In the Golden Age of Spanish Theater, an age of highly dramatized coronations and regal spectacles, Alban Forcione has discovered a surprising but persistent preoccupation with the disrobing of the ...king. In both the celebrations of majesty and the enthrallment with its unveiling, he finds the chilling recesses in which a culture struggled to reconcile the public and the private, society and the individual, the monarch and the man.
In brilliantly reinterpreting two of Lope de Vega's plays, long regarded as conventional royalist propaganda, Forcione places his texts in the context of political and institutional history, philosophy, theology, and art history. In so doing he shows how Spanish theater anticipated the decisive changes in human consciousness that characterized the ascendance of the absolutist state and its threat to the cultivation of individuality, authenticity, and humanity.
Trueblood pursues the artistic consequences of a key experience in Lope's life, the four-year love affair with Elena Osorio that terminated violently in 1587. Trueblood provides by far the fullest ...analysis and elucidation of Lope's masterpiece, La Dorotea, that it has ever received.
In 1492 the Spanish humanist Antonio de Nebrija proclaimed that "language has always been the companion of empire." Taking as his touchstone a wonderfully suggestive sonnet that Garcilaso de la Vega ...wrote in 1535 from the neighborhood of ruined Carthage in North Africa, Richard Helgerson examines how the companionship of language and empire played itself out more generally in the "new poetry" of sixteenth-century Europe. Along with his friend Juan Boscn, Garcilaso was one of the great pioneers of that poetry, radically reforming Spanish verse in imitation of modern Italian and ancient Roman models. As the century progressed, similar projects were undertaken in France by Ronsard and du Bellay, in Portugal by Cames, and in England by Sidney and Spenser. And wherever the new poetry emerged, it was prompted by a sense that imperial ambitionthe quest to be in the present what Rome had been in the pastrequired a vernacular poetry comparable to the poetry of Rome.
But, as Helgerson shows, the new poetry had other commitments than to empire. Though imperial ambition looms large in Garcilaso's sonnet and others, by the end of the poem Garcilaso identifies not with Rome but with the Carthaginian queen Dido, one of empire's legendary victims. And with this startling shift, which has its counterpart in poems from all over Europe, comes one of the most important departures the poem makes from its apparent imperial agenda.
Addressing these rival concerns as they arise in a single sonnet, Richard Helgerson provides a masterful and multifaceted image of one of the most vital episodes in European literary history.
This article analyzes the existing violence in El pastor de Iberia (1591) by Bernardo de la Vega attending to the two manifestations in which this destructive impulse is presented and developed: as physical violence that annihilates both the characters and the space they inhabit, and also in a discursive aspect that attacks the topical language of the pastoral genre. Keywords: El pastor de Iberia, pastoral genre, violence.
This paper analyses the function of the four Old Testament stories rewritten by Lope de Vega in the first book of Pastores de Belen: the rape of Dinah by Shechem, the story of David and Bathsheba, the rape of Tamar by Amnon and the story of Susanna and the judges. I propose reading the text via an itinerary beginning with sin, which symbolizes a humanity in ruins, and that culminates with the anticipation of the coming of the Messiah. The four interpolated stories, read together, serve to interpret the main theme of Pastores de Belen, but they can also be understood in a biographical sense, as part of Lope's cycle of repentance. Keywords: Pastores de Belen, Lope de Vega, Bible, Old Testament, sexual violence, cycle of repentance.
Palabras clave: libros de caballería, lectores, cultura letrada, virreinato peruano, conquistadores españoles Chivalry books were one of the most widespread literary genres in the Spanish Empire during the Sixteenth and early Seventeenth centuries. Although it has been written that they circulated and read in the Peruvian viceroyalty, the documentary evidence in this regard is insufficient. In this note, I problematize both aspects from the existing bibliography and documentary sources. Keywords: Chivalric books, readers, literate culture, Peruvian viceroyalty, Spanish conquerors
