For routine communication, care providers still mainly rely on paper documents and paper mail. Evidence exists, however, that this communication can be improved, both by a better content of ...information exchange and by a more timely deliverance of this information. At present, several alternatives to paper-based communication are available, such as the Fax, the Smart Card, electronic mail, and electronic data interchange. This paper describes existing communication problems, and examines the current state of development and research aimed at improving this communication using electronic communication techniques that are gradually replacing paper-based communication. Applicability and shortcomings of these new techniques are also discussed.

Strict Conformance Testing (SCT) is a methodology for testing the conformance of a security product to standards. We summarise the methodology and report on the result of our recent work applying the ...methodology to Secure EDIFACT. We show that SCT is useful not only in evaluating products, but also in developing and validating standards.
For some time, the central library at Boehringer Mannheim, a company in the research-based pharmaceutical industry, has placed the majority of its book orders using EDIFACT. This article describes ...the situation before the introduction of the system, the technical and organisational preconditions, and the changes that were necessary to DP systems. The results are presented and the new situation of EDI versus the Internet is discussed.

The full economic benefit of EDI can only be realized with the use of EDI for the complete cycle of business transactions. Kansas State University Library, Endeavor Information Systems, and ...Harrassowitz are working in partnership to implement the full cycle of UN/EDIFACT transactions. In this workshop, speakers representing the partners in this project discussed the implementation process, including interface problems, workflow changes, critical elements, and other lessons learned in the process.

The Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation wishes to establish the necessary services needed in a national service oriented architecture. A key piece of technology in this vision is a ...hierarchy of addressing services based on registries. The ministry will register all public sector institutions with their UBL-based1 invoice services in a master registry. This guarantees a critical mass of public sector institutions and offers a good value proposition to the SME's. Not only can they send all invoices to the public sector electronically but they also have the ability to send electronic invoices to other private companies registered in the registry. The ministry believes that this solution will demonstrate the advantages of a service oriented architecture 1 and infrastructure based on registries and that this demonstration will generate the broad use of registries for other services. The proposed solution 2 consists of elements normally associated with a web service architecture. What differentiates this proposal is not the content but the approach to lowering barriers by limiting implementation choices and ensuring a critical mass of service providers.
In this contribution the role of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) for patient records is discussed. It is our opinion that unlimited access to patient records of different care provides is not a ...wise thing to do and may even not be acceptable legally. The exchange of EDI messages may be a solution in that the relevant information is exchanged on a need to know basis under the responsibility of the care provider that generated the information. The state of the art with respect to the availability of EDI messages in Europe is presented.
In this paper the results of the standardization efforts and an evaluation study concerning electronic data interchange (EDI) performed by the 31 (Inter Institutional Information exchange)-project ...are described. In an earlier paper the results of a preliminary study were reported. EDI concerns communication between autonomous information systems and therefore needs standardization of the messages to be exchanged. In the 31-project ten different types of standard messages have been defined. The use of these messages for exchanging information between hospitals, GPs and pharmacies is described. It is concluded that relatively large time savings can be obtained when communicating electronically. It is also concluded that the electronic data interchange between hospitals and GPs can be performed without additional costs. The electronic communication of prescriptions between GPs and pharmacies does raise the costs of communication at the moment. The impact of EDI on the functioning of people in the organizations involved varies widely.
