Only a few astrophysical points and synchronisms listed in texts provide anchor points for the absolute chronology of Ancient Egypt. At first we will show how we can re-calculate some of these anchor ...points by using Sothic dating based on the arcus visionis method, and modelling lunar dates using a Bayesian approach. Then, we will discuss two radiocarbon studies carried out on short-lived Egyptian materials held at the Louvre Museum that could be attributed to particular reigns or other precise periods. Using a Bayesian approach, these dates were combined with the known order of succession and the lengths of reigns. Sothic and lunar dates were integrated as priors in the model. This approach has led to a new proposal for the absolute chronology of Egypt's 18th Dynasty.

Centre for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage (CIRCE) has, recently, obtained some promising results in testing the feasibility of mortar radiocarbon dating by means of an ad ...hoc developed purification procedure (CryoSoniC: Cryobraking, Sonication, Centrifugation) applied to a series of laboratory mortars. Observed results encouraged CryoSoniC accuracy evaluation on genuine mortars sampled from archeological sites of known or independently constrained age (i.e., other 14C dates on different materials).
In this study, some 14C measurements performed on genuine mortars will be discussed and compared with independently estimated (i.e., radiocarbon/archaeometrical dating) absolute chronologies of two Spanish sites. Observed results confirm the agreement of the CryoSoniC mortar dates with the archaeological expectations for both examined cases.
Several authors reported the possibility of obtaining accurate radiocarbon dates of mortar matrices by analyzing lime lumps: binder-related particles of different sizes exclusively composed of calcium carbonate.
In this paper, preliminary data for the absolute chronology reconstruction of the Basilica of the cemetery complex of Ponte della Lama (Canosa di Puglia, Italy) based on lime lumps will also be discussed. Dating accuracy will be quantified by comparing 14C data on mortar lime lumps from a funerary inscription of known age found near the Basilica, in the same study site. For this site, a comparison between absolute chronologies performed by bulk and CryoSoniC purified lime lumps, and charcoal incased in mortars (when found) will also be discussed.
Observed results for this site provide evidence of how bulk lime lump dating may introduce systematic overestimations of the analyzed sample while CryoSoniC purification allows accurate dating.
This volume presents the results of a multidisciplinary research program (“Balkans 4000”) financed by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and coordinated by the editor between 2007 and 2011, ...when she was a member of the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée (Laboratory of Archaeology and Archaeometry). 192 new radiocarbon dates have been produced in the laboratories of Lyon, Saclay and Demokritos, from 34 archaeological sites, spanning the years from the end of the 6th to the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC. They shed light on the evolution of human settlement during the late stages of the Neolithic period in Greece and Bulgaria, and more specifically on the transition from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age during the “obscure” 4th millennium BC. Thirty-one scholars, archaeologists as well as radiocarbon scientists, are signing the contributions.

Chr. allgemein in SM IA stattgefunden haben, wobei SM IA sich trotzdem mit dem Beginn des Neuen Reiches in Ägypten überschnitten haben mag, traditionell um 1540 v. Chr. datiert. Ergänzend sei nämlich darauf hingewiesen, dass auch die Regierungsdaten der Pharaonen mit gewissen ʻToleranzbereichenʼ zu sehen sind. – Der entsprechende Ansatz wird anschließend für die Zeit bis zum Ende der ägäischen Bronzezeit angewandt.
Le complexe industriel à pointes à cran et lamelles à dos tronquées de l’abri de Chinchon 1, dans le Vaucluse, a été diversement interprété au cours des dernières décennies : pour certains, il se ...rattache de toute évidence à une phase très finale, et classique, du Magdalénien supérieur ; pour d’autres, il se rattache, de façon tout aussi évidente, à une phase ancienne, italique, du Tardigravettien. Les résultats des études stratigraphiques, sédimentologiques et paléontologiques plaident pour accorder un âge ancien à ce complexe qu’il n’avait pas été, jusqu’à présent, possible de dater de façon absolue. Nous présentons ici des jalons chronologiques absolus nouveaux pour cet épisode. Ils sont analysés dans le cadre d’une modélisation chronologique bayésienne. Leurs rapports chronologiques avec le Tardisolutréen salpêtrien du Languedoc et avec la période de fréquentation la plus récente de la grotte Cosquer sont précisés. On montre que Tardisolutréen salpêtrien (ancien) et Tardigravettien ancien à pointes à cran sont partiellement synchrones et que, dans la région tardigravettienne où s’ouvre la grotte Cosquer, c’est pendant la phase ancienne du Tardigravettien à pointes à cran qu’ont été réalisées les peintures et gravures de la seconde période de fréquentation de la grotte.
Se presentan los resultados de las recientes intervenciones arqueológicas realizadas en la necrópolis del Hierro I de Sebes (Flix, Tarragona). Se ha precisado la extensión de la necrópolis, su ...duración, los rituales funerarios y la estructura social de la población mediante técnicas y métodos de carácter interdisciplinar (antropología, carbono 14, prospecciones geofísicas…). Se ha constatado la coexistencia de túmulos y urnas y la agrupación de las estructuras en dos áreas. Sobre esta base se pretende mejorar el conocimiento de las necrópolis de cremación en un territorio de contacto entre diferentes tradiciones de enterramiento. Se dan a conocer datos inéditos procedentes del estudio antropológico de los huesos cremados de Sebes y de las dataciones radiocarbónicas de algunos de ellos. Estos datos, considerados en conjunto con los del resto de la necrópolis, permiten relacionarla más con las necrópolis tumulares leridanas que con las del Bajo Aragón - Terra Alta.
Der Artikel behandelt methodische und konzeptionelle Aspekte des Umgangs mit Zeit und deren Bestimmung in der Prähistorischen Archäologie. Ausgangspunkt ist dabei die statistische Skalentheorie, ...insbesondere deren Unterscheidung zwischen ordinalen und rationalen Skalen. Die konventionellen Methoden der Typologie, Stratigraphie und Seriation werden hinsichtlich der ihnen zugrunde liegenden Skalentypen und Eigenschaften verglichen. Alle „relativchronologischen“ Methoden verbindet die Verwendung nichttemporaler Variablen als Zeitproxy sowie eine ordinale Skalierung der abgeleiteten Zeitachse. Die Skalentheorie stellt einen hierarchischen Zusammenhang zwischen Skalentyp und zulässigen arithmetischen und logischen Operationen her, der für die archäologische Argumentation mit Zeit eine erhebliche und nicht immer hinreichend reflektierte Bedeutung hat. Diskutiert werden auch die Skaleneigenschaften von Datierungsmodellen auf der Basis korrespondenzanalytischer Seriationen, bei denen die Projektion im Eigenvektorraum eine intervallskalierte Zeitachse suggeriert.
Chronologische Konzepte werden, so die hier vertretene These, in ihrer jeweiligen Betonung von Entwicklungskontinuitäten oder aber Zäsuren und Diskontinuitäten von der jeweils hauptsächlich angewendeten Methode der Zeitbestimmung geprägt. Die Skaleneigenschaften der chronologischen Methodik haben also Auswirkungen auf die kulturhistorische Interpretation archäologischer Phänomene. Abschließend wird auf die in letzter Zeit zunehmend verwendete Bayes’sche Statistik bei der Entwicklung absolutchronologischer Datierungsmodelle Bezug genommen. Durch die Einbeziehung verschiedenartiger Kontextinformation eröffnen sich neue Spielräume für komplexe probabilistische Datierungsmodelle, in denen tendenziell die Grenzen zwischen ordinaler und rationaler Skalierung der Zeit verwischt werden.
Cet article traite des aspects méthodiques et conceptionnels de la manipulation du temps et de sa fonction dans l’archéologie préhistorique. La théorie scalaire servira de point de départ, particulièrement la distinction qu’elle opère entre échelles ordinales et rationnelles. Les méthodes conventionnelles des typologie, stratigraphie et sériation sont comparées quant aux types d’échelle et propriétés sur lesquelles elles reposent. Toutes les méthodes «chronologiques relatives» ont en commun le recours à des variables non temporelles comme indicateurs chronologiques et à une graduation ordinale de l’axe chronologique inféré. La théorie scalaire établit un lien hiérarchique entre le type d’échelle et les opérations arithmétiques ou logiques autorisées. Ce lien a une très grande importance pour l’argumentation archéologique basée sur le temps à laquelle on ne réfléchit pas toujours assez. Sont également discutées les propriétés scalaires de modèles de datation basés sur des sériations (obtenues par une analyse des correspondances), dont la projection dans l’espace vectoriel propre suggère un axe chronologique gradué en intervalles.
Selon la thèse avancée ici, les concepts chronologiques, lorsqu’ils marquent des continuités ou des césures et discontinuités, sont chaque fois fort influencés par la méthode de datation principale utilisée. Les propriétés scalaires de la méthode chronologique agissent donc sur l’interprétation culturelle et historique des phénomènes archéologiques. Nous abordons finalement la statistique bayésienne, de plus en plus utilisée ces derniers temps dans l’élaboration de modèles de datation chronologique absolue. Par l’intégration de différentes informations contextuelles, de nouvelles possibilités s’ouvrent à des modèles probabilistes complexes, où les limites entre graduation ordinale et rationnelle tendent à s’estomper.
The paper discusses methodological aspects of time and dating in prehistoric archaeology. Referring to statistical scale theory it focuses on the distinction of ordinal and rational scales. Conventional dating methods like typology, stratigraphy and seriation are compared in view of their scale types and properties. All methods of relative chronology can be shown to apply non-temporal proxies of time and an ordinal scale of the inferred time axis. The theory of scales defines a hierarchic relation between scale type and permissible arithmetic and logical operations. The way of inferring and interpreting time in archaeology quite often does not reflect and respect these methodological constraints. A special issue are the scale properties of chronological models based on seriation. Correspondence analysis, as the most wide spread seriation approach, may suggest an interval time scale of types and find complexes when plotted in a diagram of the first two eigenvectors.
It is suggested that dating methods strongly influence chronological concepts, emphasizing either continuous evolution or rather discontinuity. The scale properties of chronology thus bias the interpretation of archaeological phenomena. Finally the paper discusses the impact of Bayesian statistics applied to the calibration of radiocarbon dates. It is argued that the inclusion of context information not only enables new and more sophisticated dating models, but also blurs the dividing line between ordinal and rational time scales.
