In this study on the well known novel by Cercas, I will highlight several aspects related to postmodernity, at the same time my reading of the text will show its importance for the ethics of memory. ...By reporting an act of salvation, the narrator saves the memory of the agent of this act and of those who fought against Franco. At the same time, combining the collective episodes of the war with many of his private life in a metanarrative way, the narrator manages successfully to create and maintain a feasible and forceful novel.
One distinctive feature of Soldados de Salamina is the frequent intercalation of shots of archival (or apparently archival) material, in black and white, and of re-enactment scenes, usually in ...greenish tones. Another is the multiplicity of framing effects in the main action, involving still photographs, static and moving images on screens, and observed images and reflections. The interpolations always bring the past into contact with the present, while the framing effects draw from both past and present. Through her investigations, the protagonist Lola undergoes a gradual psychological transformation. All the intercalations and framing effects are marshalled around her, and drive this change, document it, and bring out its implications. Ultimately, Lola's experiences and discoveries have a clear bearing on the situation of the post-Transition generation in Spain, and her efforts to negotiate past and present and Nationalist and Republican legacies point a way forward beyond reductive understanding and attitudes.
Por ejemplo, el director de Belle Époque, Fernando Trueba, hermano del director de Soldados de Salamina, afirmó: I'm not crazy about period movies, but sometimes I like to escape from the present.

One of the key components of Javier Cercas’s novel
Soldados de Salamina
(
2001
) is its unreliable narrator, whose name is also Javier Cercas. This article proposes that we need to take a closer look ...at the psychology of this character as it is delineated in the text, not only because he turns out to be a more complex individual than is usually recognized, but also because his particular psychology has a significant bearing on the nature of his narratorial unreliability and how it manifests itself. Several categories of personality traits are identified: self-deprecating; libidinous/indiscreet; opinionated; superior; punctilious; over-precise; and error-prone, and then each is illustrated and analyzed in turn. Having established this psychological profile, of an idiosyncratic, quirky, and inconsistent individual with several internally contradictory features, we can contrast it with the various pronouncements made by the real Cercas about his fictional self, determine how these traits interact with the notion of the “relato real” favored by the narrator, and appreciate how, ultimately, this profile contributes substantially to the sense of contingency and undecidability that permeate the novel.
