A 23-year-old, right handed women has suffered from supplementary motor seizures manifesting tonic followed by clonic contractions of the left foot, occasionally spreading to the left hand and trunk, ...since the age of 7 years. The mean frequency of seizures on admission was about 10 times per day. A brain MRI showed an abnormal intensity area about 3 cm in diameter in the right mesial frontal lobe involving the superior frontal and cingulate gyri. Six habitual seizures were recorded during long-term monitoring with digital EEG segments time-locked to the clonic contractions of the left foot, a negative spike was detected about 50 ms before the EMG onset at the midline fronto-central area slightly lateralized to the left. In the focal motor seizure arising from the mesial frontal lobe like in the present case, jerk-locked back averaging helps detecting the epileptiform activity which is otherwise undetectable.

It is an essential technique for the moving user nodes (UNs) with clock offset and clock skew to resolve the joint localization and synchronization (JLAS) problem. Existing iterative maximum ...likelihood methods using sequential one-way time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements from the anchor nodes' (AN) broadcast signals require a good initial guess and have a computational complexity that grows with the number of iterations, given the size of the problem. In this paper, we propose a new closed-form JLAS approach, namely CFJLAS, which achieves the asymptotically optimal solution in one shot without initialization when the noise is small, and has a low computational complexity. After squaring and differencing the sequential TOA measurement equations, we devise two intermediate variables to reparameterize the non-linear problem, and convert it to a simpler one of solving two simultaneous quadratic equations. We then solve the equations analytically to obtain a raw closed-form JLAS estimation. Finally, we apply a weighted least squares (WLS) step to optimize the estimation. We derive the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB), analyze the estimation error, and show that the estimation accuracy of the CFJLAS reaches the CRLB under the small noise condition. The complexity of the new CFJLAS is only determined by the size of the problem, unlike the conventional iterative method, whose complexity is additionally multiplied by the number of iterations. Simulations in a 2D scene verify that the estimation accuracies of the new CFJLAS method all reach the CRLB under the small noise condition. Compared with the conventional iterative method, the proposed new CFJLAS method does not require initialization, obtains the optimal solution under the small noise condition, and has a low computational complexity.
The joint localization and synchronization (JLAS) of moving agents with clock offsets is critical to facilitating location services for Internet of Things (IoT). Existing methods using one-way ...time-of-arrival measurements require anchors to be synchronized and the agent's motion to be modeled with a constant velocity. However, the requirement of synchronization between anchors limits the flexibility and scalability of IoT networks. Moreover, existing methods are inapplicable for agents that perform arbitrary motions. In this study, we developed a set of methods to solve the JLAS problem in asynchronous networks. First, we modeled the motion of the moving agent and classified it into two categories: 1) acceleration and 2) time-varying motion. We showed that the existing modeling motion is a special case of acceleration motion. Second, for the case of acceleration motion with priori information, we proposed the optimal JLAS method, namely, JLAS-KAM, to compensate for the movement-caused estimation error. Next, we developed a maximum likelihood estimator, namely, JLAS-UAM, to jointly estimate the position, velocity, and acceleration of the agent in the absence of priori information. Third, for the case of time-varying motion, we developed the optimal JLAS method, namely, JLAS-TVM, to jointly estimate the agent position and velocity at each time instant. Moreover, iterative algorithms were proposed to solve optimization problems. We derived the Cramer-Rao lower bound for three proposed methods and analyzed their performance. Simulation results verified the theoretical analysis of the estimation performance and revealed the characteristics and advantages of the proposed methods.
