In Women Writers and National Identity, Stephanie Bird offers a detailed analysis of the twin themes of female identity and national identity in the works of three major twentieth-century ...German-language women writers. Bird argues for the importance of an understanding of ambiguity, tension and contradiction in the fictional narratives of Ingeborg Bachmann, Anne Duden and Emine Özdamar. She aims to demonstrate how ambiguity is itself central to the development of an understanding of identity and that literary texts are uniquely able to point to the ethical importance of ambiguity through their stylistic complexity. Bird gives close readings of the three writers and draws on feminist theory and psychoanalysis to elucidate the complex nature of individual identity. This book will be of interest to literary and women's studies scholars as well as Germanists.

This article explores the handling of time and care in two works by Ingeborg Bachmann: the short story ‘Das Gebell’ and the uncompleted novel Das Buch Franza. It argues that care and time are linked ...in the works, in a manner that echoes the thinking of Lisa Baraitser (Enduring Time). ‘Das Gebell’ offers a critique of masculinist models of time and puts forward a feminist ethics of care. Das Buch Franza points up the difficulty and ambivalence involved in care, as it traces the complex dynamic between a brother and a sister. Both texts explore the fascism that lurks beneath heterosexual relationships, in line with Karen R. Achberger's view that one theme runs throughout Bachmann's works: ‘the constant state of war’. This war is gendered in complex ways. Through her works, Bachmann complicates and enhances theories of submission and domination such as that developed by Jessica Benjamin (The Bonds of Love), the texts themselves forming sites of protest and transformation.

Dieser Artikel untersucht den Umgang mit Zeit und Pflege in zwei Werken von Ingeborg Bachmann: in der Kurzgeschichte ‘Das Gebell’ und im Romanfragment Das Buch Franza. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass Pflege und Zeit in diesen Werken miteinander verbunden sind, in einer Art und Weise, die an Konzepte Lisa Baraitsers (Enduring Time) erinnert. ‘Das Gebell’ bietet eine Kritik männlicher Zeitmodelle und schlägt eine feministische Pflegeethik vor. Das Buch Franza verweist auf die Herausforderungen und Ambivalenzen beim Pflegen, dargestellt anhand der komplexen Dynamik zwischen einem Bruder und einer Schwester. Beide Texte untersuchen Alltagsfaschismen, die in heterosexuellen Beziehungen lauern. Dies entspricht der Sichtweise Karen R. Achbergers, insofern, dass ein Motiv in Bachmanns Werken durchgehend präsent ist: das des ‘permanenten Kriegszustandes’. Dieser Krieg spielt sich mit komplexen Geschlechterzuschreibungen ab. In ihren Werken verkompliziert und erweitert Bachmann Theorien von Unterwerfung und Kontrolle – wie jene entwickelt von Jessica Benjamin (The Bonds of Love); die Texte selbst werden zu Manifestationen von Protest und Wandlung.

The present commentary provides an introduction to the complex aesthetics of the text, taking into consideration its background in time, culture, and historical attitudes, along with its system of intertextual allusions. The commentary provides readers and scholars of Bachmann with a compendium of different interpretations of her work, and should stimulate them to seek new ways of understanding it.
This article discusses the relationship between two seminal figures of the 1960s Italian experimental art scene: composer Luigi Nono and neo-avant-garde poet Nanni Balestrini. In particular, it ...focuses on their collaboration, in 1968, on Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (Dialectical Counterpoint for the Mind), a composition for two-channel magnetic tape based on Adriano Banchieri's 1608 madrigal Contrappunto bestiale alla mente (Bestial Counterpoint for the Mind). On the one hand, this essay provides a contextual analysis of Balestrini's four original poetic texts, which Nono elaborated electronically at the RAI's Studio di Fonologia in Milan. On the other, it demonstrates how the compositional technique used by Nono for Contrappunto dialettico alla mente inspired the later creation of Balestrini's eponymous poem published in 1969. Finally, this article argues for a novel reading of Balestrini's poem as the linguistic attempt at transposing to writing Nono's electronic montage and sound manipulation of the human voice.
