The aim of this article is to examine how poetry, in the case of Paul Celan, created its own language after the Shoah. The thesis is that Paul Celan intentionally uses religious language to expose ...the object, but at the same time he desacralises it. This shift is revolutionary. In the main part of this article I analyse an exemplum of the use of language which is given in the poem, 'In the rivers'. This analysis is meant to show the mechanisms for creating a proper language. The conclusion is that Celan's poetry is founded upon the figure of a witness. This desacralised figure is poetic and ethical (but not substantial). What is more, the way this poetry is written puts it into the position of a witness as well as that of the reader. This is a social fact, so the point of view of the author traverses the sociology of both religion and that of literature.

Autre remarque d'ordre général concernant ce volume s'impose ici : dans la bonne tradition de Gaston Bachelard et de ses successeurs, représentants de la critique thématique, l'auteure analyse souvent par themes et motifs l'imaginaire que les textes véhiculent. En lisant ses textes, on a l'impression qu'elle a devant soi les cartes completes et détaillées des œuvres qu'elle compare, cartes sur lesquelles elle peut absolument tout voir, tout détecter, pénétrant avec son regard jusqu'aux recoins ou plis les plus cachés des œuvres et enregistrer ainsi, a volonté, toutes les occurrences d'un mot ou d'une expression, toutes les images qui entrent en résonance les unes avec les autres, bref, toute réverbération et tout contraste significatifs qui se produisent lorsque des œuvres dfférentes sont mises face a face. Bien qu'il soit impossible de dire ici l'enchaînement rigoureux selon lequel est construite chaque étude, sa logique (divisées en étapes ou parties distinctes ayant chacune un titre, ce sont le plus souvent de véritables démonstrations, mais ou, pour parler comme Pascal, l'esprit de géométrie est harmonieusement accompagné par l'esprit de finesse), présentons brievement dans les lignes qui suivent ces chapitres, afin d'offrir au futur lecteur plus d'information. C'est aussi, dans sa premiere partie, une breve introduction a l'œuvre de Fondane : une sorte de vade-mecum mis avec beaucoup de profit, en ce début du livre, a la disposition du lecteur - soit, si celui-ci est « nouveau en la matiere », pour le familiariser avec cette œuvre et lui donner les bases nécessaires a la comprehension ultérieure, soit, s'il s'agit d'un lecteur avisé, lui rappeler l'architecture de l'ensemble, mais en en nuançant de façon personnelle les éléments les plus importants.

The fact that the poet from Chernivtsi, Immanuel Weissglas, reworked, revised and resumed many of his poems in later volumes became an object of study relatively late, also due to his placement in ...the "shadow" of Paul Celan. His three volumes, Kariera am Bug, the unpublished volume Gottes Mühlen in Berlin and Nobiskrug, however, contain multiple examples of these variations of the original works, the poems being modified, quoted or changed to different degrees. A valuable starting point for studies on this topic is represented by Barbara Wiedemanns list of these equivalents and their type. This article aims to analyze the similarities and overlaps between the first and last volume of Weissglas, while trying to capture the character of these two volumes, possible motivations of Weissglas to maintain his work in a continuous process of transformation, and finding an answer to the question: What has the poem become in its new form?
In this article I contend that Paul Celan’s poem, “Todtnauberg,” written as a follow up to his visit to Martin Heidegger’s
, should be read not only as a challenge to Heideggerian philosophy’s ...fundamental assumptions – primarily the notion of dwelling in the world via poetic language – but also to the very structure of philosophical thought, with its biases and inadequacies. Drawing on Celan’s idiosyncratic use of the term
I show its centrality in understanding the poem’s deconstructive move, as it applied to the binaries inherent to Heideggerian thought: pure/impure, indigenous/foreign, rooted/uprooted, and authentic/inauthentic. Posing the deconstructive qualities of the poetic against the crude decisiveness of philosophical thought, I argue that “Todtnauberg” ‘catches’ Heideggerian thought unprepared, as it presents it with its own blind spots, misconceptions, and loose ends, and thus rattles the very ground in which it seeks to ground itself.
While Paul Celan's lyrical commemoration of the Holocaust has been recognized for its multidirectionality, commentators have not acknowledged his engagement with other colonial and imperial histories ...contemporaneous with his writing. Celan's advocacy for reading words "with the acute accent of the present" calls for a reading of his poetry that is attentive to its evocations of, and silence around, multiple histories of racial violence. Recognizing how the longue durée of transatlantic slavery is mediated through oceanic archives and the element of water, this article reads the fraught nearshore landscapes in Sprachgitter for their commemoration of the unresolved unfolding of Auschwitz and, if inadvertently, the unresolved unfolding of the Middle Passage. The reading focuses on "Niedrigwasser," a poem ostensibly about a coastal landscape that is also about the formation and deformation of that landscape through ecological processes that used materials transported by genocidal violence. The multiple temporalities of the poem move between human time and geologic time in order to grasp the legacy of Auschwitz. In unsettling attempts to contain the spatial and temporal scale of genocide, this and other poems evidence their receptivity to and implicatedness in distant, but not entirely unrelated, histories of violence.
This article offers a comparative reading of two 20th century poems, each preoccupied with Jewish catastrophe: Ḥayyim Naḥman Bialik's "Beʿir haharegah" ("In the City of Slaughter"), and "Engführung" ...("The Straitening"), written by poet and Holocaust survivor Paul Celan. Drawing on some of the recent developments in affect theory, the article asserts that these two modern accounts of Jewish ḥurban share a fundamental characteristic that speaks to the mechanism of poetic reenactment: an experiential reconstruction of the walk to and within the sites of destruction, which turns the readers of the poems into active participants in this experience. Such performative reading, which exceeds the rigid confines of mere representation, pushes constantly toward active and visceral interaction between reader and text, in the course of which questions of memory, belonging, and collective and subjective identity, are raised and reexamined. The artistic experience of destruction thus acquires constructive power, as literature becomes an active agent of memory, freeing the historical event from its rigid facticity and transforming it into an ongoing occurrence, taking place here and now, over and over again.
