In this paper, we engage with Heidi Grasswick's argument on epistemic distrust as an epistemic value. We show how expert communities have in the past perpetuated epistemic harm to people of colour as ...recipients of knowledge. We highlight the adverse effects of these harms in our social milieu by limiting our discussion to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in sub-Saharan Africa. We then conclude that the scepticism of the COVID-19 vaccines by people of colour within the aforementioned locale can be understood in the context of epistemic distrust. Finally, We show how epistemic credibility toward the expert community, precisely scientific communities, by the non-expert community can be restored. The name “Heidi” is known and loved all over the world, due to Swiss author, Johanna Spyri’s works, Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre (1880) and Heidi kann brauchen, was es gelernt hat (1881), which form ...part of the classic international children’s literature canon. These stories have since crossed national boarders, by manifesting transnationally in several culture products. The focus of this article lies on the transnational traffic between the original Heidi (1881) and its adaptations. Because “Heidi” as a cultural phenomenon contains universal themes, the product was able to spread globally. This journey stretches from the Swiss Alps, to Japan and finally finds a home in South Africa and Afrikaans. Included in the article is an overview of how the Heidi text manifested in several cultures and its transnational movement, spanning time and place. The popularity of the animation series in South Africa among Afrikaans speaking people is analysed, along with suggestions for possible reasons for this big following and prevalence . The central argument of the article is that “Heidi” as cultural product has had a transnational journey from the Alps, to anime and Afrikaans.
This collection showcases a multivalent approach to the study of literary multilingualism, embodied in contemporary Nordic literature. While previous approaches to literary multilingualism have ...tended to take a textual or authorship focus, this book advocates for a theoretical perspective which reflects the multiplicity of languages in use in contemporary literature emerging from increased globalization and transnational interaction. Drawing on a multimodal range of examples from contemporary Nordic literature, these eighteen chapters illustrate the ways in which multilingualism is dynamic rather than fixed, resulting from the interactions between authors, texts, and readers as well as between literary and socio-political institutions. Pavlovian conditioning is evident in every species in which it has been assessed, and there is a consensus about its interpretation across behavioral,1,2 brain,3,4,5,6 and computational ...analyses7,8,9,10,11: conditioned behavior reflects the formation of a directional associative link from the memory of one stimulus (e.g., a visual stimulus) to another (e.g., food), with learning stopping when there is no error between the prediction generated by the visual stimulus and what happens next (e.g., food). This consensus fails to anticipate the results that we report here. In our experiments with rats, we find that arranging predictive (visual stimulus→food) and nonpredictive (food→visual stimulus) relationships produces marked and sustained changes in conditioned behaviors when the visual stimulus is presented alone. Moreover, the type of relationship affects (1) the distribution of conditioned behaviors related to the properties of both food (called goal-tracking) and the visual stimulus (called sign-tracking) and (2) when in the visual stimulus, these two behaviors are evident. These results represent an impetus for a fundamental shift in how Pavlovian conditioning is interpreted: animals learn about the relationship between two stimuli irrespective of the order in which they are presented, but they exhibit this knowledge in different ways. This interpretation and our new results are captured by a recent model of Pavlovian conditioning,12,13 HeiDI, and both are consistent with the need for animals to represent the fact that the impact of a cause (e.g., the ingestion of nutrients or the bite of a predator) can be felt before or after the cause has been perceived.

The Swiss Light Source facilitates fragment‐based drug‐discovery campaigns for academic and industrial users through the Fast Fragment and Compound Screening (FFCS) software suite. This framework is ...further enriched by the option to utilize the Smart Digital User (SDU) software for automated data collection across the PXI, PXII and PXIII beamlines. In this work, the newly developed HEIDI webpage (https://heidi.psi.ch) is introduced: a platform crafted using state‐of‐the‐art software architecture and web technologies for sample management of rotational data experiments. The HEIDI webpage features a data‐review tab for enhanced result visualization and provides programmatic access through a representational state transfer application programming interface (REST API). The migration of the local FFCS MongoDB instance to the cloud is highlighted and detailed. This transition ensures secure, encrypted and consistently accessible data through a robust and reliable REST API tailored for the FFCS software suite. Collectively, these advancements not only significantly elevate the user experience, but also pave the way for future expansions and improvements in the capabilities of the system.
The HEIDI experiment‐management platform supports high‐throughput fragment screening and facilitates structure‐based research, design and drug discovery by both academic and industrial users at the Swiss Light Source crystallization facility and macromolecular crystallography beamlines. Collectively, the software solutions streamline sample preparation, beamline data acquisition and data processing, and facilitate fully automated experiments.
