In this study, Ronald Berman examines the work of the critic/novelist Edmund Wilson and the art of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway as they wrestled with the problems of language, experience, ...perception and reality in the "age of jazz." By focusing specifically on aesthetics - the ways these writers translated everyday reality into language - Berman challenges and redefines many routinely accepted ideas concerning the legacy of these authors. Fitzgerald is generally thought of as a romantic, but Berman shows that we need to expand the idea of Romanticism to include its philosophy. Hemingway, widely viewed as a stylist who captured experience by simplifying language, is revealed as consciously demonstrating reality's resistance to language. Between these two renowned writers stands Wilson, who is critically influenced by Alfred North Whitehead, as well as Dewey, James, Santayana and Freud. By patiently mapping the correctness of these philosophers, historians, literary critics and writers, Berman aims to open a gateway into the era. This work should be of interest to scholars of American literature, philosophy and aesthetics; to academic libraries; to students of intellectual history; and to general readers interested in Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Wilson.

Francis turbines, as other hydraulic turbines, are custom-designed for nominal operating conditions specific to each power plant. However, they may need to be operated at off-design flow conditions ...because of variable reservoir levels and flowrates. Operating the turbine at off-design points can cause cavitation. Four cavitation types can be observed on Francis turbine runners. These are leading edge, travelling bubble, draft tube swirl and inter-blade vortex cavitation. They may cause erosion, reduction in efficiency, vibration, instability of operation and noise. Runner blades must be designed taking the flow characteristics into account for design conditions to prevent cavitation. Cavitation limits for the off-design points must also be determined. In this study, the runner geometry of an actual hydroelectric power plant that was designed and implemented in 1960s, is redesigned with the help of the state of the art computational fluid dynamics techniques for cavitation free operation. The cavitation limits for the off-design points are also determined.

Undesirable pressure pulsations will be induced by flow instabilities in the draft tube when the Francis turbine operates at off-design conditions, which have multiple effects on the steady operation, and the effects vary with the operating condition. Therefore, the establishment of a comprehensive state evaluation index of the draft tube pressure pulsation (DTPP) is of great practical significance. In this study, a comprehensive evaluation method of DTPP has been proposed based on Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) and information entropy. First, the frequency components of DTPP are separated by the EEMD method which is more suitable for the analysis of non-stationary pressure pulsation signal. Second, to eliminate the effects of noise, a targeted EEMD noise reduction method which is combined with autocorrelation analysis and wavelet soft-threshold de-noising method is designed for the DTPP signal. Then, index energy values of all frequency components are calculated and normalized, and the values of the signals’ characteristic entropy are obtained by using the normalized index energy vector as the input vector. Finally, characteristic entropy values of all pressure pulsation signals measured from the draft tube are integrated into an index, which is named as the comprehensive characteristic entropy of DTPP (E_DTPP). The state of DTPP is comprehensively evaluated by E_DTPP. This method was evaluated by the actual measuring data of a 200 MW hydroelectric generating unit. The case study indicates that this single index can be utilized to evaluate the actual state of DTPP, and pressure pulsations will have distinct influence on the operation stability when E_DTPP increases obviously. The efforts of this study provide a novel and useful method for the comprehensive state evaluation of DTPP, and the E_DTPP could be used as an index for the stability of Francis turbine.
Erosive wear has been a serious concern in mainly run-of-the-river medium and small Francis turbines from both economic and technical perspectives. With the aim of finding ways to mitigate erosive ...wear, this paper proposes a methodology to obtain, via an optimization approach, geometries that maximize the resistance to erosive wear by hard particles and cavitation of the internal components (runner, guide vanes and cover labyrinths) of a Francis turbine. This improvement was implemented to reduce the costs of corrective maintenance and to maximize the machines’ availability and energy generation profits. The methodology used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and optimization techniques, such as the design of experiments of the factorial type, artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms with a multi-point approach, which includes two operation points, and a multi-objective approach, which simultaneously considers erosive wear by hard particles, cavitation damage and efficiency. It was found that the new geometries of the analysed components of the turbine can allow a decrease of up to 73% in the wear rate, maintaining an efficiency close to the original value throughout the operating range. With the optimized geometry, a mechanical check was performed using finite element simulations to validate that the optimal geometries had the required strength.
