In the extensive work of the Dubrovnik-born Benedictine Lodovico Tuberon de Crieva, „Commentaria de temporibus suis” describing the events in the Mediterranean in the years 1490–1522, there is a ...small passage about the events on the island of Hvar (ital. Lesina). The island was then, together with most of the Dalmatian coast, under the rule of the Venetian Republic. On Hvar in 1510, a popular uprising against the local nobles broke out, which lasted with varying intensity until 1514. The Venetian authorities then sent considerable armed forces, which, after defeating the rebels at sea and on land, suppressed the rebellion. It is surprising, however, that Tuberon suggests in the above-mentioned passage that the outbreak of the revolt could have been provoked by the Venetians themselves, who feared the nobility allegedly favoring the King of Hungary. He also mentions the leading role of a clergyman who was supposed to encourage the plebs to act and initiate a revolt. Taking the mentioned text of Tuberon as a starting point, the author analyzes the political and social situation on the island of Hvar as well as the background and course of the events in the years 1510–1514. The author's goal is to establish what the grounds for Tuberon's presumptions were and to what extent they are true.
This paper examines the special characteristics of tourism development on the Adriatic islands, focusing on Hvar Town, the largest town and port on the island of Hvar and its busiest destination. The ...research was carried out using the method of semi-structured interviews. A total of 30 interviews were conducted with the local residents (mostly employed in the tourism sector) and temporary/seasonal visitors. The intention was to learn about the current state of tourism in the town and look at the possible scenarios for the future development of sustainable tourism, based on its three inter-connected aspects: environmental, economic and socio-cultural. The research also considered the influence of various tourism actors on the development, the possibilities of agritourism, the role and importance of cultural tourism and, finally yet importantly, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the last year's drastically shortened summer season. The results show that mass tourism (and its subset party tourism) have dominated the tourist offer since 2000 onwards, changing the reputation of Hvar as the elite travel destination or the family holiday destination it used to have before.
The paper addresses trends in tourism industry as regards the issue of indecent and problematic behaviours of guests on the Island of Hvar in the interwar period, with special focus on reactions of ...Miho Pušić, bishop of Diocese Brač-Hvar-Vis, and his opposition to relativization of morality considering consequential repercussions for island population.
Štoviše, biskup Pušić naglašava kako su mnogi podlegli grešnoj toleranciji, nemarnosti i nesmotrenosti, zanemarujući svoju dužnost u čuvanju i zaštiti javnog morala.
This paper describes and contextualizes one segment of culinary practices by an older generation of men on the island of Hvar. The practices are not realized as everyday housework, but as part of ...social practices of free time. In contrast to the routinized everyday female cooking typically described through the concept of caring labor, male culinary practices belong to leisure. Still, the range of meanings that men attribute to private cooking is wide and varied. Without going in detail into the implications of gender roles, this article is an attempt to shed light on male culinary practices and rituals, particularly those related to social life. Their identity potential and importance, as well as significance in the transfer of culinary knowledge, is frequently completely overlooked.
Jurja i Tripuna.
The chief topic of this article is analysis of inter-connections among emigrants from Island of Hvar within the Croatian confraternity of SS George and Tryphon in Venice in the period from the fifteenth up to eighteenth century. The article is based upon analysis of the archival sources kept in the State Archive in Venice (mostly last wills) and on the records from the Archives of the Confraternity of SS George and Tryphon (income records, lists of members and confraternity officials). The analysis has revealed that throughout the investigated centuries the emigrants from Hvar were one of the most important regional groups of Croats in Venice. Moreover, in the seventeenth century they were the most prominent amongst all the other brothers from Dalmatia (including emigrants from Boka kotorska). At the end author provides a complete list of all the investigated emigrants from Island of Hvar, who were involved in the activities of the Confraternity of SS George and Tryphon in Venice.
Uz pomoć sintagme “prekomjerni turizam” u radu se analiziraju percepcije lokalnoga stanovništva o negativnom utjecaju turizma u specifičnom prostornom, temporalnom, demografskom i socio-ekonomskom ...kontekstu grada Hvara.
Bearing in mind the term “overtourism,” the paper analyzes the perceptions of the local population about the negative impact of tourism in the specific spatial, temporal, demographic, and socio-economic context of the city of Hvar. It demonstrates that the negative effects of tourism in the city bear resemblance to those in other places exposed to overtourism, but also that the local context (size and space of the city, the monoculture of tourism and its seasonality, and the engagement of the entire population in tourism) compound the social and material effects of overtourism in the city and makes it difficult to stop its growth and influence. The analysis is based on ethnographic research and monitoring of social networks.

U visoko vrijedne kulturne atrakcije spadaju i Grapčeva špilja, sustav tvrđava u Hvaru i Vrboskoj, samostani u Hvaru i Starom Gradute drugi sakralni objekti sa svojim bogatim umjetničkim fundusom.
