In this ground-breaking work on the Ottoman town of Manastir (Bitola), Robert Mihajlovski, provides a detailed account of the development of Islamic, Christian and Sephardic religious architecture ...and culture as it manifested in the town and precincts.
The results of the systematic study of the spatial distribution of trace metals in surface soil over the Bitola region, Republic of Macedonia, known for its coal mine and thermo-electrical power ...plant activities are reported. The investigated region (3200 km
2
) is covered by a sparse sampling grid of 5 × 5 km, but in the urban zone and around the thermoelectric power plant the sampling grid is denser (1 × 1 km). In total, 229 soil samples from 149 locations were collected including top-soil (0-5 cm) and bottom-soil samples (20-30 cm and 0-30 cm). Inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was applied for the determinations of 21 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, V and Zn). Based on the results of factor analyses, three geogenic associations of elements have been defined: F1 (Fe, Ni, V, Co, Cr, Mn and Li), F2 (Zn, B, Cu, Cd, Na and K) and F3 (Ca, Sr, Mg, Ba and Al). Even typical trace metals such as As, Cd, Cu, Ni, P, Pb and Zn are not isolated into anthropogenic geochemical associations by multivariate statistical methods still show some trends of local anthropogenic enrichment. The distribution maps for each analyzed element is showing the higher content of these elements in soil samples collected around the thermoelectric power plants than their average content for the soil samples collected from the whole Bitola Region. It was found that this enrichment is a result of the pollution by fly ash from coal burning which deposited near the plant having a high content of these elements.
A multidirectional relationship has been demonstrated between myocardial infarction (MI) and depression. However, the causal genetic factors and molecular mechanisms underlying this interaction ...remain unclear. The main purpose of this study was to identify potential candidate genes for the interaction between the two diseases.
Using a bioinformatics approach and existing gene expression data in the biomedical discovery support system (BITOLA), we defined the starting concept X as "Myocardial Infarction" and end concept Z as "Major Depressive Disorder" or "Depressive disorder". All intermediate concepts relevant to the "Gene or Gene Product" for MI and depression were searched. Gene expression data and tissue-specific expression of potential candidate genes were evaluated using the Human eFP (electronic Fluorescent Pictograph) Browser, and intermediate concepts were filtered by manual inspection.
Our analysis identified 128 genes common to both the "MI" and "depression" text mining concepts. Twenty-three of the 128 genes were selected as intermediates for this study, 9 of which passed the manual filtering step. Among the 9 genes, LCAT, CD4, SERPINA1, IL6, and PPBP failed to pass the follow-up filter in the Human eFP Browser, due to their low levels in the heart tissue. Finally, four genes (GNB3, CNR1, MTHFR, and NCAM1) remained.
GNB3, CNR1, MTHFR, and NCAM1 are putative new candidate genes that may influence the interactions between MI and depression, and may represent potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
The two German memorials in Tobruk, Libya (1954-1955) and in El Alamein, Egypt (1956-1959) were deliberately built close to sites of decisive Second World War battles. At both memorials, ...commemoration is cultivated in a predominantly de-individualized manner, and the historical-political meaningfulness as well as the fort-like, hermetical design of the structures directly reference concepts of commemoration prevalent during the Third Reich. Analogous to these concepts, the memorials refer back to the Hohenstaufen castles and forts in southern Italy and Sicily, and, thus, to the Holy Roman Empire's most persistent period of territorial expansion. Robert Tischler, the architect responsible for both of the German War Graves Commission's monuments in North Africa, had already constructed similar memorials during the National Socialist period. He was able to carry such projects over to the post-war period without further scrutiny. This illustrates once again the oppressive personnel and mental consistencies which continued beyond 1945.
The purpose of this paper aims for collection, transport and depositing of the communal waste in the Municipality of Bitola. The justification of another systematic approach toward the communal waste ...in the Municipality of Bitola is also represented.
There are many benefits of the implementation of this kind of sustainable logistic model system for collection of the communal waste in the Municipality of Bitola. It was summarized that the benefits that would be obtained lead to improvement of the living conditions, and with that the implementation of this model would be justified completely
Colonel Stefan Iliev, a commander of the 15th Infantry Lom regiment (Belogradchik), is a Bulgarian hero, killed in the battlefield at Chervenata stena, near Bitola, on 26 March 1917. Here is the ...journal version of a very rare book, published in the printing house of Stamen Kamenov in Belogradchik in 1930. On the cover of the book an author is not given - it is an edition of the Belogradchik Society of the Reserve Non-Commissioned Officers. All details of the military career of this brave Bulgarian soldier are described. The book exists in two editions.
Drawing on an idiosyncratic case, the re-building of an Orthodox church in the Ottoman town of Bitola in 1830, I revisit one of the black-and-white schemes of the Balkan national historiographies ...relative to the Ottoman rule, namely the lack of religious freedom. In Bitola, the erection of the new church was made possible thanks to the substantial sponsorship by the highest Ottoman dignitary, the Grand Vizier. The local oral tradition "translated" the historical fact into a legend according to which "the pasha" had seen the patron saint of the church in a dream. The church was (re)built in a particular context, which is reconstituted in the paper. My conclusion is that after the complicated circumstances were forgotten, an element of divine intervention was introduced to make sense of the unusual help of a Grand Vizier for the building of a church.
