This study measured the physiological response caused by the attack and defence of the top and bottom positions in the Jiu-jitsu game with heart rate to investigate the recovery trend between each ...position using heart rate recovery (%). The subjects of this study were eight white belt men with more than one year of training experience in the adult division of the Jujitsu competition (from 19 to 29 years). Four teams, each consisting of two people, were selected and experimented by cross-allocation. The sparring was performed in three rounds of five minutes, assuming the competition and the rest time was applied the same as the sparring time. Each position's heart rate recovery rate (%) measurement was based on the heart rate level just before each round. The heart rate of thirty seconds, one, two, three, four, and five minutes immediately after each round (sparring) was measured and expressed in %. The results are as follows: First, the heart rate level immediately after sparring between positions showed a high heart rate level in the bottom position immediately after all rounds (sparring). Second, it was found that the bottom position performed exercise under higher physiological conditions than the top position, and the heart rate recovery tended to rapidly decrease in the bottom position at the same rest time. Third, resting heart rate appears to predict heart rate recovery.
Strangulation as a fight-finishing maneuver in combat sports, termed “choking” in that context, occurs worldwide millions of times yearly. This activity can be trained safely, but devastating ...injuries can occur.
Our aim was to present a case series of cervical artery dissections and ischemic strokes associated with sportive choking. Sharing these cases is meant to draw awareness, to assist emergency physicians in caring for these athletes, and to provide a platform for further research.
Institutional Review Board approval was obtained. Participants consented for medical information transfer and anonymous academic reproduction. The minimum medical record information necessary for inclusion was a report of diagnosis-confirming advanced imaging. Participants were contacted for primary information in addition to what the medical records could provide and to confirm some information in the record (e.g., pertinent medical history, demographic characteristics, choking event description, medical care, and commentary on their current health). Medical records and additional first-hand information were reviewed and participants were included if they had a diagnosed dissection or stroke likely associated with a sportive choke.
Ten cases met all criteria for inclusion. There were 5 cases of carotid artery dissection, 3 cases of vertebral artery dissection, and 2 cases of ischemic stroke without dissection. Nine of 10 participants survived and 3 of 10 have returned to submission grappling training.
Cervical artery dissections and ischemic strokes can occur in association with sportive choking. Emergency physicians must be aware of the widespread nature of this activity and must be vigilant in approaching management of patients with symptoms consistent with these injuries.
This article draws on ethnographic data from a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym to describe “social calibration” as ongoing interstitial work through which actors assess expectations of intensity and adjust ...their behaviors and dispositions accordingly. It explores two intensity breaches at the gym: “spazzing out” and not “being mean” enough. Using a microsociological lens, it analyses gym members' understandings of, and reactions to, these breaches. This study provides theoretical insight into micro‐interactional processes of social calibration used to negotiate and align intensity levels with prevailing norms, and shows how through these processes practitioners transgress or reinforce gendered expectations.
Functional disability and chronic knee pain are frequent in combats sports participants. The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is a system for specific function examination ...and intervention for spinal and extremity musculoskeletal disorder. This clinical trial aimed to investigate the effectiveness of MDT, through Directional Preference, for specific function disability in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners (BJJPs) experiencing chronic non-specific knee pain.
Sixty-five BJJPs with chronic non-specific knee pain were evaluated and classified according to the MDT system. Following classification, 28 BJJPs were randomized pairwise into intervention (IG) and control (CG) groups. The procedures were consistent with the principles of DP and the intervention period was 6 weeks and follow up was included. The primary outcome was specific functional disability evaluated using the Patient Specific Function Scale (PSFS) and the secondary outcomes were pain intensity and fear-avoidance in utilizing the symptomatic limb. Data were analyzed with a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and repeated measures for the outcome factor were performed (p < 0.05).
For the specific functional disability, ANOVA revealed significant differences between groups based on group interaction and treatment factors (F (2, 52): 162,015; p < 0.001; η2: 0.208). The BJJPs allocated to the IG achieved significant improvements in specific functional disability, a mean difference of −4.36 (−5.01 to −3.72) post-interventional and −4.80 (−6.07 to −3.53) follow-up in the PSFS. Improvements in pain intensity and fear-avoidance were also achieved post-intervention and follow-up.
Intervention in accordance with DP promoted resulted in favorable outcomes for clinical effects on specific functional disability pain intensity, and symmetry index of the lower limbs. These findings suggest that intervention based on DP may be effective in the management of chronic knee pain in BJJPs.
Background:
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a unique style of martial arts with rapid growth in the United States and internationally. Although studies have examined injuries in other martial arts and ...combat sports, to date, no published medical study has examined injuries in BJJ competitions.
Purpose:
(1) To estimate the incidence of injuries in BJJ competitions and (2) to identify and describe the types and mechanisms of injuries associated with competitive BJJ.
Study Design:
Descriptive epidemiology study.
Methods:
Injury data were obtained from records of on-site medical coverage at 8 statewide BJJ tournaments in Hawaii, USA, between 2005 and 2011.
Results:
The identified injury incidence on the day of matches was 9.2 per 1000 exposures (46 injuries out of 5022 exposures, ie, match participations). Orthopaedic injuries were the most common and accounted for 78% of all injuries (n = 36), followed by costochondral or rib injuries (n = 7) and lacerations requiring medical care (n = 3). The elbow was found to be the joint most commonly injured during BJJ competitions, with the arm bar being the most common mechanism. We propose that this BJJ-specific injury mechanism, the “arm bar,” be recognized as another mechanism of hyperextension injury to the elbow in sports.
Conclusion:
Comparison of the BJJ injury data with injury data reported for judo, taekwondo, wrestling, and mixed martial arts showed that BJJ competitors were at substantially lower risk of injury compared with these other sports. With orthopaedic injuries being most common and the elbow being the area most vulnerable to injury in BJJ, it is important that participants, referees, and physicians be properly educated about the unique mechanisms of injury that can occur, particularly to the elbow.
