A review essay on the music of Glebe singer-songwriter John Dengate, whose work was highlighted at the 2004 National Folk Festival in Canberra, calls attention to the vital role folk music plays in ...the culture wars currently being waged in Australian politics. Dengate, who is widely known as a busker on prominent city corners, was billed at the festival as a "living treasure." His concert in the lower house chamber at Old Parliament House consisted of satirical songs described as "forty years of political dissent." It is maintained that satire provides a few laughs; goes beyond the usual compromised debates between Governments & Oppositions; & encourages people not to take themselves so seriously. Excerpts from Dengate's songs are included to show that their success rests on the wit of the words. Dengate is dedicated to the preservation of Australia's cultural heritage & his songs illustrate in a humorous way what it means to be Australian at this point in history. J. Lindroth
