Economic inequality continues to contribute to political and social instability around the world. This instability stifles development and results in widening the wealth gap between the "haves" and ..."have nots, " further eroding stability. It has been argued that entrepreneurship is a prime contributor to this vicious cycle. Using Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation to Mitigate Wealth Inequality contends that this is only true when the opportunity for entrepreneurship is limited to a few. The authors maintain that when entrepreneurship is open to anyone who is properly motivated, innovative, and has a goal of growth for their enterprise, it helps build wealth for a greater number of people. The concept of "social entrepreneurship" is introduced, where entrepreneurship becomes a vehicle for explicitly addressing community-based economic and social challenges using markets. The book uses examples of entrepreneurial projects and programs that have attempted to address inequality to discuss entrepreneurship as an economic development strategy and its role in addressing the challenges of economic inequality. Ergot is a fungal disease that occurs on cereals and grasses, including rye, oat, wheat, and barley. The ergot pathogen, Claviceps purpurea, infects the floret, and as infection progresses, it ...replaces individual kernels, appearing on the head as darkly coloured fungal bodies called sclerotia. Ergot is a grain-grading factor in Canada and can affect grain quality and value, as well as safety due to production of ergot alkaloids. Testing of durum fortified with ergot sclerotia showed that the presence of sclerotia resulted in black specks in semolina and pasta, but had no impact on milling performance or end-product quality. Surveillance performed as part of the Canadian Grain Commission's annual Harvest Sample and Cargo Monitoring Programs provided insights into ergot incidence and severity in different grains, growing locations, and years, as well as the presence of ergot alkaloids. Analysis of more than 230 000 Harvest Sample Program grain samples from western Canada across 25 years showed the highest ergot incidence and severity occurred in rye, followed by bread and durum wheat, and then barley and oats. Ergot incidence and severity varied annually, but only incidence increased over time. Analyses of bulk grain shipments indicated that the presence of ergot alkaloids reflected the disease incidence observed in the harvest samples (median ergot alkaloid concentrations in wheat and durum > oats and barley). Data on ergot alkaloids from the Cargo Monitoring Program also showed that the Canadian bulk grain-handling system mitigated the variability in annual ergot incidence and severity observed in harvest samples.

Despite the vast expansion of global markets during the last half of the twentieth century, social science still most often examines and measures inequality and social mobility within individual ...nations rather than across national boundaries. Every country has both rich and poor populations making demands—via institutions, political processes, or even conflict—on how their resources will be distributed. But shifts in inequality in one country can precipitate accompanying shifts in another. Inequality is best understood as a complex set of relational interactions that unfold globally over time. So the same institutional mechanisms that have historically reduced inequality within some nations have also often accentuated the selective exclusion of populations from poorer countries and enhanced high inequality equilibrium between nations. National identity and citizenship are the fundamental contemporary bases of stratification and inequality in the world, the authors conclude. Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) were recorded in Isfjorden, Svalbard (78 degree 15' N, 15 degree 11' E) in late September 2013. This record is the northernmost known occurrence of mackerel in ...the Arctic and represents a possible northward expansion (of ca. 5 degree latitude) of its distributional range. The examined specimens of mackerel were between 7 and 11 years old, with a mean size of 39 cm and a mean weight of 0.5 kg. Examination of stomach contents indicated that the mackerel were feeding mainly on juvenile herring (Clupea harengus). The occurrence of mackerel in the Arctic is discussed in relation to the recent increase in mackerel population size in the North Atlantic and the expansion of other North Atlantic fishes into the Svalbard region during the last decade. Using a decadal record of water temperature, we conclude that the occurrence of Atlantic mackerel in Svalbard waters is a result of a continued warming of the ocean in the region and that it follows a general trend of species' extending their distributional ranges northward into the Arctic.

Engstrom offers a historical perspective on the effects of gerrymandering on elections and party control of the U.S. national legislature. Aside from the requirements that districts be continuous and, after 1842, that each select only one representative, there were few restrictions on congressional districting. Unrestrained, state legislators drew and redrew districts to suit their own partisan agendas. With the rise of the "one-person, one-vote" doctrine and the implementation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, however, redistricting became subject to court oversight.Engstrom evaluates the abundant cross-sectional and temporal variation in redistricting plans and their electoral results from all the states, from 1789 through the 1960s, to identify the causes and consequences of partisan redistricting.
