"Spaniards in Mauthausen is the first study of the cultural legacy of Spaniards imprisoned and killed during the Second World War in the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen. By examining narratives ...about Spanish Mauthausen victims over the past seventy years, author Sara J. Brenneis provides a historical, critical, and chronological analysis of a virtually unknown body of work"--
"Diverse accounts from survivors of Mauthausen, chronicled in letters, artwork, photographs, memoirs, fiction, film, theater, and new media, illustrate how Spaniards have become cognizant of the Spanish government's relationship to the Nazis and its role in the victimization of Spanish nationals in Mauthausen. As political prisoners, their numbers and experiences differ significantly from the millions of Jews exterminated by Hitler, yet the Spaniards in Mauthausen were nevertheless objects of Nazi violence and witnesses to the Holocaust."
This book is rooted in the author’s experience as an interviewer and researcher in the Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project – the biggest European oral history project devoted to a single Nazi ...concentration camp system, realized in the years 2002/2003 at the University of Vienna. Over 850 Mauthausen survivors have been recorded worldwide, more than 160 of them in Poland, and over 30 by the author. The work offers an in-depth analysis of Polish survivors’ accounts, sensitive to both, form and content of these stories, as well as their social and cultural framing. The analysis is accompanied by an interpretation of (Polish) camp experiences in a broader biographical and historical perspective. The book is an interpretive journey from camp experiences, through the survivors’ memories, to narratives recalling them − and backwards.
The experience of Spaniards deported to Nazi camps has traditionally occupied a secondary position in historiography. Available evidence, however, indicates that the Spanish case evinced a uniqueness ...that has not yet been fully studied. This article proposes a transversal analysis by means of which to study the significance of the Spanish group deported to the Austrian camp of Mauthausen, measuring the degree to which they were integrated within the concentration camp hierarchy, the number of privileged positions occupied within the camp and their evolution over time. Similarly, the article explores the exceptional case of the Ebensee satellite camp, where the group of Spanish prisoners suffered an unusually low death rate.
The aims of the present paper is to analyse the specific visual regime of some never-before-exhibited photographs displayed at the photographic exhibition organised for the 60th anniversary of the ...Liberation of Mauthausen camp in 2005. I will proceed accordingly to a three steps process. First of all, I will try to show how photographs can be considered as a form of writing, namely a “light writing”. I will then provide a general overview of the catalogue of the exhibition but through a decomposition and reassembly of the photographic images, trying to work for a decentralization of the gaze beyond the documentary value of these photographs. Finally, I will draw some conclusions, proposing further reflections on photography as “trace” and “supplement” of the visible.
The Nuremberg trials are regarded as models of postwar justice, but the Mauthausen trial was the norm and reveals the troubling face of American military proceedings. This rough justice, with its lax ...rules of evidence and questionable interrogations, compromised legal standards in order to guarantee that guilty people did not walk free.

"Europe in Mauthausen" presents a comprehensive history of the survivors of a Nazi concentration camp and is based on a unique collection of 859 oral and video history interviews with former ...concentration camp prisoners in Europe, Israel, North and South America. This first volume focuses on methodological considerations and macro-political contexts. It shows that the National Socialist camp system was not only depending on Nazi persecution policies, but also to a large extent on the forms of occupation and collaboration in the occupied countries.

The second volume examines how prisoners from numerous European countries were brought to the Mauthausen concentration camp complex. The deportations, the transfers of prisoners within the Nazi camp system and the death marches led to constant changes in the camp society; despite the omnipresence of violent death; thus, the fates of the inmates differed considerably.
