Ban Nikola Zrinski, also known as ban Zrinović or ban Zrinjanin, is a common character in traditional Croatian oral poetry and popular historic songs. The paper analyses stylistic patterns and ...narrative forms typical for different types of songs about this hero from different historical periods. Oral songs about this popular hero were recorded and collected from the second part of the 16th century until the early 20th century, simultaneously with the literary texts of educated authors. Examples of recorded oral songs about Ban Zrinović were metrically composed in different types of traditional verses such as dodecasyllable verse, long bugarštica verses of mostly fifteen and sixteen syllables with a caesura after the seventh and eighth syllable, octosyllable verse and from the 19th century, the most common was decasyllable verse. The popular historic song by Andrija Kačić Miošić entitled Song About Ban Zrinović and Emperor Suleman III describes the Siege of Szigetvár and connects historically founded facts and traditional decasyllabic stylisation. Songs featuring this traditional hero can cultivate historical themes and motifs, as well as scenes from everyday life of traditional communities, love themes and ceremonial situations. Folk singers also sang numerous stories about this beloved hero presenting his everyday life in ballads, romances, and lyrical songs.
The paper deals with the computer-aided analysis of characters in the following texts of Croatian literature: Šuma Striborova (Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić), Oprava (Josip Kozarac), Krvavi most u Zagrebu ...(Mirko Bogović), Oko Lobora (Antun Gustav Matoš), Posljednji Stipančići (Vjenceslav Novak). In the theoretical part, digital humanities and its subfield digital philology are defined. Basic terms from the fields of natural language processing and narratology are explained, since they are the theoretical and practical basis of the research. The rest of the paper is research conducted on the texts above in the internet program called Sketch Engine. The research question is stated as follows: whether it is possible to obtain data that is useful for the interpretation of literary characters through computer-assisted analysis, based on narratology and the existing literary-theoretical elements of characterization. Based on the results, the affirmative answer is given to the formulated research question, and the potential and challenges of digital humanities are highlighted.
This book offers a new edition with a transliteration and a detailed analysis of the linguistic peculiarities of a little-known in science and hitherto unexplored Medieval Croatian manuscript. This ...is the vita of St. Catherine “Legenda sv. Katarine divice” according to manuscript I c 6 from the Archives of HAZU. The text was created for the nuns from the Franciscan monastery “St. Ekaterina” in Zadar, was kept in the virgin Benedictine monastery “St. Maria” in Zadar, later became part of the rich book collection of Ivan Kukuljevic, and since 1869 it has been among the manuscripts of the library of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It was written in the vernacular from the region of Central and Northern Dalmatia from the period XIV-XV centuries. The writing, spelling, morphology, vocabulary of the selected manuscript are described and analyzed in detail. A special emphasis in the study is placed on the style of Croatian vita. Stylistic analysis overlaps each of the linguistic levels listed above. A supposed Latin prothograph, on which the Croatian translation was probably made, has also been recovered. The results of the textual analysis show that the style of the Croatian vita is unique, rarely influenced by the Latin text and is a testimony rather to the skills and experience of the translator/compiler in the translation/compilation activity.
In this paper authors analyze the poems, together with several short notes, which are found in the subsequently added choral part of the Glagolitic Beram codex, presently known as the First Beram Breviary from the fourteenth century. The basic content of this breviary is the sanctorale cycle. The poetry section of the codex in this work for the first time is named Songbook of Beram. This section consists of several collections of poems, among which someone subsequently added other liturgical and patristic texts. The analysis of these previously uninvestigated poems has showed that among them, besides previously known and investigated pomes such as U vse vrime godišća At this time of year and Sudac gnjevan Die Ires, one can find unique Glagolitic texts such as Milost Duha Svetago Holy Spirit’s Mercy and Pohvaļujmo današńi dan Praise Today. The sequence of subsequently added texts indicates that they are all thematically and functionally connected, and therefore this songbook contributes to knowledge about the use (reading, listening and memorization) of the text that came to the Glagolitic community from various places and sources. In conclusion, the authors have shown that this Songbook of Beram should be considered as very important not only in the corpus of Glagolitic poetry but also as a significant part of Croatian medieval poetry.
This paper presents the most important information about the mysterious Zagreb phase of Irina Aleksander-Kunjina’s biography, her role in Croatian interwar literature, and her relations with vital ...figures of the Croatian literary scene of that time. An overview of her literary contributions in Croatian literary journals will also be presented. Apart from the evaluation of her role in the interwar literary scene, the aim of this paper is to shed light on her writing in Croatian and the reception of her activity and works in Croatian literary milieu. Although she did receive attention among the literary public, this was more due to her public persona than her literary work.
