In Nahe auf Distanz wird der Bedeutungswandel von Fotografien und Videos im Zeitalter des Internets untersucht. Die Beitrage widmen sich exemplarisch u.a. den Selfie-Protesten, Bildern des Arabischen ...Fruhlings, des Israelisch-Palastinensischen Konflikts, der Gezi-Park-Proteste, des Syrienkriegs sowie der Bildpolitik des Islamischen Staats . Deren Potenziale, auch uber weite Distanzen hinweg affektiv und kommunikativ wirksam zu werden und politische Handlungen auszulosen, werden kritisch analysiert. Der hier reflektierte Bildbegriff basiert auf digitaler Ubertragung und ist von permanenten Bildmodifikationen durch Datentransfers und Postproduktionen gepragt.

River floodplain soils are sinks and potential sources for toxic trace metals like Cu and Zn. We hypothesize that stable Cu and Zn isotope ratios reflect both the mobilization and the sources of ...metals. We determined the soil properties, the concentrations and partitioning of Cu and Zn, and variations in δ65Cu and δ66Zn values in a core obtained from an Aquic Udifluvent developed on a freshwater intertidal mudflat of the River Elbe, Germany. The core was sampled at 2 cm intervals to a depth of 34 cm, which corresponds to approximately 9 yr of sedimentation. Elevated concentrations of Cu (up to 320 μg g−1) and Zn (up to 2080 μg g−1) indicated anthropogenic pollution. At the time of sampling the redox conditions changed from oxic (Eh 200 to 400 mV, above 22 cm deep) to strongly anoxic conditions (‐100 to ‐200 mV, below 22 cm deep). The δ65Cu values varied systematically with depth (from ‐0.02 to 0.16‰) and were correlated with the Fe, C, and N concentrations. Although pre‐depositional variations cannot be ruled out, the systematic variation with depth suggests post‐sedimentation fractionation of δ65Cu in response to seasonally variable organic matter deposition and redox conditions. In contrast, the δ66ZnIRMM values were uniform (from ‐0.07 to 0.01‰) throughout the core, indicating that the Zn isotopes did not significantly fractionate after deposition and that the Zn sources were homogeneous throughout the sedimentation.

This landmark book is the first comprehensive account of the lives of the Jews who remained in Germany immediately following the war. Gathering never-before- published eyewitness accounts from ...Holocaust survivors, Michael Brenner presents a remarkable history of this period. While much has been written on the Holocaust itself, until now little has been known about the fate of those survivors who remained in Germany. Jews emerging from concentration camps would learn that most of their families had been murdered and their communities destroyed. Furthermore, all Jews in the country would face the stigma of living, as a 1948 resolution of the World Jewish Congress termed it, on "bloodsoaked German soil." Brenner brings to life the psychological, spiritual, and material obstacles they surmounted as they rebuilt their lives in Germany. At the heart of his narrative is a series of fifteen interviews Brenner conducted with some of the most important witnesses who played an active role in the reconstruction--including presidents of Jewish communities, rabbis, and journalists. Based on the Yiddish and German press and unpublished archival material, the first part of this book provides a historical introduction to this fascinating topic. Here the author analyzes such diverse aspects as liberation from concentration camps, cultural and religious life among the Jewish Displaced Persons, antisemitism and philosemitism in post-war Germany, and the complex relationship between East European and German Jews. A second part consists of the fifteen interviews, conducted by Brenner, with witnesses representing the diverse background of the postwar Jewish community. While most of them were camp survivors, others returned from exile or came to Germany as soldiers of the Jewish Brigade or with international Jewish aid organizations. A third part, which covers the development of the Jewish community in Germany from the 1950s until today, concludes the book.

Change processes are taking place in different European countries, based on different contextual backgrounds, with diverse motives, actors, and aims, but nevertheless in a way that similarly affects ...both religious pluralization and secularization. In European societies, religious pluralization is not only a fact, but it also poses a challenge for a better or a new understanding of the different religions themselves and for the role they play in society. The following contribution focusses on France and Germany, with special attention to one of the federal German states: Hamburg. The results show: A new interest in religion and interreligious dialogue on the one hand, and an ongoing secularization on the other are not in confrontation but related to each other. Despite an institutional tradition of separation between state and religion especially in France, there is a growing awareness that attention to religion need not counteract this tradition but may be necessary as an instrument including all parts of a religiously and culturally diverse population. This is also the case, in a different and striking manner, in Germany as a whole and in Hamburg in particular. We find a new interest in religion and dialogue in many different academic disciplines as well as by actors from different religious communities, in school, society, and politics.
Die Sekundarstufe ist gekennzeichnet durch eine Sequenz von Übergängen, an denen Ungleichheiten durch Leistungsdisparitäten (primäre Effekte) und Bildungsentscheidungen (sekundäre Effekte) nach ...sozialer Herkunft relevant werden. Diese Herkunftseffekte werden mit dem vorliegenden Beitrag erstmals anhand von Daten einer vollständigen Schülerkohorte (Hamburger KESS-Studie) über den gesamten Verlauf der Sekundarstufe vom Übergang ins Gymnasium bis zur Studienintention analysiert. Eine Dekomposition und Quantifizierung primärer und sekundärer Effekte mit der KHB-Methode erfolgt dabei erstmals auch für den Eintritt in die Oberstufe. Abnehmende absolute Herkunftseffekte über den Bildungsverlauf, auf die bisherige Befunde verschiedener Stichproben verweisen, können mit dieser Studie zum Teil bestätigt werden. Zum vermuteten relativen Bedeutungszuwachs sekundärer Effekte zeigen die Ergebnisse kein eindeutiges Muster: Beim Wechsel ins Gymnasium überwiegen primäre Effekte leicht, wenn Noten als Leistungsindikator verwendet werden. Beim Eintritt in die Oberstufe bleibt die Relation nahezu unverändert. Erst bei der Studienintention fällt die relative Bedeutung sekundärer Effekte größer aus. (DIPF/Orig.)
Secondary education is characterised by a sequence of transitions that are linked to educational inequality. Regarding social background effects, inequalities relate to disparities in educational achievement (primary effects) and educational decisions (secondary effects). In the present study, both primary and secondary effects are analysed based on an entire student cohort in the Hamburg school system (KESS study) across the course of secondary education, i.e. from entering secondary school to aiming for higher education. The KHB method is applied in order to decompose the effects, including transitions to upper secondary education. In line with previous research, total social background effects decrease across educational trajectories. No clear pattern emerges concerning an assumed increase in the relative importance of secondary effects. Primary effects operationalised by school grades are slightly predominant in the transition to lower secondary education, and nearly the same ratio is found for the transition to upper secondary education. However, regarding the aim to enter higher education, the relative importance of secondary effects is more clearly discernible. (DIPF/Orig.)
