The article seeks to examine the book collection which Tommaso Giustiniani (1477-1528) brought with him in Holy Hermitage (Eremo) of Camaldoli from Venice when the Venetian nobleman became a ...Camaldolese monk in 1510 with the name of Paolo. The research of the volumes (27 incunabula and 12 16th century editions) with his ownership note "Thomae Iustiniani et amicorum", gathered before his religious vocation, demonstrates the development and new attitudes of his personal interests. His studying interests modified between the period as a student at the University of Padua and his following staying in Venice, illustrating the raise of his religious reflection before his entry in Camaldoli. Se estudia un consilium médico sobre la fiebre héctica escrito por el veronés Mateo Boldieri, profesor de medicina en la Universidad de Padua durante el siglo XV. La obra expone el tratamiento que un ...paciente predispuesto a dicha enfermedad debe seguir durante la realización de un viaje. Analizamos la estructura y contenido de la obra, investigamos las características del caso clínico a la luz de los datos extraídos de la misma y, por último, examinamos el sistema horario empleado en el régimen que debe seguir el destinatario.
This article introduces the deep background to the interest in Italy and specifically Padua displayed by Shakespeare and his contemporaries by attending to the contrasts between their knowledge and ...that of English characters from a century earlier. Our guide will be John Tiptoft, Earl of Worcester (d. 1470). He was both well-travelled and much-hated in his homeland: he was accused of bringing home from his time abroad ‘the law Padowe’, that is, ‘the law of Padua’ – a penchant for summary justice and grisly execution. This article considers what Tiptoft's life and afterlife tells us about the changing place of Padua in the English imagination.
Феофил Коридаллевс (1574–1646), глава Патриаршей школы в Константинополе, был одним из ярких представителей одновременно как падуанской, так и греческой школы. Первое сочинение в своём логическом ...компендиуме Коридаллевс целиком посвящает исследованию природы логики. В первую очередь, он доказывает, что логика не может являться эпистеме (ἐπιστήμη / scientia), а только техне (τέχνη / ars). Для этого он делает подробный обзор значения данных понятий у Аристотеля, чем показывает различие в их понимании современными и латинскими авторами. Коридаллевс не признаёт выделения практической (utens) и теоретической (docens) логики, что позволяло схоластам относить последнюю к scientia. Коридаллевс также не соглашается с положением стоиков, согласно которому логика является частью философии, он считает её инструментом философии. Подробным образом он останавливается на предмете (ὑποκείμενον) логики, а точнее — её материи (поскольку логика является техне, то она имеет материю), а также её целях, т.е. родительном и дательном телосе (τέλος), которые выделял Аристотель на основании грамматических особенностей греческого языка. Based on the newly discovered, extensive manuscript notes of a virtually unknown German medical student by the name of Johann Konrad Zinn, who studied in Padua from 1593 to 1595, this paper offers a ...detailed account of what medical students could expect to learn about anatomy in late sixteenth-century Padua. It highlights the large number and wide range of anatomical demonstrations, most of which were private anatomies for a small circle of students and do not figure in Acta of the German Nation, the principal source historians have so far relied upon. While the large audience in the big, celebrated public anatomies made it difficult if not impossible for the students to see the details of the anatomical structures, the much more numerous private anatomies offered a view from close up. As Zinn’s notes show, the two leading Paduan anatomists, Hieronymus Fabricius Aquapendente and Giulio Casseri often focused on a specific part of the body, like the brain or the pregnant uterus, and, following the Galenic model, consistently linked the demonstration of the fabric of that part to a discussion of its action and uses. In this sense, the different kinds of valves in the body, including those in the veins, were shown and discussed, as a subsection on William Harvey underlines, and the vivisection of animals for a group of students even allowed them to see the beating heart and other organs in action. In retrospect, much of the anatomical knowledge that students acquired in late sixteenth-century Padua was of limited relevance for medical practice but the anatomists did their best to point out such clinical uses and even used anatomical demonstrations to show different kinds surgical interventions on the corpse.
