Boston National Historical Park is one of America's most popular
heritage destinations, drawing in millions of visitors annually.
Tourists flock there to see the site of the Boston Massacre, to
...relive Paul Revere's midnight ride, and to board Old
Ironsides -all of these bound together by the iconic Freedom
Trail, which traces the city's revolutionary saga. Making sense of
the Revolution, however, was never the primary aim for the planners
who reimagined Boston's heritage landscape after the Second World
War. Seth C. Bruggeman demonstrates that the Freedom Trail was
always largely a tourist gimmick, devised to lure affluent white
Americans into downtown revival schemes, its success hinging on a
narrow vision of the city's history run through with old stories
about heroic white men. When Congress pressured the National Park
Service to create this historical park for the nation's
bicentennial celebration in 1976, these ideas seeped into its
organizational logic, precluding the possibility that history might
prevail over gentrification and profit.
Progressivism, Connolly argues, was a form of political action available to a range of individuals and groups. In showing that the reform visions arising in Boston included not only the progressivism ...of its business leaders but also a series of ethnic progressivisms, Connolly offers a new approach to urban public life in the early 20th century.
Tun formation is an essential morphological adaptation for entering the anhydrobiotic state in tardigrades, but its internal structure has rarely been investigated. We present the structure and ...ultrastructure of organs and cells in desiccated
Richtersius coronifer
by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and histochemical methods. A 3D reconstruction of the body organization of the tun stage is also presented. The tun formation during anhydrobiosis of tardigrades is a process of anterior-posterior body contraction, which relocates some organs such as the pharyngeal bulb. The cuticle is composed of epicuticle, intracuticle and procuticle; flocculent coat; and trilaminate layer. Moulting does not seem to restrict the tun formation, as evidenced from tardigrade tuns that were in the process of moulting. The storage cells of desiccated specimens filled up the free inner space and surrounded internal organs, such as the ovary and digestive system, which were contracted. All cells (epidermal cells, storage cells, ovary cells, cells of the digestive system) underwent shrinkage, and their cytoplasm was electron dense. Lipids and polysaccharides dominated among reserve material of storage cells, while the amount of protein was small. The basic morphology of specific cell types and organelles did not differ between active and anhydrobiotic

This review examines the quantitative behavioural studies that have evaluated the effects of Montessori pedagogy on children's psychological development and school learning. The analyses of only ...three "Randomized Controlled Trials-RCT" studies published to date reveal varied and contradictory effects. Firstly, these findings are discussed in the light of several methodological limitations: the absence of active control groups, small sample sizes, diversity of measures, or lack of control over the implementation fidelity of both Montessori and conventional pedagogy. Secondly, these findings are discussed in the light of what Montessori pedagogy does not emphasise in its conception of development and the role of the teacher, namely the place given to language and pretend play.
The Boston Harbor Islands have been called Boston's "hidden shores." While some are ragged rocks teeming with coastal wildlife, such as oystercatchers and harbor seals, others resemble manicured ...parks or have the appearance of wooded hills rising gently out of the water. Largely ignored by historians and previously home to prisons, asylums, and sewage treatment plants, this surprisingly diverse ensemble of islands has existed quietly on the urban fringe over the last four centuries. Even their latest incarnation as a national park and recreational hub has emphasized their separation from, rather than their connection to, the city. In this book, Pavla Šimková reinterprets the Boston Harbor Islands as an urban archipelago, arguing that they have been an integral part of Boston since colonial days, transformed by the city's changing values and catering to its current needs. Drawing on archival sources, historic maps and photographs, and diaries from island residents, this absorbing study attests that the harbor islands' story is central to understanding the ways in which Boston has both shaped and been shaped by its environment over time.
Ms. Donna Haskins is an African American woman who wrestles with
structural inequity in the streets of Boston by inhabiting an
alternate dimension she refers to as the "spirit realm." In this
other ...place, she is prepared by the Holy Spirit to challenge the
restrictions placed upon Black female bodies in the United States.
Growing into her spiritual gifts of astral flight and time travel,
Donna meets the spirits of enslaved Africans, conducts spiritual
warfare against sexual predators, and tends to the souls of
murdered Black children whose ghosts haunt the inner city. Take
Back What the Devil Stole centers Donna's encounters with the
supernatural to offer a powerful narrative of how one woman seeks
to reclaim her power from a lifetime of social violence. Both
ethnographic and personal, Onaje X. O. Woodbine's portrait of her
spiritual life sheds new light on the complexities of Black women's
religious participation and the lived religion of the dispossessed.
Woodbine explores Donna's religious creativity and her sense of
multireligious belonging as she blends together Catholic,
Afro-Caribbean, and Black Baptist traditions. Through the gripping
story of one local prophet, this book offers a deeply original
account of the religious experiences of Black women in contemporary
America: their bodies, their haunted landscapes, and their
spiritual worlds.
The lautering process is the solid‐liquid separation of a suspension. For this purpose, the international brewing industry mainly uses mash filters or lauter tuns. From a process‐technological point of view, this process involves a combination of screen filtration and deep‐bed filtration, whereas the deep‐bed filtration mainly prevails in the lauter tun. Both are technically sophisticated and technologically specialized processes. The article provides an overview of the status quo of lautering technology in terms of design and performance as well as their respective influence on the beer production. Finally, future research and development objectives regarding the lautering process are presented and put up for discussion.
This article looks at the role of the technocracy in economic policy-making in Malaysia. The analysis was conducted across two phases, namely the period before and after the 1997/98 economic and ...financial crises, and during the premiership of four prime ministers namely Tun Razak, Dr Mahathir, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and Najib Razak. It is claimed that the technocrats played an important role in helping the political leadership achieve their objectives. The article traces the changing fortunes of the technocracy from the 1970s to the present. Under the premiership of Tun Razak, technocrats played an important role in ensuring the success of his programs. However, under Dr Mahathir, the technocrats sometimes took a back seat because their approach was not in line with some of his more visionary ventures and his unconventional approach particularly in managing the 1997/98 financial crisis. Under the leadership of both Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak, the technocrats regain their previous position of prominence in policy-making. In conclusion, the technocracy with their expert knowledge, have served as an important force in Malaysia. Although their approach is based on economic rationality, their skills have been effectively negotiated with the demands of the political leadership, because of which Malaysia is able to maintain both economic growth and political stability.

If you take Boston's Blue Line to its northern end, you'll reach the Wonderland stop. Few realize that a twenty-three-acre amusement park once sat nearby-the largest in New England, and grander than ...any of the Coney Island parks that inspired it. Opened in Revere on Memorial Day in 1906 to great fanfare, Wonderland offered hundreds of thousands of visitors recreation by the sea, just a short distance from downtown Boston. The story of the park's creation and wild, but brief, success is full of larger-than-life characters who hoped to thrill attendees and rake in profits. Stephen R. Wilk describes the planning and history of the park, which featured early roller coasters, a scenic railway, a central lagoon in which a Shoot-the-Chutes boat plunged, an aerial swing, a funhouse, and more. Performances ran throughout the day, including a daring Fires and Flames show; a Wild West show; a children's theater; and numerous circus acts. While nothing remains of what was once called "Boston's Regal Home of Pleasure" and the park would close in 1910, this book resurrects Wonderland by transporting readers through its magical gates.
