Die Förderung des Drucks durch die Freie und Hansestadt wurde jedoch in der Bürgerschaft aus der SPD attackiert - offenbar vor allem des Themas wegen, denn Schiemann war eben ein nationalistischer Historiker und seine Korrespondenz mit dem Kaiser gab auch Gelegenheit, die Dolchstosslegende zu wiederholen (Zitat S. 318).

Ironically, before running for president, David had run for Congress from Lower Manhattan as a candidate of the Peace and Freedom Party in 1968 - when the Party's presidential candidate was the ...notoriously homophobic Eldridge Cleaver of the Black Panther Party. The exact opposite happened, as many "Shachtmanites" - who became the dominant faction in the SP - soon expressed support ("critically," of course) for the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Lyndon Johnson administration, and the Vietnam War. (Tragically, Bayard Rustin joined this faction, abandoning his socialist pacifism.) David also believed that the orthodox Trotskyists of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) played a "splitter" role in the anti-Vietnam War movement.

A common theme that runs through all of von Trotta's films the close relationships that women form with each other, despite the complexities and problems the relationship entails. These relationships ...are often between two women who are in some sense opposites. In MARIANNE and JULIANE, the two women are sisters whose lives have taken very different paths. The film tells of their struggle to come to terms with their political differences while coping with their respective political and personal commitments. An added dimension to the film that directly addresses the intertwining of the political with the personal is the historical context. The two sisters have spent their childhood in Nazi Germany during World War II and their adult lives in the turbulent years of 1970's postwar Germany. In fact, the character of Marianne is based on the life of Gudrun Ensslin, a member of the Bader Meinhof revolutionary group. Juliane, from whose perspective the story is told, is based on Ensslin's sister Christiane, to whom von Margarethe von Trotta dedicates her film. The issue of commitment also arises over Marianne's six-year-old son, Jan. Early in the film, the boy's father brings Jan to Juliane and asks her to care for the child. Juliane refuses. She has made the decision to focus her work, foregoing marriage and children. When Jan's father commits suicide while Marianne is in prison, Juliane decides to place the boy in a foster home. However, after Marianne's death, Jan is the victim of a vicious act by the other children at the home, and Juliane decides to bring Jan home to live with her. In an extremely ambivalent resolution, the film shows Juliane forced into the position she had originally rejected. She has responsibility for Marianne's psychologically and physically damaged child. As the films ends, an angry Jan tears up his mother's picture, faces Juliane and demands to know "everything" about the mother he can't remember. "Begin! Begin!" he commands.
With "State of Control," Thomas Kilpper has created a labor-intensive intervention in one of the headquarters' buildings - long abandoned and now up for sale - witbi an extensive series of linocuts ...meticulously etched into the original linoleum floor and then utilized to make massive prints exhibited on an upper floor and hung from the building's facade.
...after 30 years, an important faction of the leaders of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), the one headed by Arabinda Rajkhowa, the organisation's chairman, now out of prison on bail, ...initiated talks with the government on 10 February, in effect dropping the question of the sovereignty of the people of Assam from the agenda. Operation Bajrang and Operation Rhino led to atrocities in Assam's countryside, including murder by the army and/or the paramilitary forces backed by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, which, in effect, did away with the rule of law to allow the killing of suspects without fear of prosecution. The dominance of non-Assamese mercantile capital in the stagnant economy even as large sections of local youth remained unemployed, the administrative, political and military supremacy of New Delhi, and a sense of helplessness at not being able to redress the situation sowed the seeds of frustration and alienation, and, in turn, led to the germination of national aspirations.
