Twitter has recently gained popularity in emergency medicine (EM). Opinion leaders on Twitter have significant influence on the conversation and content, yet little is known about these opinion ...leaders. We aimed to describe a methodology to identify the most influential emergency physicians (EP) on Twitter and present a current list.
We analyzed 2,234 English-language EPs on Twitter from a previously published list of Twitter accounts generated by a snowball sampling technique. Using NodeXL software, we performed a network analysis of these EPs and ranked them on three measures of influence: in-degree centrality, eigenvector centrality, and betweenness centrality. We analyzed the top 100 users in each of these three measures of influence and compiled a list of users found in the top 100 in all three measures.
Of the 300 total users identified by one of the measures of influence, there were 142 unique users. Of the 142 unique users, 61 users were in the top 100 on all three measures of influence. We identify these 61 users as the most influential EM Twitter users.
We both describe a method for identifying the most influential users and provide a list of the 61 most influential EPs on Twitter as of January 1, 2016. This application of network science to the EM Twitter community can guide future research to better understand the networked global community of EM.
Julius Caesar (100–44 BC) was one of the most charismatic political figures in history. Best remembered for his military achievements, he was also a writer, historian, and statesman. Through his ...constitutional reforms, he played an important role in the events that led to the end of the Roman Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire. Historical sources reveal that Julius Caesar suffered from headaches, seizures, and personality changes. In this essay, we highlight the life of Julius Caesar, with emphasis on the potential origin of his sickness. Although a definitive diagnosis obviously cannot be made, as new published studies showed a possible cerebrovascular etiology, a new hypothetical diagnosis is presented.
Icono-diagnosis, the retrospective image-based diagnosis of pathologies, was applied to the canvas “Portrait of an Old Man” (1595–1600), an attributed self-portrait painted by El Greco. The presence ...of congenital enophthalmos, strabismus, probable amblyopia and signs of left neglect were found. We assume these sign may be consistent an ischemic event affecting the right middle cerebral artery supply territory. Historically, motor activity was not compromised and the painter was able to return to portraiture. Documental evidence indicates, that a few years later (1608), El Greco suffered another cerebrovascular event resulting in agraphia. The pictorial and historical evidence is consistent with multiple ischemic events resulting in progressive disabilities with fluctuating course characterized by temporary improvements and worsening before his death in 1614.

In a recent observation article in Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance (JEP:HPP; Varlet & Richardson, 2015) the 100-m sprint final of the World Championship in ...Athletics in Berlin of 2009 (i.e., the current world record race) was analyzed. That study reported occurrence of spontaneous, unintentional interpersonal synchronization between Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay, the respective winner and runner-up of that race. In the present commentary article, however, we argue that the results and conclusion of that study cannot be warranted because of methodological shortcomings. We addressed the same research question and reassessed the same race using an alternative data analysis method. These results revealed that as yet there is no sufficient ground to conclude that in the 100-m world record race synchronization occurred between Bolt and Gay. Yet, our reanalysis suggested that even at this very elite level the individual movement frequencies did seem to vary to such an extent that synchronization would theoretically still be possible, thereby providing incentives for further examination of potential unintentional synchronization in coactive sports.
Public Significance Statement
While a previous study suggested that in the 100-m sprint world record race unintended synchronization occurred between winner Usain Bolt and runner-up Tyson Gay, the present study demonstrates that as yet there is no sufficient ground to conclude this. Still, reanalysis also unveiled that Bolt and Gay varied their step rates to an unexpectedly large degree, given which synchronization would theoretically still be possible. This further opens up the question when and why athletes in coactive sports would show such variability and potentially synchronization.
