Regional centers of post-transitional societies are becoming increasingly involved in global competition between cities and regions, while at the same time experiencing setbacks in development, ...caused by the centralization of decision-making and development in State capitals. In the case of Slovenia, all of this is linked to the reform of local government, the poor execution of which has allowed regional political and economic elites to establish and uphold intransparent, often kleptocrat connections. Our case study analyzes the failed city branding strategies of the City Municipality of Maribor, which have contributed to yet another collapse of the city and its surrounding region, and triggered the Maribor uprising. Our conclusion offers an alternative approach to conceiving of a new urban story, focusing on local and regional stakeholders. Adapted from the source document.
Kyanite-rich and quartz-rich eclogites occur as lenses within amphibolite-facies quartzo-feldspathic gneisses in the Pohorje Mountains, Northern Slovenia, that form the easternmost Austroalpine ...basement. Major and trace elements indicate that the kyanite-rich eclogites were derived from plagioclase-rich gabbroic cumulates, whereas the quartz-rich eclogites represent more fractionated basaltic compositions. Both varieties are characterized by a LREE-depleted N-MORB type REE signature. Geothermobarometry and
P–
T pseudosections indicate that eclogites equilibrated at 1.8–2.5 GPa and 630–700 °C, consistently with the lack of coesite and with equilibration conditions of the chemically similar eclogites from the adjacent basement units at Koralpe and Saualpe type localities. Decompression reaction textures include (i) clinopyroxene–plagioclase intergrowths after omphacite, (ii) replacement of kyanite by corundum–plagioclase–spinel±sapphirine symplectites, (iii) breakdown of phengite to biotite–plagioclase sapphirine symplectites. The results of this study indicate that Koralpe, Saualpe and Pohorje high-pressure rocks represent former MORB-type oceanic crust that was subducted in the course of the late Cretaceous (approximately 100 Ma ago) collision between the European and the Apulian plates.
This article seeks to identify who in Slovenia remains digitally offline and how such a status relates to socio-demographic factors (e.g. gender, age and education), class and cultural capital. The ...author assumes that the absence of new technology should be addressed in relation to existing patterns of cultural consumption and media preferences, and she attempts to understand the problem of digital exclusion within the context of other types of structural inequalities. Since digital technology is understood not just as a technical tool but as a social phenomenon directly related to everyday practices, the individual’s class position and cultural capital, digital exclusion is not viewed simply as a narrow problem of access. Instead of looking at the binary gap between technology haves and have-nots, the author takes the multilevel structure of digital access into account. The findings of a quantitative survey involving a representative sample of 820 residents in the two biggest Slovenian cities—Ljubljana and Maribor—show that, first, three types of digital exclusion exist: digitally unmotivated with high cultural capital; overall excluded with weak cultural capital; and digitally self-excluded with moderate cultural capital. Second, the study suggests that all three digital exclusion groups are, more than by class, divided by cultural engagement and media taste, which provides important possibilities for future research.
The series features monographs and edited volumes on the topics of lexicography and meta-lexicography. Works from the broader domain of lexicology are also included if they strengthen the ...theoretical, methodological and empirical basis of lexicography and meta-lexicography. The volumes focus on aspects of lexicography such as micro- and macrostructure, typology, history of the discipline, and application-oriented lexicographical documentation.
One hundred and fifty years ago (May 12, 1872) Anton Korošec, a leading figure of the Slovene political life between two world wars, was born at Biserjane near Sv. Jurij ob Ščavnici. He was a priest ...of the Lavant (Maribor) Diocese. He exercised priestly duties only at the beginning of his public activities, but the fact that he was a priest was a significant feature of his whole life and marked both his political career and his place in the Slovene historiography. As the leader of the strongest Slovene political party, he was supported by the majority of his fellow priests. He was considered as the Slovene national leader and a thorn in the flesh of the centralist and unitarian parties. He got in occasional conflicts with the bishops, and the Pope's representative in Belgrade was also not in his favor.
In the 1860s, the medical societies in Habsburg Monarchy, undertook a part of the medical postgraduate training. Doctors and wound surgeons from Ljubljana established medical association in October ...1861 («Ärztlicher Leseverein in Laibach»). At a meeting in October 1862 they decided to include all the doctors and wound surgeons from the Carniola region. Following the organization was renamed Medical Association in Carniola («Verein der Ärzte in Krain»). A similar provincial association was founded by the Styrian doctors in Graz as early as in May 1862 («Verein der Ärzte in Steiermark»). Similar medical associations were also established in the Lower Styria in the 1870s. The most important medical association was established in Maribor in 1876. Another medical association was established in Celje in 1877 and one in the Ptuj-Ljutomer region in 1877. As the associations were mostly communicating in German, this might have been the reason for the establishment of the Slovene medical society in Celje in 1906. The Slovenian national consciousness began to strengthen across the territory of today's Slovenia. Already after the First World War in 1918, they managed to achieve the establishment of the Slovene Medical Society. Due to the events during the Second World War, a uniform Slovene medical association was established in 1947.
