Maurizio Peleggi's review of Herzfeld's work, "Subversive Archaism," provides an opportunity for further discussion. They both acknowledge that subversive archaism often fails as a coherent social ...movement and is instead a recognizable social tactic. However, Herzfeld argues that the subversive archaists I describe deserve extirpation, unlike the rightists Peleggi refers to. In his research, he experienced the oppressive hierarchy that silences many Thai bureaucrats, although there were exceptions who sympathized with the residents. These exceptions do not negate the connections between bourgeois values, a protestant understanding of karma, and middle-class antipathy towards poor provincial Thais. He highlights the political divergences between Greece and Thailand, where Greece is a democratic state and Thailand has unelected senators. While his work on Zoniana in Greece has been recognized, his moral commitment to Pom Mahakan in Thailand was not acknowledged. In conclusion, Peleggi's review sparks important discussions about subversive archaism and the politics of national heritage.
Sars Cov-2 has emerged as a global threat worldwide. At present, India is the second worsely-hit nation by COVID-19. Since it is a novel virus, there is no specific treatment strategy available at ...present. A mild symptomatic case of COVID-19 was managed through Ayurvedic intervention involving a personalized approach based on his Prakruti. He was prescribed Vamana Karma followed by Vyaghryadi Kashaya as an oral drug for fifteen days. The patient recovered well clinically, the disease progression to a more severe stage was not observed and the patient tested negative for COVID on the 17th day. In this report, the patient was of Kapha predominant Prakruti and his strength was good so he was prescribed Vamana Karma. Ayurveda advocates patient management by incorporating personal physical and mental attributes classified as Doshas. The promising results in the present case study indicate that a personalized approach involving Ayurveda in such cases can be helpful for a better prognosis.
The aircraft assembly system is highly complex involving different stakeholders from multiple domains. The design of such a system requires comprehensive consideration of various industrial scenarios ...aiming to optimize key performance indicators. Traditional design methods heavily rely on domain expert knowledge using documents to define assembly solutions which are later verified through simulations. However, these document-centric approaches cannot provide graphical notations for engineers to efficiently understand the entire assembly process. Moreover, it is difficult to analyze the performance of the designed assembly processes using simulations since the simulation models have to be developed based on the documents manually rather than be generated automatically from the design models. In this paper, a semantic-driven approach is proposed to support aircraft assembly process formalism and performance analysis. First, meta-models of aircraft assembly processes are developed based on SysML and discrete-event simulation models using a semantic modeling language named KARMA. Then an application ontology is defined for generating semantic models from KARMA architecture models to capture domain knowledge, system requirements and simulation model information of the aircraft assembly process. A model transformer is developed to transform the KARMA models to discrete-event simulation models based on the application ontology. Then the generated simulation models are executed to obtain the simulation results for verifying the designed assembly process. Finally, the obtained simulation results are used to support decision-making of selecting the optimal aircraft assembly process. A case study is conducted to verify the proposed method.
This ethnographic article focuses on the performance of Alce Lhamo (Sister Goddess) in Lithang, a Tibetan town on the western tip of Sichuan Province in China. It explores the linkages between local ...ways of residing in the world, the cosmological universe, and cosmopolitan centers. With an analysis of the two local Sister Goddess troupes and their competing claims to authority and authenticity, interactions with the local government, manipulation of state policies, and engagement with the global world, it sheds light on how people incorporate merit, karma, profit, power, the state, and the market in their vision of the good life, and how aspirations to the good life extend beyond the local and the social to include the cosmopolitan and cosmological scales.

According to the so-called golden rule, we ought to treat others as we want to be treated by them. This rule, in one form or another, is part of every major religion, and it has been accepted by many ...philosophers with various ethical views. However, if the literal golden rule is interpreted as an absolute rule, it is problematic. In this paper, I introduce a new version of this famous principle that is similar to various classical definitions. According to this variant, the rule can be formulated in the following way: If you want it to be the case that if
$x$
x
were in your situation and you were in
$x$
x
's situation then
$x$
x
would do
$H$
H
to you, and you have a good will, then you ought to do
$H$
H
to x. I show how this version can be derived from a small set of highly plausible premises, and I defend it against some of the most interesting and/or common objections against the golden rule in the literature. I conclude that we have good reason to believe in this rendition of the principle.
The Apaṇṇaka Sutta, one of the early recorded teachings of the Buddha, contains an argument for accepting the doctrines of karma and rebirth that Buddhist scholars claim anticipates Pascal's wager. I ...call this argument the Buddha's wager. Does it anticipate Pascal's wager and is it a good bet? Contemporary scholars identify at least four versions of Pascal's wager in his Pensées. This article demonstrates that the Buddha's wager anticipates two versions of Pascal's wager, but not its canonical form. Like Pascal's wager, the Buddha's wager presents a decision problem between two opposing theses in an epistemic context that lacks evidence of their truth or falsity. Like Pascal, the Buddha also tries to solve this problem using dominance, superdominance or 'superduperdominance' reasoning. The Apaṇṇaka Sutta likely provides the earliest textual example of such reasoning. While the Buddha's wager does not exhibit the expected utility reasoning of the best-known form of Pascal's wager, the article suggests a reformulation that parallels Alan Hájek's (2018) vector-value reformulation. Is it a good bet? This article argues that it is not if this means we are rationally required to accept its recommendation. This is because, while it avoids two of the major objections levelled against Pascal's wager, it succumbs to one and has at least two problems of its own.
Most critics focus on the pain and suffering of the first-generation Vietnamese immigrants depicted in Lan Cao’s Monkey Bridge. This paper explores how Cao strategically uses the philosophy of karma ...in Vietnamese Buddhism to provide a method for alleviating their suffering in this novel. It argues that she employs karma to investigate the origins of the adversity and trauma experienced by the first-generation Vietnamese immigrants, including the pro-American attitude of the early Vietnamese authorities during the Vietnam War, the imperialistic actions of the United States, and the resulting karmic consequences. In addition, they demonstrate, through actions like forming “hui”, a way to change their fate and heal their trauma for later generations of Vietnamese immigrants, emphasizing positive transformation of karma. This paper suggests that the Buddhist philosophy of karma provides an effective strategy for Vietnamese American immigrants to reflect on the Vietnam War, overcome adversity, and heal their own trauma.
When a task or goal is hard to think about or do, people can infer that it is a waste of their time (difficulty-as-impossibility) or valuable to them (difficulty-as-importance). Separate from chosen ...tasks and goals, life can present unchosen difficulties. Building on identity-based motivation theory, people can see these as opportunities for self-betterment (difficulty-as-improvement). People use this language when they recall or communicate about difficulties (autobiographical memories, Study 1; “Common Crawl” corpus, Study 2). Our difficulty mindset measures are culture-general (Australia, Canada, China, India, Iran, New Zealand, Turkey, the United States, Studies 3–15, N = 3,532). People in Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD)-er countries slightly agree with difficulty-as-improvement. Religious, spiritual, conservative people, believers in karma and a just world, and people from less-WEIRD countries score higher. People who endorse difficulty-as-importance see themselves as conscientious, virtuous, and leading lives of purpose. So do endorsers of difficulty-as-improvement—who also see themselves as optimists (all scores lower for difficulty-as-impossibility endorsers).
