This article presents an overview of Greek ethnography. It argues that ethnography in Greece cannot be seen as separate from its preceding fields of history and folklore studies, alongside Greece ...itself being viewed as a research field by foreign anthropologists. Because of the late introduction of anthropology in Greece it followed very quickly the main theoretical stream of postmodernism in its view of Greek society. The main argument of this article is that the introduction of postmodernism in Greek Anthropology prevented a dialogue with the pre-existing field research work that had been conducted in Greece by non Greek Ethnographers and Greek Folklorists or Historians. This fact has specific consequences at the epistemological, theoretical and methodological level of contemporary Greek Ethnography.

In my paper I focus on the well-known John Cuthbert Lawson’s study about Modern Greek folklore (1910) and I venture to verify if it may be regarded as a reliable source of information about Greek ...folk beliefs. I base my argument on the eschatological remarks Lawson made concerning the personification of Death – Charos and his relationship to the Christian Angels. Confronting Lawson’s views and his source material with other similar demotic songs, mainly from the collections he had had access to, I try to show in what way the older collections of folk-songs might have distorted or falsified the eschatological images of Charos and the Angels, and what he overlooked while analyzing the sources. I also shed some light on possible influences of Byzantine orthodoxy on Modern Greek folk tradition to which Greek demotic songs belong.

One of a series addressing different countries, this article presents a ‘Top Ten’ choice of books about Greece plus forty or so supplementary titles. ‘Greece’ is conceptualized as including not only ...the modern nation state but also the broader Greek oikoumene spanning 5000 years of history. Continuities through history are emphasized to avoid a polarized perspective of ‘ancient’ and ‘modern’ Greece. The books selected cover: history, myth and folklore, biography, fiction, poetry, art, travel, society and environment, philosophy, and current affairs. Together they convey not only the distinctiveness and complexity of Greek civilization but also its perennial international significance.
Cet article s'intéresse à la création des trois musées nationaux d'Athènes, dans le contexte particulier d'émergence d'une identité nationale néo-hellénique. Ces musées -le Musée archéologique ...national, le Musée byzantin et chrétien et le musée d'Art populaire grec —sont abordés ici en tant qu'institutions relayant le projet national. Ils ont été chargés d'élaborer et de diffuser continuité historique de la nation, de l'Antiquité aux Temps modernes, et son unicité. C'est dans ce contexte que les musées nationaux utiliseront les sciences (archéologie, histoire et laographie, ou folklore grec) pour renforcer leur objectif. La politique de chacun d'eux illustre parfaitement la volonté nationale d'occulter les questions de discontinuité et d'altérité. Les auteurs ont pris soin de faire figurer, en fin d'article, les résultats d'une enquête effectuée auprès d'un échantillon de visiteurs, sur la manière dont ils perçoivent ces trois musées. This article is concerned with the creation of the three national museums of Athens in the particuliar context of an emerging modern Greek national identity. These museums — the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine and Christian Museum and the Museum of Greek Folk Art — are studied here as institutions that carry on the national project. They have to elaborate and diffuse the historical continuity of the nation from ancient to modern times and its unicity, too. It is in this context that national museums use sciences (archaeology, history and folklore science) to support their objective. Their own policies perfectly illustrate the national will to hide problems of discontinuity and alterity. Lastly the authors present the results of a study made on a sample of visitors in order to determine how they perceived these three museums. Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit der Schöpfung der drei Nationalmuseen Athens in dem besonderen Kontext einer auftauchenden neuhellenischen nationalen Identität. Diese Museen — das archaeologische Nationalmuseum, das byzantinische Museum und das Museum für griechische Volkskunst — werden hier als Institutionen betrachtet, die das nationale Projekt fortfuhren. Sie sollen die historische Kontinuität der Nation vom Altertum bis zur Neuzeit sowie ihre Einzigartigkeit ausarbeiten und verbreiten. Es ist in diesem Kontext, dass die Nationalmuseen Wissenschaften (Archäologie, Geschichte und « Laographie » oder Ethnographie des griechischen Volks) benutzen, um ihr Ziel zu unterstützen. Ihre einzelne Politik illustriert vollkommen den nationalen Willen, die Fragen der Diskontinuität und Alterität zu verdecken. Schliesslich geben die Autorinen die Ergebnisse einer bei Besuchern durchgeführten Umfrage zu der Weise wie sie diese drei Museen wahrnehmen. Το κείμενο παρακολουθεί τη γέννηση και τη λειτουργία των τριών εθνικών μουσείων της Αθήνας στα χωροχρονικά συμφραζόμενα της διαμόρφωσης της νεοελληνικής εθνικής ταυτότητας. Τα μουσεία αυτά - το Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, το Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο και το Μουσείο Ελληνικής Λαϊκής Τέχνης, προσεγγίζονται ως ιδεολογικοί και πολιτικοί θεσμοί που αναλαμβάνουν τη διαμόρφωση και διάχυση της αφήγησης του εθνικού πολιτισμού σύμφωνα με το ιστορικό σχήμα της τρισχιλιετούς συνέχειας και τις τρεις περιόδους της ιστορίας του έθνους - αρχαιότητα, μεσαίωνας και νεώτερα χρόνια. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό εξετάζεται η συνεισφορά των εθνικών μουσείων στη διαμόρφωση της αφήγησης του εθνικού πολιτισμού, οι σχέσεις τους με την ανάπτυξη επιστημονικών λόγων (ιδιαίτερα της αρχαιολογίας, της λαογραφίας, και της ιστορίας) και οι συναφείς πρακτικές του στο επίπεδο των επιλογών : τι αναλαμβάνει το κάθε μουσείο να προβάλλει και αντίστοιχα, τι επιλέγει να αφήσει έξω από το πεδίο δραστηριότητας του, στη λογική της συγκάλυψης της ετερότητας. Παράλληλα με την ιστορική προσέγγιση, η διεξαγωγή έρευνας με αντικείμενο τις σχέσεις των εθνικών μουσείων με το κοινό των επισκεπτών τους επιτρέπει να αποσαφηνιστεί για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα η 'φυσιογνωμία' των επισκεπτών των μουσείων, να καταγραφεί η αποτίμηση της εμπειρίας τους απο τους ίδιους με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στη διερεύνηση της υποδοχής των μηνυμάτων που ενέχονται στη μουσειογραφική εκδοχή της εθνικής αφήγησης...
