Este artículo analiza cuatro obras de Fatou Diome (La préférence nationale, 2001; Le ventre de l'Atlantique, 2005; Impossible de grandir, 2013; Marianne porte plainte!, 2017) que apuntan ...temáticamente al exilio de la narradora Salie, doble de la autora. El objetivo es ordenar un material textual abundante gracias a conceptos literarios, sociológicos y antropológicos, sin olvidar la parte excedente de la literatura, que indica el camino. La hipótesis consistirá en desvelar las virtudes didácticas del panfleto (2017), a diferencia de las narraciones de ficción poco performativas. Metodológicamente, el análisis irá desde las constelaciones del cosmopolitismo a una educación alternacionalista, pasando por las figuras del extranjero y de la hospitalidad, y por la cuestión identitaria.
En Le ventre de l'Atlantique (2003), Celles qui attendent (2010) y Impossible degrandir (2013), Fatou Diome presenta una "egogeografía" literaria vinculada a la identidad y los paisajes del Delta del ...Saloum. El vínculo femenino con el paisaje se convierte en el eje central de este estudio, al tiempo que se analizan las representaciones simbólicas y lingüísticas que generan paradigmas de sentido en función de la posición que la sustancia salada ocupa en la convergencia entre naturaleza, cultura, espacio y memoria. Si, para Michel Collot (2014), la geografía literaria es la expresión de una relación concreta, afectiva y simbólica que une, según esta investigación, a la mujer con el paisaje, la geocrítica nos permitirá arrojar luz sobre el topos salado en el imaginario femenino senegalés.
Fatou Diome's writing constantly enriches and renews Francophone African literary production, especially in the realms of characterization, intertextuality, and transnationalism. Indeed, her work ...delineates the body and space in ways that expand the limits of this literary field further, thus making it more inclusive of our most intimate objects as characters along with nonAfrican intertextual references. Her novel Ketala produces a creative form of narration that brings multiple voices and existential sensibilities in an effort to challenge any homogeneous conceptions and representations of identity, whether human or textual. This paper examines Diome's enriching renewal of literary creativity through biocentrism as magic realism and through a hybrid transculturation that transcends continental borders. It argues that Diome carries out this innovative renewal by constructing a fantastic process of memorialization built around Ketala's main female protagonist, Memoria, and her lifelike experiences in national and transnational spaces, as well as her untimely death.
Though still arguably marginal in the notoriously centralized French language literary landscape, texts produced by Afropean authors, meaning authors of sub-Saharan origin born or currently residing ...in Europe, now constitute a corpus of their own with well-known authors, including Alain Mabanckou, Leonora Miano, Abdourahman Waberi, and Fatou Diome, gaining in readership and reach. Central to their works is the consideration of culturally hybrid identities whose multi-belongingness across and beyond continental sub-Saharan and European spaces is depicted in an overwhelmingly positive light. This article diverges from past scholarship through its consideration of the difficult identarian compromise for the culturally hybrid protagonists in Miano's L'interieur de la nuit and Diome's Le Ventre de l'Atlantique. Close reading of these texts, and namely of the experiences of their female Afropean protagonists, suggests a more nuanced, complex, and less positive vision of contemporary Afropeanity than that lauded by theorists concerning a celebrated, emancipatory, and overwhelmingly coveted condition of postmodernity.
Este trabajo examina con más amplitud algunos referentes femeninos de la literatura senegalesa poscolonial para constatar cómo la influencia de estos ha trascendido a la realidad contemporánea de ...Senegal. Para ello, anclamos los antecedentes de este presente senegalés, en el que la mujer se desenvuelve cada vez más con mayor estímulo y eficacia. Estos precedentes constituyen una sólida estructura de estereotipos de ficción literaria que han producido modelos reales, observándose un acertado empoderamiento femenino. La temática pretende ahondar en la pertinencia de las líneas isotópicas literarias desarrolladas en La aventura ambigua (1961) de Cheikh Hamidou Kane, en Mi carta más larga (1979) de Mariama Bâ, en La huelga de los mendigos (1979) de Aminata Sow Fall y En un lugar del Atlántico (2003) de Fatou Diome, un corpus que ilustra un trasfondo social perteneciente a un topos, no solo senegalés sino también europeo. Estos referentes femeninos son modelos isotópicos que evocan reiteradamente los conflictos sociales transversales en muchas sociedades africanas y europeas, tales como la rebeldía, la poligamia, el viaje y la mendicidad.

La investigación, que se centra ...en obras como La fabrique de ceremonies de Kossi Efoui; Les petits-fils negres de Vercingétorix de Alain Mabanckou y Le ventre de l'Atlantique de Fatou Diome, permite mostrar desde un enfoque sociocrítico cómo han evolucionado los niveles de representación de la diversidad cultural en los autores de la migritud, a diferencia de las obras publicadas por autores africanos de la negritud.
This article focuses on the representation of sporting practices in the works of Roland Barthes, Roch Carrier, and Fatou Diome in order to illustrate how Glissant’s notion of Relation – and its ...concomitant principles of opacity, rhizome identity, and le Même and le Divers – shed new light on the modes of interaction entailed in global sports cultures. I explore the relevance of these concepts to an analysis of sports before turning to their applicability to specific literary texts in French. Although the mise en relation of individuals, peoples, and cultures through sport is generally presented as a positive in Barthes and Carrier, Diome’s novel underscores the illusionary nature of the sense of community created, including the perpetuation of exploitative societal structures.
Fatou Diome’s first novel, Le Ventre de l’Atlantique (2003), can be read as a work of migrant literature in which the Atlantic figures as a separating expanse beholden to a single past, that of the ...Atlantic Slave Trade. The ocean divides contemporary African migrants to Europe from the continent, as it did enslaved Africans taken forcibly to the Americas; it consumes a returned impoverished migrant, as it swallowed those who did not survive the Middle Passage. Yet for the authorial protagonist, Salie, and her island home, the Senegalese fishing village of Niodior, the Atlantic evokes multiple histories and experiences. This ocean is a place of freedom, as well as its absence; of daily sustenance, as well as migration; of life, as well as death; of postcolonial violence, as well as the violence of the Trade. The novel’s Atlantic, like the text as a whole, alludes to many pasts and, at times, abandons the dualities of place, race, and gender that organize most contemporary discourse about migration and oppression. Passages of opaque desire and oblique critique diverge from a dichotomous geography of continents and subject positions. Where Salie and Niodior emerge uncontained by categories inherited from colonial discourses, there are intimations of what genuinely postcolonial freedom might be.
This article broadens the discussion of translingual writing by exploring how it functions in a specific postcolonial context. Senegal remains a stronghold of Francophone literature, but African ...languages permeate this writing. Most recently, under more deregulated language and publishing policies, writers have published both in Wolof and in French. Following a discussion of this historical context, this article focuses on the translingual practice of contemporary writer Fatou Diome. It explores how this author uses her platform as a popular writer in France to incorporate other languages into her later work but problematizes the linguistic philosophies of her predecessors.
While the male-dominated Francophone African migrant literary tradition includes women writers, there is no study that attends to this subgroup of writers. The Pull of Postcolonial Nationhood: Gender ...and Migration in Francophone African Literatures pioneers the study of these writers as a category through an examination of three major women who exemplify the Francophone African female migrant literary tradition: Ken Bugul, Calixthe Beyala, and Fatou Diome. By studying these women together, Ayo A. Coly innovatively introduces gender into prevailing theories of Francophone African migrant literatures. These theories, in line with the current surge of postnationalism in cultural criticism, claim that questions of home and nationhood are obsolete for the present generation of Francophone African migrant writers, but this book shows that the opposite is true in the texts of these writers. Coly is thus able to demonstrate how claims of postnationalism are often skewed by gender-blind understandings of nationalism, namely a failure to consider that women have traditionally been the sites for discourses and practices of nationalism. Amid the negative currency of home and nation in contemporary cultural criticism, including postcolonial criticism, this book contends that home remains a politically, ideologically, and emotionally loaded matter for postcolonial subjects.
