with a HRT of 6 days. In the plant, the pH level of the influent varied from 3.50 to 4.40 but the pH of the treated effluent stabilized to a range of 7.36 to 7.68 during the study period. The operation of the reactors during study period revealed the stable conditions of the reactors, which is evident from the low COD, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total solids (TS) contents in treated effluent. In the plant, the COD, BOD

and TS removal efficiencies were stabilized to the range of 62.19–66.59, 72.42–77.11, and 58.47–60.46%, respectively at an organic loading rate of 2.15–4.60 kg COD m
−3
day
−1
. The biogas production was stabilized to the range of 48,290–135,115 m
3

−1
with 60% methane content. The total quantity of biogas produced ranged from 0.40 to 0.57, 1.04 to 1.71 and 0.40 to 0.56 m

kg
−1
removals of COD, BOD and TS, respectively. This study concluded that the treatment of distillery spentwash using UASB reactors contributed significantly for pollution load reduction besides generating renewable in-house bio-energy.
Studies have been carried out to correlate biogas-induced mixing and granulation in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, treating low-strength as well as high-strength biodegradable ...wastewaters. A dimensionless granulation index (GI) has been framed taking into account the mixing in sludge bed due to produced biogas. Analysis of full-scale, pilot-scale and lab-scale UASB reactors treating actual wastewaters reveals the significance of biogas-induced mixing, represented by GI, on granulation of biomass in the reactors. For obtaining proper granulation in UASB reactors (percentage granules greater than 50%, w/w), resulting in higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, it is recommended to maintain GI values in the range of 15,000–57,000.
This experiment examined the effects of the discharge of water treatment plant (WTP) sludge into the following three types of wastewater treatment systems: a pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge ...blanket (UASB) reactor, a pilot-scale activated sludge system, and a full-scale activated sludge sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The UASB reactor received 50 mg of suspended solids (SS) of WTP sludge per liter of wastewater in the first phase, and, in the second phase, it received 75 mg SS/L. The pilot-scale activated sludge system received 25 and 50 mg SS/L in the first and second phases, respectively. The full-scale WWTP (SBR) received approximately 74 mg SS/L. The results of the experiments showed that, despite some negative effects on nitrification, there were positive effects on phosphorus removal, and, furthermore, there was the addition of solids in all systems.
This work deals with the development and application of a model-based control system for an anaerobic digestion process which can recover energy using methane combustion. Due to the spatially ...distributed dynamics of some variables of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, a type of anaerobic digestion process, the traditional control systems may have insufficient performance to handle the complexity. An input-output (I/O) linearizing control scheme for a UASB reactor is developed for a two-step (acidogenesis-methanogenesis) kinetic model described by a coupled PDE-ODE system. The organic substrate (characterized by COD) is manipulated through the feed flow to achieve the desired trajectories. A simulation for closed-loop responses of the proposed control system is conducted and control performances are determined for servo and regulatory problems. The results show that the developed method provides very good responses to achieve the desired set points and handle the control problems without offset.
The granulation process was extensively examined using phenol as sole carbon source in a 2-L laboratory upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The study was conducted mesophilically at 35 ...°C. Anaerobically digested sludge was used as seed after a 14-day activation period with glucose feed. Massive initial granules were developed after 3 months of startup, grew at an accelerated pace for 6 months, then became fully grown. The granulation process can be broken into three phases: acclimation, granulation, and maturation. However, granulation with phenol proceeded more slowly than it did in UASB reactors fed with readily biodegradable carbohydrates studied previously. The granular sludge cultivated had a median diameter of 1.8 mm, phenol-degrading activity of 0.65 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/g volatile suspended solids (VSS)·d, and a sludge volume index of 14 mL/g. Phenol COD removal efficiency of 86% was achieved when the reactor was operating at an influent phenol concentration of 1260 mg/L (corresponding to 3000 mg COD/L), hydraulic retention time of 12 hours, and volumetric loading rate of 6 g COD/L·d. However, the lower-than-expected phenol COD removal efficiency could be attributed to inhibition by the high influent phenol concentration or loading. The batch test demonstrated that the sludge methanogenic activity was reduced by 52 and 75% at phenol concentrations of 420 and 840 mg/L, respectively.

Sistemde farklı organik yükleme hızlarında (3.53-10.59 kgKOİ/m3gün) kimyasal oksijen ihtiyacı (KOİ) giderimi ve metan gazı miktarı ölçülmüştür. Çalışmada anaerobik UASB reaktörde en yüksek KOİ giderme verimine %90.3 olarak 7.06 kg KOİ/m3gün organik yükleme hızında ulaşılmıştır. Anaerobik arıtma kısmında oluşan biyogazda en yüksek ölçülen metan gazı oranı %65 olmuştur. Elde edilen sonuçlar besi çiftliği atıksularının ardışık anaerobik yukarı akışlı çamur yataklı reaktör/ aerobik sürekli karıştırmalı tank reaktörde arıtılabilirliğinin yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. KOİ değerinin yüksek oluşu, bu tür atıksuların arıtımında anaerobik yöntemlerin kullanılmasının uygun olabileceğini göstermektedir.
