Abstract This paper aims at looking at Shakespeare’s character Falstaff through the prism of some of the seven deadly sins. The paper doesn’t claim that it explores all the sins present in Falstaff’s ...personality. The main sins that this paper examines in Falstaff’s personality are the sins of gluttony, lust, avarice, sloth, and pride. The presence of so many sins in the personality of one character that are interconnected is known as concatenation of sins. As Bernard Spivack (1958) and David Wiles (1987) have explained, in many ways Falstaff serves as the Vice figure from the morality plays tempting Prince Hal. Since in the morality plays the Vice figure stems and is associated mainly to the seven deadly sins, this paper will try to show that the fact that Falstaff possesses so many sins can facilitate the possibility of him being identified as stemming from the Vice figure from the morality plays. I will try to find each of the afore-mentioned sins by analyzing Falstaff actions and inactions and by trying to find characteristics of the sins present in Falstaff’s behavior. This paper will also look at Falstaff’s fate and whether there is any similarity between the fate of the Vice figure in the morality plays and the fate of Falstaff in the second part.

Mode II constant amplitude fatigue delamination propagation tests were conducted at three different stress ratios, viz. R = 0.0, 0.5, and −1.0 using modified three-point bend test fixture and end ...notched flexure (ENF) test specimens of unidirectional IMA/M21 carbon fiber composite. Delamination length was measured by compliance technique. The delamination propagation rate (da/dN) plots were constructed for various stress ratios. Using an equivalent energy release rate concept, Geq, all the curves were merged into a single curve in the form of Paris equation, da/dN = C(Geq)k. The Paris constants, C and k, determined from the experimental results were subsequently used in predicting the delamination propagation life under a standard mini FALSTAFF spectrum load sequence. Experiments were also conducted under the same spectrum load sequence with various reference loads to determine the propagation lives. A reasonably good correlation was observed between the predicted and experimental mode II delamination propagation life under spectrum loads.

Surface enhancement techniques, such as laser peening, have wide applications in the aerospace industry. They increase the structural component’s life by imparting compressive residual stresses around the critical locations where the cracks are likely to initiate and later propagate leading to component failure. However, the compressive residual stresses can relax due to the loading conditions and reduce the laser peening effectiveness. Under such a condition, re-peening or re-laser peening a component already in service can further increase its component life. This research develops a method to predict the optimum re-peening time for maximum fatigue life under realistic loading conditions. An optimization problem is set up to illustrate the application of this method to an aircraft lug problem. Results from the investigation indicate that re-peening this component ∼50–55% of its expected fatigue life maximizes the component’s fatigue life. The proposed approach, proven to be able to obtain optimal process parameters for improving the fatigue resistance of the component, can significantly reduce the costs for experimental testing.

Tony Britten’s film Falstaff (2008) is an unusual, even radical opera-film. An updated treatment with a colloquial English translation and a chamber arrangement, and lacking many operatic elements, ...the film enacts a remediation of opera-film through the medium of television. Remediation, as conceived by Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin, refers to “the representation of one medium in another,” and its goal “is to refashion or rehabilitate other media.” Britten’s Falstaff is strongly influenced by British popular television, especially British situation comedy. Sitcoms that emphasize working-class culture and “lads’ humor”—such as Only Fools and Horses and Men Behaving Badly respectively—resonate conspicuously with this Falstaff. In addition, television features prominently in it by virtue of the fact that protagonist John Falstaff is a former television star. The implications of this remediated opera-film for Verdi and Boito’s opera are also of considerable interest. In critical ways associated with music, text, and narrative, the opera is highly suited to Britten’s conception. Building on the work of Denise Gallo, I propose that Britten’s film marks another moment in the struggle for national ownership of the Merry Wives material. In this sense the film articulates an “Englishizing” of Verdi and Boito’s opera. The new kind of opera-film represented by Britten’s Falstaff reinforces the idea of “television opera” as a genre that takes advantage of television’s medial and aesthetic capabilities, and expands its purview to adaptations as well as new operas.
This paper focuses on the genre of drolls as they were compiled in Francis Kirkman‘s collection The Wits or Sport upon Sport, published in 1672 and 1673. The anthology includes scenes from Hamlet or ...A Midsummer Night's Dream and draws upon characters like Falstaff and others. By description and analysis of these dramatic pieces, I would like to draw one's attention to the genre that is almost unknown to the history of English speaking drama. This article focuses on the process of rethinking Shakespeare so as not only to entertain people in the critical period of English history, but also to preserve the dramatic conventions that William Shakespeare and his contemporaries created. It also considers the changes the authors of the drolls made when adapting the parent plays of William Shakespeare.
Orson Welles, a boy from Kenosha, Wisconsin, was one of the most audacious Shakespearians who ever lived. He recited soliloquies as a child, wrote a book on the plays as a teenager, and at age 17 ...roamed across Ireland before brazenly (and successfully) presenting himself at the Abbey Theatre as a distinguished American actor. Welles also created three of the most ambitious Shakespeare films. As an American pretender, a colonial presuming to re-interpret the greatest British writer, Welles approached Shakespeare with a mix of bravado and insecurity. This paper explores how Welles' American nature informs these roles and, especially, his final Shakespeare film, Chimes at Midnight (1965). In this production, Welles plays Falstaff and is understandably identified with the role, but it could be argued that he speaks more directly through Prince Hal, whose anxiety about inheriting the throne might be reflected in the way an American Shakespearian seeks to be accepted by the British keepers of the text. The words of Hal's father, Henry IV- Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown -might apply to Welles' American-inflected depictions of kings and princes who do not entirely believe in their own royal agency. The tension between Welles‘ brashness and his fretfulness created some of the most memorable Shakespeare in the cinema.
Most metallic components and structures are subjected, in service, to random or variable amplitude loadings. There are many examples: vehicles subjected to loadings and vibrations caused by road ...irregularity and engine, structures exposed to wind, off-shore platforms undergoing wave-loadings, and so on. Just like constant amplitude loadings, random and variable amplitude loadings can make fatigue cracks initiate and propagate, even up to catastrophic failures. Engineers faced with the problem of estimating the structural integrity and the fatigue strength of metallic structures, or their propensity to fracture, usually make use of theoretical, numerical, or experimental approaches. This reprint collects a series of recent scientific contributions aimed at providing an up-to-date overview of approaches and case studies—theoretical, numerical or experimental—on several topics in the field of fracture, fatigue strength, and the structural integrity of metallic components subjected to random or variable amplitude loadings.
