In Avala Is Falling , Jovanović's breakout success in 1978,
a young woman challenges the expectations that teachers, parents,
bus drivers and doctors have for her. The "Avala" of the title
refers to ...a mountain south of Belgrade which is home to some of
Serbia's most important nationalist monuments and shrines; it is
also the site of the main mental hospital for the region, and its
"falling" is the unexpected fulfillment of a prophecy from a
traditional Serbian folk song. Jovanović's use of stream of
consciousness in her characters' thinking and speaking, as well as
intertextuality in description and plot advancement heralded the
arrival of an innovative new writer who was determined to break
with the of traditional concerns of earlier women writers. This
book is now recognized as much more than "jeans prose," although
the fame the book achieved under that characterization eventually
pushed it to cult status. Jovanović is now considered a major
avant-garde writer, whose stylistic innovations were as challenging
as her women-centered themes.

ABSTRACT
This article approaches the idea of eternity ethnographically. Specifically it turns to post‐Yugoslav central Serbia and the version of eternity (večnost) evoked by practicing Orthodox ...Christians in their daily lives. In this context, the eternal does not imply the everlastingness of persons and things in this life, or an inevitable cyclical “return.” Rather, eternity constitutes a dimension outside of time that sits alongside the present, a dimension that can be inhabited by ancestors and departed kin. In evoking eternity, people throw temporal life into relief, find solace in the face of death, and engage in the national community those no longer physically present. Against an essentializing view of the eternal as repetition or stasis, the article speculates about how evoking eternity is socially and politically generative, imbuing life with increased imaginative possibilities.
АПСТРАКТ
Овај чланак приступа идеји вечности са етнографске тачке гледишта. To се осврће на верзију вечности (eternity) евоцирану од стране православних хришћанских верника у свакодневном животу, а на територији централне Србије, у пост‐југословенском периоду. У овом контексту, вечност се не односи на трајанје особа и ствари у овом животу, или на неизбежни циклични повратак. Вечност је пре димензија ван времена која постоји поред садашњости, димензија која може бити настањена прецима или почившим ближњима. Евоцирајући вечност, људи истичу привремени овоземаљски живот, налазећи утеху у суочавању са смрћу и тако повезују са заједницом оне који више нису физички присутни. Противно виђењу вечности – као нечему што је понављање или застој – овај чланак посматра социјални и политички потенцијал евоцирања вечности, као прожимање живота појачаним маштовитим могућностима.
APSTRAKT
Ovaj članak pristupa ideji večnosti sa etnografske tačke gledišta. To se osvrće na verziju večnosti (eternity) evociranu od strane pravoslavnih hrišćanskih vernika u svakodnevnom životu, a na teritoriji centralne Srbije, u post‐jugoslovenskom periodu. U ovom kontekstu, večnost se ne odnosi na trajanje osoba i stvari u ovom životu, ili na neizbežni ciklični povratak. Večnost je pre dimenzija van vremena koja postoji pored sadašnjosti, dimenzija koja može biti nastanjena precima ili počivšim bližnjima. Evocirajuci večnost, ljudi ističu privremeni ovozemaljski život, nalazeci utehu u suočavanju sa smrću i tako povezuju sa zajednicom one koji više nisu fizički prisutni. Protivno videnju večnosti ‐kao nečemu što je ponavljanje ili zastoj ‐ovaj članak posmatra socijalni i politički potencijal evociranja večnosti, kao prožimanje života pojačanim maštovitim mogučnostima.
Avtorice se v skladu s sodobno mestno politiko, katere cilj je oblikovati konkurenčno mestno identiteto, v članku ukvarjajo s postsocialistično identiteto Novega Pazarja, srednje velikega mesta na ...jugozahodu Srbije. Proučujejo oblikovanje mestne identitete na podlagi dinamične interakcije med akterji in družbeno-prostorskimi strukturami, pri čemer uporabljajo pojem mestnega habitusa, ki temelji na Bourdieujevi teoriji o habitusu, in Lefebvrov koncept družbene produkcije prostora. Posebno pozornost namenjajo izzivom, s katerimi se postsocialistična mesta spopadajo pri ponovnem vzpostavljanju svoje identitete po obdobju spodbujanja modela socialističnega (industrijskega) mesta in njegovem poznejšem zatonu. Njihova analiza temelji na anketi med prebivalci Novega Pazarja (n = 299), intervjujih s strokovnjaki, zaposlenimi v mestni upravi ter drugih lokalnih ustanovah in organizacijah (n = 14), in na vsebinski analizi uradnega spletišča mesta. Njihovi izsledki kažejo, da je Novi Pazar mesto z močno identiteto, a tudi precejšnjimi strukturnimi omejitvami, ki onemogočajo lokalno delovanje, na podlagi katerega bi lahko mesto izkoristilo svoj potencial za oblikovanje konkurenčne identitete.
This paper aims to present the advantages of a qualitative approach in migration studies. Regardless of its proven validity, the qualitative perspective is still underutilised and remains ...overshadowed by research inspired by (neo)positivist, quantitative and statistical methods in migration studies. The paper seeks to prove the hypothesis that qualitative research, and the biographical method in particular, enables research on migration in its processuality, provides insight into the interconnection between the structure and the agency in all migration phases, and shines a light on power relations that produce unequal outcomes of these movements. The significance and reach of qualitative approaches have been demonstrated through the analysis of particular methodology solutions and the findings obtained by the research on the contemporary international migration of women from Serbia in the European context. The first section of the paper is a comprehensive overview of the application of theoretical and methodological approaches in migration studies, followed by an elaborate description of individual methodological procedures as well as relevant findings of the mentioned research. The main contribution of this paper is that it shows how qualitative research enables the re-examination and deconstruction of categories within which we are used to observing migrants and which actually represent a reflection of the administrative management of international movements.
Cilj ovog rada jeste da čitaocu predstavi prednosti izučavanja migracija iz kvalitativne perspektive, koja je i pored svoje dokazane valjanosti i dalje podzastupljena i u senci istraživanja inspirisanih (neo)pozitivističkim, kvantitativnim i statističkim metodama u migracionim studijama. U radu se tvrdi da kvalitativna, a naročito biografska istraživanja, omogućavaju da se migracije istraže u svojoj procesualnosti, da se ispita odnos međusobne povezanosti strukture i agensnosti u svim migracionim fazama i da se prepoznaju odnosi moći koji utiču na nejednake ishode ovih kretanja. Važnost i dometi kvalitativnih pristupa prikazani su kroz analizu konkretnih metodoloških rešenja i nalaze dobijene u okviru istraživanja koje se bavi fenomenom savremenih međunarodnih migracija žena iz Srbije u evropskom kontekstu. U prvom delu rada dat je pregledni prikaz primene teorijskih i metodoloških pristupa u studijama o migracijama, da bi zatim detaljno bili opisani konkretni metodološki postupci i relevantni nalazi iz spomenutog istraživanja. Glavni doprinos ovog rada jeste da pokaže na koji način se pomoću kvalitativnih istraživanja preispituju i dekonstruišu kategorije u okviru kojih smo navikli da posmatramo migrante, a koje zapravo predstavljaju odraz administrativnog upravljanja međunarodnih kretanja.
