This study focuses on determining the effects of demographic, socioeconomic and migration network factors on illegal migration from north Africa to south Europe using logistic regression model. The ...results indicated that migrants who thought it is easier to find a job in destination countries, had job before migration, had high level of financial situation before migration and had high level of education were more likely to migrate legally. However, migrants who had children before migration and migrated with others were more likely to migrate illegally. These findings can be useful for migration legislations in both sending and receiving countries.
The primary objective of this article is to identify, given Internet accessibility, the factors that shape the decisions of individuals for personal Internet usage and its extent. Cross-sectional ...data from the European Social Survey database were utilized and an ordered probit model with selectivity was employed. The hypothesized link between the decision to use the Internet and the extent of usage was confirmed by the data. Household income, cost of access, demographics, media use, regional characteristics and general skill acquisition by individuals appear to correlate with Internet use and the extent of usage. In addition, a non-linear decomposition analysis was applied in order to identify the causes of the observed south/north divide. The results indicate that the observed differences in the probability of Internet use constitute a structural problem.
Our article examines the position of middle-classes in the social reproduction of southern European (SE) political economies in light of the sovereign debt crisis. The first part analyzes the rise of ...SE middle-classes in the 1980s and 1990s. The second part discusses the transformation of SE political economies after their entry in the European Monetary Union. The third part explores how the austerity measures adopted as a response to the sovereign debt crisis contributed to the further undermining of SE middleclasses' income and employment security. We discuss how the new European economic governance challenges the politico-economic foundations of SE political economies by transforming them into de-facto "consolidation states" (Streeck 2013).
This article provides the framework for some case studies on the dynamics of Europeanisation in South European political economies. It summarises the key features of the common template each case ...study adopts. Following a discussion on political economy as it is conceptualised in this volume titled ''Europeanisation and the southern periphery' in retrospect: another decade of dynamism, asymmetry, and fragmentation? Guest Editors: Canan Balkir, H. Tolga Bolukbasi and Ebru Ertugal', the article elaborates the defining attributes of the Europeanisation research programme by focusing on its theoretical core, research design and method of conceptualising and operationalising domestic continuity and change centring on the troika of 'ideas', 'interests' and 'institutions' in unpacking the dynamics therein. It concludes by providing a summary of the contributions to this volume.
Obesity is an epidemic phenomenon in both developed and developing societies. In the majority of South European countries, obesity prevalence is high among children and adolescents while, in adults, ...epidemic proportions are found in Greece, Portugal and the Southern areas of Spain and Italy, with particular prevalence of abdominal obesity. Secular trends also show increasing rates during the last 20 years mostly among young children and among males in adulthood. In some countries such as Spain and Greece, nutrition transition contributed largely to the increase of obesity prevalence. Other particular predisposing factors are sedentary behaviours, variations of socio-economic status and probably the warm climate. Genetic factors could also play a role. Preventive and treatment strategies are urgently needed to stop the obesity epidemic in children of Southern European countries.
Issue Title: Integrated Assessment of Running Waters in Europe The purpose of this study was to test the applicability of different methods of river habitat assessment and their respective indices in ...a series of sample sites in Italy. These investigations were carried out within the EU AQEM project with the aim of combining the macroinvertebrate information with that achieved by investigating the hydromorphological characteristics of the river ecosystem as well as the surrounding landscape features. The River Habitat Survey (including the derived indices Habitat Modification Score and Habitat Quality Assessment) from U.K., and three Italian indices (Index of Fluvial Functioning, Buffer Strip Index and Wild State Index) were applied at 33 AQEM sites distributed in three different Italian river types. The obtained results indicate the overall ability of the applied indices to detect the degradation gradient, including river morphology and habitat, in the studied riverine ecosystems. Index of Fluvial Functioning seems useful to promptly describe the ecological quality of rivers as suggested by the good correlation with the AQEM multimetric biotic index. The Buffer Strip Index, showing a clear affinity with the Habitat Quality Assessment, seems suitable to assess richness and quality of the physical structure of a riverine site. The Habitat Modification Score recorded efficiently the morphological impact where present (e.g., North Apennine river sites), while the Italian indices appear to be not appropriate for differentiating this impact type from the general degradation of rivers.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
This paper aims to investigate and analyse the impact of the dowry and the endowment system on marriage and household patterns and on the labour market in 18th century Turin. At the same time it ...enquires into the reliability of the northern/southern Europe pattern for the study of this topic. Two points are developed. Firstly the paper shows that the dowry system coexists with a relatively high age at marriage because of the specific role played by the dowry in Turin society. Indeed, this was not a once-and-for-all established asset but was a negotiable and flexible resource that could be manipulated by the different actors concerned in the endowment. Moreover, the payment did not always take place immediately upon marriage, nor was the money quickly available. At the same time the paper examines the economic role of dowry in
Ancien Régime households: by means of a juridical procedure couples could alienate this property, and use or invest it to ensure their well-being and/or their economic situation. Finally, the second part investigates the relationship between the dowry system and the participation of young girls and married women in the local labour market: their significant and crucial presence demonstrates that the dowry and its expectation was not a sufficient incentive to keep them out of the labour market.
The history of landowners and colonialism that runs through the veins of south Europe gives the basis for recovering experiences that consider body and collectivized landownership as the primary means of resistance in the cases of Aivados and Somonte in the south of Portugal and Andalucía. The historical and present domination of the body is reinterpreted as an archeologization of the imposition of the body-machine transformations, in view of which there appear bodies-rebellious transformations facing the law, for the life. The portrayed experiences are part of emerging projects of common goods recovery.
East and South European countries are going through a process of intensive changes and ICT plays an important role in supporting these changes. Most of the East and South European countries have a ...tradition of high quality education, in particular in natural and traditional technical sciences and thus have a good potential to take the new challenges. Today there is a strong need for advances and excellence in Software Engineering education and research, which are crucial for effective development of software industry in the region.
