of the 1991 accords. The subsequent role of UNTAC and the 1993 general elections in the process of Cambodian revival and social rebuilding are also described. While not denying that obstacles and difficulties remain, the contributions outline the evolving economic, political, religious and human resource situations within Cambodia, while also examining the country's contemporary international relations. This book constitutes a particularly fitting testament to the 20 years of Cambodian reconstruction which have followed the 1991 peace accords.
