This edited collection addresses climate change journalism from the perspective of temporality, showcasing how various time scales—from geology, meteorology, politics, journalism, and lived ...cultures—interact with journalism around the world.Analyzing the meetings of and schisms between various temporalities as they emerge from reporting on climate change globally, Climate Change and Journalism: Negotiating Rifts of Time asks how climate change as a temporal process gets inscribed within the temporalities of journalism. The overarching question of climate change journalism and its relationship to temporality is considered through the themes of environmental justice and slow violence, editorial interventions, ecological loss, and political and religious contexts, which are in turn explored through a selection of case studies from the US, France, Thailand, Brazil, Australia, Spain, Mexico, Canada, and the UK.This is an insightful resource for students and scholars in the fields of journalism, media studies, environmental communication, and communications generally.
Journalism has enjoyed a rich and relatively stable history of professionalization. Scholars coming from a variety of disciplines have theorized this history, forming a consistent body of knowledge ...codified in national and international handbooks and canonical readers. However, recent work and analysis suggest that the supposed core of journalism and the assumed consistency of the inner workings of news organizations are problematic starting points for journalism studies. In this article, we challenge the consensual (self-)presentation of journalism – in terms of its occupational ideology, its professional culture, and its sedimentation in routines and organizational structures (cf. the newsroom) in the context of its reconfiguration as a post-industrial, entrepreneurial, and atypical way of working and of being at work. We outline a way beyond individualist or institutional approaches to do justice to the current complex transformation of the profession. We propose a framework to bring together these approaches in a dialectic attempt to move through and beyond journalism as it has traditionally been conceptualized and practiced, allowing for a broader definition and understanding of the myriad of practices that make up journalism.
The year 1873 was one of financial crises. A boom in railway construction had spurred a bull market—but when the boom turned to bust, transatlantic panic quickly became a worldwide economic downturn. ...In Transatlantic Speculations, Hannah Catherine Davies offers a new lens on the panics of 1873 and nineteenth-century globalization by exploring the ways in which contemporaries experienced a tumultuous period that profoundly challenged notions of economic and moral order. Considering the crises of 1873 from the vantage points of Berlin, New York, and Vienna, Davies maps what she calls the dual "transatlantic speculations" of the 1870s: the financial speculation that led to these panics as well as the interpretative speculations that sprouted in their wake. Drawing on a wide variety of sources—including investment manuals, credit reports, business correspondence, newspapers, and legal treatises—she analyzes how investors were prompted to put their money into faraway enterprises, how journalists and bankers created and spread financial information and disinformation, how her subjects made and experienced financial flows, and how responses ranged from policy reform to anti-Semitic conspiracy theories when these flows suddenly were interrupted. Davies goes beyond national frames of analysis to explore international economic entanglement, using the panics' interconnectedness to shed light on contemporary notions of the world economy. Blending cultural, intellectual, and legal history, Transatlantic Speculations gives vital transnational and comparative perspective on a crucial moment for financial markets, globalization, and capitalism.

In the world of journalism and new age media, the essence of convergence is on and in constant use. As technology continues to make inroads into the field of journalism, it becomes rather ...quintessential to understand the impact of such technology on this profession. In this paper an attempt has been made to examine the emergence of process of convergence through various connecting technology driven processes, delineated in the form of a model. The model is based on premise that in today’s world of journalism, the process of ‘convergence and its effect’ is absolutely inevitable. This irrevocability of convergence in the profession of journalism or media needs to be understood taking into consideration the influence of the term ‘Digital-Clout’ – which basically involves media convergence, online medium impact, organizational set up and professional/job transformation. While Internet being central force in this clout; assumes vital role in this model. The paper proposes and elaborates this concept in the shape of model- Digital Clout - Convergence-Effect Model.
‘The Caragiale-World’: the all Times Media Between ‘Karkaleki’ and ‘Gogumano’ The study argues that the classic of the Romanian comedy, I. L. Caragiale (1852 - 1912), early anticipated right in the ...middle of the ‘La belle époque’ the impact of the future new e-media revolution. Especially in his journalistic articles, we can discover an inside criticism of corrupted media communication, as well as the principles of nowadays manipulations and fake news. The visionary work of Caragiale proves that the technological revolution is not necessary followed by spiritual development. The study and his title are focused on two Caragiale’s humoristic characters: the typical pseudo journalist Karkaleki (for the home news) and his colleague Gogumano (for international news). But those names also signify in a popular language: ‘rubbish mix’ and ‘stupidity’...
