Discourse competence in a foreign language rises in importance as a learner developsand approaches higher levels of communicative language competence. Roughly defined as the ability to produce and understand texts, discourse competence is a very complex component of communicative language competence. Since the goal of learning a foreign language is not the ability to produce grammatically and semantically correct sentences, but the ability to communicate in an FL, the description of the features and the development of FL learner’s discourse competence is of utmost importance. The aim of this paper is to examine the features of introductions in argumentative essays in German texts by FL learners. The method employed is thematic progression analysis and the most important goal is to identify the shortcomings that can be observed in these texts. The corpus for the present study includes 50 texts in German written by foreign language learners at the B2 level. The analysis has revealed that poorly evaluated texts are relatively short, consisting of very few t-units and a small number of different thematic elements. The selection of referents and expressions functioning as the thematic element of a t-unit and the order in which thematic elements appear in an introduction pose great difficulties for FL learners of German. It is assumed that these shortcomings partially stem from low linguistic competence in German, but they are also associated with general cognitive abilities that are not language specific. The analysis has also revealed the scope and limitations of the application of the thematic progression analysis method. Finally, it is concluded that the results of the study can be used as a starting point to derive pedagogical implications relevant for FL learning contexts.
W świetle niektórych tez, wywodu i argumentacji zawartych w najnowszej książce Jacka Wojtysiaka Między ukryciem a jawnością.
In light of the argumentation and some of the theses introduced by Jacek Wojtysiak in his latest book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology, (2023), this article presents important components of the Christian concepts of the creative act and the God-world relationship as well as the consequences of this view for the expression of the essential elements of religious doctrine. I argue that it is impossible to create a world with (relative) autonomy and (relative) human freedom, in which there is no natural and moral evil. In this context, I emphasize not only the weight of an aspectual and rational approach to the Creator-creation relationship, but also the significance of the theory of kenosis, in which the act of creation is depicted as a kind of self-limitation of God.
The article points out the consonance between Weber's scientific work and his actual role in the social and political life of Germany. It accentuates Weber's effort to connect the general and the ...specific (sociology and history), and refers to his concept of ideal types - social action, domain, rationality. It reviews Weber's lectures, Der Nationalsttat und Volkswirtschaftpolitik (1895) and Politik als Beruf (1918), introducing Weber as a nationally perceptive, committed and involved thinker. The study concludes with Weber's conception of the politician's calling, discusses Weber's reflection of the present German political situation and his attempt to change the given political state of affairs.
The pejorative perception of catastrophic news signifies the deformed decoding of TV reality by audiences. This consideration is built on the psychological effect of illusion on the human psyche and ...reflects one of the fallacies which Richard Allen calls the pejorative illusion. This deformation is not necessary in human perception, and its occurrence is possible only in the moving arts, such as film and, in the sense used here, television performance, too. The pejorative illusion belongs to the learning reflection of TV and film values and it is one of the methods which enables people to escape into fictive film reality. People watching TV news, especially bad news, affected the same processes of escapism. The New York bombing catastrophe influenced people all over the world, and some spectators who followed the live broadcast of falling skyscrapers were first able to deny TV reality by thinking about a good, catastrophic film performance. In the end everyone accepted the reality of this terrible terrorist attack, but the first pejorative deformation raises the question of whether television is really able to mediate authentic reality.
In his book Między ukryciem a jawnością Between Hiddenness and Openness (2023), Professor Jacek Wojtysiak argues that on the assumption of atheistic naturalism, no convincing explanation can be given for the ‘great fact of faith,’ that is, the phenomenon of the historical persistence and universality of the belief in the existence of God. The purpose of this paper is to challenge this thesis. Drawing on selected theories from the field of the Cognitive Science of Religion, I sketch a naturalistic explanation of how religious belief arises.
W swojej książce Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej Jacek Wojtysiak podejmuje temat Bożego ukrycia.
In his book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology Jacek Wojtysiak takes up the issue of divine hiddenness. In the opening chapters he enters into a polemic with the argument of J.L. Schellenberg, who from the existence of reasonable unbelief draws the conclusion that God does not exist. In order to neutralize this argument, Wojtysiak reverses it, constructing an argument for the existence of God from the fact of the existence of reasonable believers, and then strengthens it to an argument from the great fact of faith (and its subsequent versions). I argue that Wojtysiak’s reversed arguments (from reasonable believers and from the great fact of faith) are not symmetrical to the initial argument from reasonable non-believers, because they are weaker. I point out that some of Wojtysiak’s arguments can be reversed by an atheist. I also raise the point that the conclusion of Wojtysiak’s final arguments is not satisfactory to a theist.
John L. Schellenberg, the author of the hiddenness argument, argues that if God existed, there would be no genuine nonbelievers. In his latest book, Jacek Wojtysiak states that a theist can reverse this reasoning and say that if God did not exist, there would be no genuine believers. He not only concludes that there are believers, it can be assumed that there are many more of them than nonbelievers. Thus, he can state the existence of the great fact of faith, against which the atheist is doubly helpless: firstly, he cannot explain it, and secondly, he is unable to present a parallel argument for atheism. In my article, I analyze the part of Wojtysiak’s book that is devoted to these issues and I come to the conclusion that an atheist is in a better position than the Polish philosopher suggests.
In Jacek Wojtysiak’s complex argument against the hiddenness argument of J.L. Schellenberg includes the premise of the existence of “nonresistant nonbelievers”. In this article, I present reasons why the classical theist should not accept this premise. Otherwise, he would have to assume that God is to blame for the existence of “nonresistant nonbelievers”. And this leads to the destructive conclusion for the theist that the Christian God is not a God of the omni-attributes.
The problem of the hiddenness of God is becoming an increasingly discussed philosophical topic. In my article, I would like to deal with the issue called by Jacek Wojtysiak (in his book Między jawnością a ukryciem Between Hiddenness and Openness) (Wojtysiak 2023) “testimonial knowledge” and connect it with Newman’s concept of implicit reasoning. Distinguishing between two types of reasoning — one spontaneous, practical, applicable to in the area of faith and morality, and the other: critical, analytical and retrospective, used in science, as well as in philosophy and theology — seems crucial to understanding the factual God’s hiddenness.
The essay is a translation of Immanuel Wallerstein's lecture, which he delivered in Vienna, March 2000, in the series „ Von der Notwendigkeit des Überflüssigen -Sozialwissenschaften und ...Gesellschaft". The original title of the lecture was „ Social Science in an Age of Transition”. The political events in Austria in spring 2000 prompted the author to modify the content and the title of the lecture. The essay expresses his protest against the racist rhetoric, as directly or indirectly used by J. Haider's Austrian Free Party, which became a member of the Austrian government. Moreover -and this is the main point of the article -the author explains and interprets European and Western xenophobia and racism by using his theory of the world system. The author uncovers the responsibility of all social sciences for their inability to disclose and to name the roots of racism, which dangerously threatens the contemporary world. When explaining eurocentrism and racism in European social sciences, the author starts with an analysis of their contemporary forms after 1989, moves back to the world system after 1945, and continues by putting racism into the context of the world system after 1492. The final part is devoted to the period of the chaotic transformation of the world system after 2000. Its outcome is intrinsically unpredictable. But the crisis opens the door to new developments in the social sciences, which will move from a mere analysis of the pan-European world, considered to be the world of modernity and civilisation, to a more complex understanding of the diversified global system. In times of major fluctuations, the social sciences have a chance to intervene in historical processes, and a moral responsibility to try to change the world into a more human one.
