In Borges' Classics, Laura Jansen reads the oeuvre of the Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges as a radically globalized model for reimagining our relationship with the classical past. This major study ...reveals how Borges constructs a new 'physics of reading' the classics, which privileges a paradoxical vision of the canon as universal yet centreless, and eschews fixed ideas about the cultural history of the West. Borges' unique approach transforms classical antiquity into a simultaneously familiar and remote world, whose legacy is both urgent and unstable. In the process, Borges repositions the classical tradition at the intersection of the traditional Western canon and modernist literature of the peripheral West. Jansen's study traces Borges' encounters with the classics through appeal to themes central to Borges' thought, such as history and fiction, memory and forgetfulness, the data of the senses, and the vectors that connect cultures and countries.

This book argues that the quest for God, though largely unheeded by the critical canon, was a major and enduring preoccupation for Borges. This is shown through careful analysis both of his essays, ...with their emphasis on his philosophical-theological explorations, and of the narrative articulations which are his stories. It is in the poetry of his middle and closing years, however, that Borges' search is most manifest, as it is no longer obscured. Spanning different periods of his life, and different literary genres, Borges' work attests to a maturing and evolving quest. Pero Campra se decanta más bien por esa presencia enigmática del fantasma en tanto "funcionamiento silencioso de la Compañía" (p. 68, el énfasis es de la autora), a propósito del relato de Borges "La ...lotería en Babilonia", en cuyo origen Campra está siguiendo al propio Cortázar cuando explicita explicaciones terapéuticas o catárticas frente al miedo o las fobias que los fantasmas hacen emerger: "se generan en ciertos pavores ante lo inexplicable o inidentificable" (p. 74) y, recurriendo al clásico "Axolotl", pone el énfasis en la experiencia de lenguaje y el acto de narración al cual nos confronta al narrador y, por consiguiente, también al lector "en su permanente capacidad de perturbar nuestras certidumbres" (p. 75). Experiencia imposible de compartir, por lo menos hasta nuestros días" (p. 126); Campra advierte con gran pertinencia, para que su posible comunicación y narración sean durante la vigilia y el territorio de los sueños sea inaccesible hasta para el soñante, que solamente cuando ha despertado puede constatar el término de su estadio anterior. La extensión de esta reseña-comentario no me permite esbozar sus argumentos con prolijidad, solamente apuntar que depende, para Campra, del punto de vista y de la "telaraña" (p. 173) de hilos narrativos, de pistas y certitudes, para que, utilizando de nuevo la metáfora textil, insista en el "encaje" (p. 176) que el texto hace montar para hacer funcionar el desfase entre la experiencia onírica y su narración.

Para ello, la autora plantea los pequeños detalles que dibujan la forma y el fondo de una institución social, ética y moral con el potencial suficiente como para condicionar el desarrollo vital de ...sus integrantes, que compondrán una familia muy particular donde nada será lo que parece. Una conducta inflexible y obligada a continuar los estereotipos más retrógrados es lo que moldea el control parental que aniquila la creatividad de personajes como Aquilino (al cual su padre castiga por sus cómicas caricaturas). La autora perfila una obra con un lector implícito que conozca la psicología humana tanto como para percibir la caricatura del antihéroe de la narración, un personaje que queda retratado con tonos bufonescos y que acaba siendo víctima de sus propias trampas.
Este artículo compara las diferentes nociones de "felicidad" que Gilbert Keith Chesterton y Jorge Luis Borges manejan en sus respectivas obras. Sin duda, la noción chestertoniana de felicidad está ...marcada por su catolicismo militante, de corte trascendente, mientras que la de Borges responde a un esquema secular, de corte inmanente. Pero, como bien sabía Borges, los lectores no sólo completan, sino que reescriben, las obras. Por eso, Borges decidió reescribir la obra de Chesterton, rebajando el componente religioso, para alimentar su propia soteriología laica, que es uno de los centros fundamentales de toda su obra.
Focusing on work by Jorge Luis Borges, Samuel Beckett and J.M. Coetzee, Literary Cynics explores the relationship between literature and cynicism to consider what happens when authors write ...themselves into their art, against the rhetoric of authority. Rose takes as his starting point three moments of aesthetic crisis in the careers of these literary cynics: Borges's parables of the 1950s, Beckett's plays of the 1980s, and Coetzee's pedagogic novels of the 2000s. In their transition to 'late style', the works reflect their writers' abiding concern with particular conceptions of rhetoric and aesthetic form.
