Each piece is characterized by its own traditions and artistic forms. The earliest pieces date from the beginning of the first millennium, the most recent form the early 20th century. Unique and rare examples are documented, many virtually unknown.
"In spite of a historical near absence of masking practice among the Tiv people of Nigeria, since 1960 the use of carved wooden masks and figures has found new and fertile expression in their ...contemporary puppet and masquerade theater called kwagh-hir." (AFRICAN ARTS) The author discusses "the extent to which the personal identity of the mask wearer is disguised and redefined during and subsequent to a performance. In kwagh-hir the dual possibilities of concealing and revealing are utilized to the advantage of the performer without ever compromising the supernatural aspect of the masked figure."

Nyau dancers represent the spirits of the animals and the ancestors returning from the spirit world to seek a temporary reconciliation with human beings in the village. Gule Wamkulu ('The Big Dance') is used to present the symbolic spirit world. Nyau is also practiced by Malawian migrants in Zimbabwe, where it is regarded with suspicion.
