As we entered the last decade of our first century (Gamma Theta Upsilon was founded in 1928), earlier this year I began to think more and more about our numbers. As the GTU Executive Secretary, I see ...our numbers on a daily basis and, since I've always liked to play around with numbers, I started fiddling with our membership data. Lately I have been keeping our President, Dr. Suzy Ziegler, updated on our total membership as we inch closer and closer to 70,000 members (as of the day of writing this we have 69,695 members), but I have also been keeping a close eye on chapter membership numbers. Below I present information on some of our most successful chapters-success being defined by inducting a large number of members, or inducting a high average number of members over a sustained period.
One of the most important factors in the success of projects is the performance of the project manager. The objective of this paper is to verify if the protagonism of a project manager in activities ...with a highly complex environment, due to the technological innovation and pressure generated by being a legal institutional demand, is a key success factor of the project. To achieve the proposed goal a qualitative research was carried out. The data were obtained through interviews with project managers and team members. For this analysis, the MAXQDA software was used. The main result obtained, among others, was the relevance of the role played by the project manager and the strong relationship with the success of the project and with other managerial skills.
Introduction: Trans-venous lead extraction (TLE) carries a risk of tricuspid valve injury with the potential for acute tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Currently there is little data on the incidence of ...valve trauma and clinical outcomes following TLE. We sought to establish the incidence of worsening TR post extraction in a high volume cardiac tertiary centre. Methods: Procedural technique, success and outcomes were assessed in addition to pre and post-procedural echocardiography. Acute worsening of TR was defined as a ≥1 grade increase in TR severity and post-extraction TR severity that was ≥ moderate. Results: 147 leads were extracted from 83 consecutive patients from January 2017–May 2018. There were 40 RV pacing leads, 44 RV defibrillator leads extracted as well as 12-LV leads and 51 atrial leads. Median age of leads extracted were 8.2 years (range 1 month–38 years). Complete procedural success was achieved in 71 (85.5%), clinical success in 79 (95.2%); 33 TLE procedures (40%) were for device infection indications. TLE equipment used included: Tightrail rotating dilator sheaths in 65, Evolution mechanical dilator sheaths in 13, cutting sheaths in 6 and femoral workstation in 8. Post-extraction echocardiographic data were available in 67 (80.7%); ≥ moderate TR was present post TLE in 16 (23.8%). TR was acutely worsened in 10 (16.4%) post-TLE; acute severe mitral regurgitation occurred in one (1.5%) following trans-septal left ventricular lead extraction, requiring mitral valve replacement. Major complications occurred in five (6.0%), minor complications in four (4.8%). Patients with worsening TR had older leads although not statistically significant. Conclusions: Significant TR and acute worsening of TR severity are common following TLE. This may be of importance to patients who develop right sided heart failure following TLE. No clear indicators to predict acute TR were present in this cohort. The long-term implications of TLE related TR on patient outcomes remains unknown.
The growth of the online market lately is very rapid due to the World Wide Web. Many crowdfunding-based companies are helping creative projects grow rapidly. To measure the success of a project based ...solely on the percentage of fundraising cannot represent the favourite market of the desired product backers. In this study, the measure of success is judged by the ratio of the funding amount and the ratio of the product amount in the period of time. After this, there are 4 quadrants that determine the success of the product including: moderate favourite markets (quadrant I), the most favourite markets (quadrant II), not favourite markets (quadrant III), and moderate favourite markets (quadrant IV). Eight companies start-up with 68 selected 3D Printer products in this study. The results show that no single product is in "favourite market". 63 products are in "non-favourite markets". There are only 5 projects in the market "moderate favourites".
Celine Meyers from the South African National Resource Centre for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition (SANRC) recently spent time with Dr André van Zyl, Director of the Academic ...Development Centre at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), in order to learn more about UJ’s recently-implemented Student Success Initiative. Dr Van Zyl has been involved in this important new initiative since its inception. The interview with Dr Van Zyl highlights important components of the UJ Institutional Student Success Initiative (ISSI) and outlines some of the thinking behind the institution’s key efforts to successfully transition students all the way to the graduation stage and beyond.
Receiving a college education has perhaps never been more important than it is today. While its personal, societal, and overall economic benefits are well documented, too many college students fail ...to complete their postsecondary education. As colleges and universities are investing substantial resources into efforts to counter these attrition rates and increase retention, they are mostly unaware of the robust literature on student success that is often bounded in disciplinary silos. The purpose of this book is to bring together in a single volume the extensive knowledge on college student success. It includes seven chapters from authors who each synthesize the literature from their own field of study, or perspective. Each describes the theories, models, and concepts they use; summarizes the key findings from their research; and provides implications for practice, policy, and/or research. The disciplinary chapters offer perspectives from higher education, public policy, behavioral economics, social psychology, STEM, sociology, and critical and post-structural theory.
The importance of higher education has never been clearer. Educational attainment--the number of years a person spends in school--strongly predicts adult earnings, as well as health and civic ...engagement. Yet relative to other developed nations, educational attainment in the United States is lagging, with young Americans who heretofore led the world in completing postsecondary degrees now falling behind their global peers. As part of a broader national college completion agenda aimed at increasing college graduation rates, higher education researchers and policy makers are exploring the role of intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies in supporting student success. "Supporting Students' College Success: The Role of Assessment of Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Competencies" identifies 8 intrapersonal competencies (competencies involving self-management and positive self-evaluation) that can be developed through interventions and appear to be related to persistence and success in undergraduate education. The report calls for further research on the importance of these competencies for college success, reviews current assessments of them and establishes priorities for the use of current assessments, and outlines promising new approaches for improved assessments.
