•A dynamic simulation framework was built using Bifrost, a plug-in for Autodesk Maya.•Our framework can simulate G-code scripts of multi-ingredient printed food objects in order to reduce physical ...print failures.•Successful simulation of a multi-ingredient printed food item was achieved and ground-truthed via physical experimentation.
Simulation environments for 3D-printed structures are crucial to assess failure modes prior to printing. Multi-ingredient additive manufacturing (AM) of food is particularly susceptible to failure due to differences in ingredient viscoelasticity. Current simulation software handles objects in their final fabricated form. Here, we present a simulation framework that digitally replicates the deposition process of disparate material pastes using a physics-based simulator. Our simulator takes a digital recipe file (G-code) as input and uses Bifrost—a plug-in for Autodesk Maya—to generate a digital replica of the 3D printing process. We ground truth our print simulator by successfully reproducing a custom designed seven-ingredient dessert. Designs that are dynamically simulated prior to being printed develops user intuition for stable structures, mitigates material waste, and enables faster proofing of printable designs to achieve structural and aesthetic creations.

Swimming crabs of the taxon Portunoidea show specialized, paddle‐shaped fifth pereiopods (P5), which play a role in these crabs' ability to swim. In this study, the morphology of the fifth pereiopod ...in swimming and non‐swimming crabs was studied in detail and the mobility in the articulations between podomeres was calculated from reconstructed three‐dimensional (3D)‐models. This way, we aimed to provide new estimates of kinematic parameters, and to answer the question on a possible homology of the P5 within several portunoid clades. We measured and compared podomere length ratios, orientations of the joint axes, and modeled single range of motion (sROM) of each joint as well as the total range of motion (tROM) of all joints of the P5 as a whole. Seven Portunoidea species, four of them belonging to the P5‐swimming crab morphotype (Liocarcinus depurator, Polybius henslowii, Callinectes sapidus, Portunus pelagicus) and three not belonging to this morphotype (Carcinus aestuarii, Portumnus latipes, and with uncertain status Carupa tenuipes) were compared with the non‐portunoids Sternodromia monodi, Ranina ranina, Raninoides bouvieri, Eriocheir sinensis, Varuna litterata, Ashtoret lunaris, and Cancer pagurus. The study was carried out using a combination of microcomputer tomography (μCT)‐techniques and 3D‐reconstructions. The μCT‐data were used to create surface models of the P5 in Amira, which were then 3D‐animated and manipulated in Maya to qualitatively compare modeled kinematic parameters. Results show that the merus and carpus in swimming crabs are shorter than in non‐swimming crabs, while sROM angles are generally larger. The tROM of all joints expressed as Euclidean distances is generally higher in the portunoids (except for Carcinus). Our comparison of the complete trajectory of the dactylus tip regarding all maximum joint positions of the studied species suggests that the P5‐swimming leg might have evolved once in the Portunoidea and got lost afterward in certain clades.
Combining multiple three‐dimensional modeling methods like Amira and Maya, we were able to reconstruct surface leg models of swimming crabs and relatives, to measure orientation and position of joint axes as well as excursion angles inside the joints and to overall create flexible joints with movable podomeres.
Amblypygi are tropical and subtropical ambush predators that use elongated, raptorial pedipalps for different activities. Although pedipalp use in predation and courtship has been explored in ...videography in vivo analyses, kinematic ex vivo examination of these appendages has not been conducted. Here, we rectify this lack of data by using micro‐CT scans to 3D‐kinematically model the appendage morphology and the range of motion (ROM) of the joints for Damon medius and Heterophrynus elaphus. We illustrate the successful application of this technique to terrestrial euarthropods in determining the maximum ROM values for each pedipalp joint. We also note that, in life, these values would be lower due to motion restricting structures like tendons, arthrodial membranes, and muscles. We further compare our maximum values obtained here with data from video‐based motion analyses. The ROM of each joint shows the greatest flexibility in the femur‐tibia joint (140–150°), the lowest in the basitarsus‐claw joint (35–40°). ROM in the tibia‐basitarsus joint is markedly distinct (D. medius: 44°; H. elaphus: 105°). This disparity reflects how H. elaphus uses the joint in the capture basket, while D. medius uses the femur‐tibia joint to form the capture basket. We further illustrate notable vertical motion of the H. elaphus pedipalp compared to D. medius. This difference reflects the retro‐ventral trochanter apophysis of H. elaphus. Our study opens the possibility to further whip spider kinematic understanding. Examination of other taxa using this approach will result in a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological significance and ethological implications of this unique arachnid group.
Pedipalp kinematics in 2 whip spider species were examined, excursion angle data collected, and the ecological significance is considered.
The process of rendering a 3D animation often takes a very long time to complete. In situations where it would take several hours or even many days, it is inconvenient to spend that time near the ...rendering computer in order to control and oversee the process. Through the work with 3D computer graphic technologies, the authors realized that there is no simple solution on the market that facilitates the monitoring of the remote computer that is running the rendering process. This paper deals with developing a system to enable those tasks to be done from a remote computer or any mobile device. The developed proof-of-concept system consists of two Python programs communicating over the Dropbox service and a computer that is running the Autodesk Maya software.
Automation lies at the centre of many debates surrounding computer-generated animation. Rarely used as a neutral term, it is frequently a marker of changing practices somehow outside the control of ...human users of technologies, often threatening the terms on which agency is founded. This understanding of automation and computer animation software can be complicated by insights from software studies. Accordingly, 3D animation software Autodesk Maya is explored through a methodology that places an analysis of the visual organization of the user interface alongside interviews with users of the software, in particular modellers and animators. Discussion of the interview material is framed through Noah Wardrip-Fruin’s ideas on expressive processing and Adrian Mackenzie’s account of software and agency. The argument put forward is that users experience the automation of software via their interactions with the user interface, and that inputs generated through human users and automation counterpoint rather eclipse each other.
The paper presents a prototype of collision avoidance aircraft system and to design the horizontal and vertical movements of a pair of such aircraft. The proposed techniques deal with optimization ...shape, and size of the aircraft and its various parts. The movement of the pair of such aircraft with optimized geometrical shapes has been animated through the application of Autodesk Maya software. The entire aerial behavior commencing from the ground movement of aircraft along the runway, takeoff, and aerial flying, horizontal and vertical movement, turning and landing and safety landing have been animated by using the said optimized structure. An approximation ratio of the aircraft length and its wings dimension (tip to tip), to maintain the safe distance between two aircraft (with respect to horizontal and vertical direction) has been predicted in the present study.

We analyse the glass rhombicuboctahedron (RCO) appearing in a famous painting of Pacioli (1495), considering the extent to which it might agree with a physically correct rendering of a corresponding ...glass container half filled with water. This investigation shows that it is unlikely that the painter of the RCO was looking at such a physical object. We then ask what a proper rendering of such an object might look like. Our computer renderings, which take into account multiple internal and external reflections and refractions, yield visual effects that differ strongly from their depictions in the painting. Nevertheless, the painter of the RCO has clearly succeeded in providing a rendering that appears plausible and awe-inspiring to almost all observers.
Virtual crop models and animation make great significances to agricultural researches. But to recreate the structure and dynamic is often a hard and laborious task. Most existing plant-modeling ...systems require the user to have specific biological knowledge about plants, but its often the 3D artists who do the work. This paper discusses a method of plant modeling and rigging in Maya, which has already been familiar to 3D artists and has advantages in industrial production pipelines. The method takes pepper plant for example, dividing the problem into organs and the growth patterns, and using Maya modeling and animating system to simulate the topological structure and growth dynamic. It set up the geometry with controls which are easy to use. The result can be conveniently exported to projects. This approach helps prepare the research of variety plant modeling and animation plug-in for Maya.

How might we synthesise two very different approaches in architecture? One based on programme and another on typology or paradigm. Pablo Miranda Carranza, a researcher at the Architecture School at ...the RoyalInstitute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, takes his cue from an approach suggested by Colin Rowe in the early 1980s to examine how computation formulates architectural thinking and presentation.
