The book is a group biography of the 175,000+ Latvians who fled their homeland during the final year of World War II (1944–45), lived until 1951 as refugees in Sweden and Germany, and then dispersed ...to other countries throughout the world.The post-1945 history of these Latvians includes a description of their lives in ‘displaced person’ camps in post-war Germany, dispersion in the 1949–1951 years, resettlement in new host countries in Europe and overseas, strategies of adaptation to the new circumstances, organizational efforts, acculturation and assimilation, measures of cultural and linguistic preservation, renewal of contacts with the old homeland, generational change and disagreements, political mobilization, changes in personal and group identity, and, after 1991, the inclusion by the Latvian government of the descendants of this post-war population into a formally designated ‘Latvian diaspora’ (Diaspora Law, 2019).

A collection of 141 bone and antler tools and debitage pieces recovered from the River Užava at the village of Sise constitutes the largest Mesolithic osseous assemblage in western Latvia. ...Radiocarbon dating of 12 pieces suggests that most of this collection dates from the 6
millennium calBC. We present a general analysis, highlighting typical and unique tool forms, ornamented and sculpted pieces, and assess the corpus in a wider geographical context.
Predominant in this rich and diverse collection are heavy duty antler tools: various forms of adzes, axes and hammers as well as sleeves, made either from shed antler or antler of hunted animals. They include two pieces classifiable as T-axes. Spear- and arrowheads as well as daggers are also present, along with chisels, wedges, awls and other tools. Artistic representations include five sculpted and engraved objects.
The heavy duty red deer antler tools have parallels in the region south of the Baltic Sea, whereas the bone projectile forms are familiar from Kunda and Narva Culture sites of the East Baltic; the closest similarity is with osseous assemblages from coastal western Lithuania.
DIE FORMIERUNG VON SPEZIFISCH MUNDARTLICHEN BEDEUTUNGEN DER PRÄFIXALEN VERBA IN NORDWESTLICHEN MUNDARTEN VON VIDZEMEZusammenfassungDie Formierung von spezifisch mundartlichen Bedeutungen der ...präfixalen Verba wird sowohl von allgemeinen Ursachen der Entwicklung und Veränderung der Wortbedeutungen, wie auch von mundartlichen Bedeutungseigentümlichkeiten der entsprechenden Wortbildungselementen verursacht. Die präfixalen Verba, die spezifisch mundartliche Bedeutungen haben, kann man – die Ursachen dieser Spezifik in Acht nehmend – in drei Gruppen einteilen:1) Verba, deren mundartliche Bedeutungen von mundartlichen Bedeutungseigentümlichkeiten des Präfixes verursacht sind, z. B., apliku kurpes ap skapi ‘habe die Schuhe unter Schrank gelegt’, apmêzis roĩdu apuž lâvu apužã ‘(er) hat das Kehricht unter Pritsche gekehrt’. In nordwestlichen Mundarten von Vidzeme hat das Präfix ap- in verbalen Zusammensetzungen eine mundartliche Bedeutung ‘unter etwas (z. B., unterlegen, unterschieben)’; präfixale Verba mit ap-, die eine solche Bedeutung haben, bilden eine bestimmte lexikalisch-semantische Gruppe;2) Verba, deren mundartliche Bedeutungen von mundartlichen Bedeutungseigentümlichkeiten des Stammverbums verursacht sind (die Bedeutungen von präfixalen Verba sind ja mit den Bedeutungen von Stammwörtern eng verbunden), z. B., gurt ‘sinken, einsinken’ (snieks i čagàne, kãjas gur̃st iekšã) und sagurt ‘zusammenfallen’ (gàn jàu sagur̃s sẽnes / vãroties/);3) Verba, deren mundartliche Bedeutungen als Resultat der Bedeutungsentwicklung des Derivates zu betrachten sind. Diese Entwicklung steht im Zusammenhang mit allgemeinen Ursachen von semantischen Veränderungsprozessen (Bedeutungsübertragungen und -erweiterungen, Konkretisierung, Analogie u. s. w.), z. B., aizbilst ‘verwünschen’.

Endzelīna Latvijas PSR vietvārdos (I 1956., II 1961.), tā nepublicētie (III sējuma manuskriptā un Latvijas PSR Zinātņu akadēmijas Valodas un literatūras institūta kartotēkā), lai meklētu atbilstību senprūšu valodai.Toponīmu un hidronīmu, kur vērojama drošāka vai nedrošāka atbilstība, ir daudz – aptuveni 20–25%. Tie dalāmi 2 pamatgrupās: 1) kam pamatā latviešu literārās valodas apellatīvi un adjektīvi ((Acis, Saule, Lab- u. с). 2) kam pamatā nevar saskatīt parastos latviešu literārās valodas apellatīvus, adjektīvus u. c, bet kur vērojama lielāka vai mazāka atbilstība senprūšu valodai (reizēm arī latviešu valodas apvidvārdiem). Atklājas 3 atbilstību grupas.I. Fonētiskā: ei ie vietā (Preikuŗi); rakstos b mija ar v (Lywa : Lība); kursiskajā teritorijā ķ, ģ gaidāmā c, dz vietā (Ķeķeris, Ģērveļi u. tml).II. Leksiskā:a) apellatīvi (bieži arī toponīmi) 6 apakšgrupās (Abza, Brātiņi, Rapa, Angeri, Gar̃bas, Apāni u.d.c);b) adjektīvi, prepozīcijas (Cę̂rsna2, Cêrsupji2 u.c);c) toponīmi (Aũce, Kārsava u.c.);d) etnonīmi un novadu vārdi (Prūši, Sęm̃ba u.c.);e) antroponīmi (Asûne, Laũstiķi u.c);III. Semantiskā: kaut atbilstoši apellatīvi ir latviešu literārajā valodā, tomēr reizēm piemērotākas liekas senprūšu valodas nozīmes (piem., s. v. gaĩda, staba- u. c).Ja būtu zināms pilnīgāks senprūšu valodas vārdu krājums, atbilstošās toponīmijas procents būtu vēl augstāks.
