As Charles Babbage worked at home on the design of his "analytical engine" he was plagued by the many street entertainers, including brass bands and organ grinders, who were a common sight and sound ...in the streets of Victorian London. The aggravation was such as to lobby Parliament to bring in stricter legislation for regulating these nuisances. Many thought Babbage to be a killjoy but after he died, a post-mortem revealed that the large arteries of the brain were extremely diseased. Restricted blood flow to the head probably led to the loss of the tiny hair cells lining the inner ear. The death of these cells, which turn sound vibrations into nerve impulses, causes deafness, starting with the loss of the quietest sounds. Some people with this type of deafness suffer from a phenomenon whereby their perception of sound is altered so that loud sounds seem much louder than they would to someone with perfect hearing. Lady Ada Augusta Lovelace, the only legitimate offspring of Lord Byron, was the confidante of Charles Babbage, the Cambridge professor who spent his life developing a mechanical computer known as the ...Analytical Machine. She is credited with being the world's first computer programmer; her pioneering work on the basics of programming dates to as early as 1846.

In the early 19th century, Charles Babbage decided not to patent his dozen or so inventions, instead making them immediately available for others to copy and develop. Contemporary innovators would ...either regard Babbage as a fool or as a forward-thinking philosopher. He probably would have decided that it was impossible to stop the copying of software and, as some contemporary software houses do, have given it away with books that one had to purchase to enable one to use it effectively. Nor would Babbage have made software so user friendly.
