A growing number of cities are preparing for climate change impacts by developing adaptation plans. However, little is known about how these plans and their implementation affect the vulnerability of ...the urban poor. We critically assess initiatives in eight cities worldwide and find that land use planning for climate adaptation can exacerbate socio-spatial inequalities across diverse developmental and environmental conditions. We argue that urban adaptation injustices fall into two categories: acts of commission, when interventions negatively affect or displace poor communities, and acts of omission, when they protect and prioritize elite groups at the expense of the urban poor.
A growing body of research has been devoted to examining the parallels between translation and film adaptation. Given these parallels and the role of translation in intercultural exchange, this paper ...aims to explore the role of film adaptation as another possible means of exchange, i.e. how literature crosses borders through film adaptations. To do so, it will draw upon the case of Spanish literary works (i.e., from the nation of Spain) that have been present in the United States as both film adaptations and literary translations. This will be done by analyzing a corpus of Spanish films that have been imported into the United States as both film adaptations and literary translations between the years 1895 and 2018. Theoretical tools from the Polysystem theory will be used to examine the characteristics of these films, their corresponding literary works, and the combinations arising from their importation. Seven main patterns governing the relationship between film adaptation and literary translation will be revealed and briefly illustrated.
This paper aims at discussing the visual symbols as well as aspects such as the acting performances, the historical accuracy, the teleplay, and the direction in Franc Roddam’s 1998 television ...miniseries 'Moby Dick', adapted from Herman Melville’s homonymous novel (1851). The two-part television production incorporates a few symbolic elements not necessarily present in the source text. These symbols (the image of a dog, the evocation of a giant, a whale-shaped mark, a great fire and an underwater corpse) are visually associated with characters as diverse as Elijah, Ahab, Queequeg and Moby Dick. The investigation focuses thus on the possible interpretations suggested by these visual symbols and how they contribute to better our comprehension not only of these characters but also of the novel’s complex themes of death, power, evil, redemption, among others. Resumo O presente trabalho objetiva discutir os símbolos visuais bem como aspetos tais como as atuações, a reconstituição de época, a roteirização e a realização relativamente à minissérie de televisão 'Moby Dick' (1998), uma adaptação da obra homónima de Herman Melville, realizada por Franc Roddam. A produção televisiva, dividida em dois episódios, incorpora certos elementos simbólicos não necessariamente presentes no texto-fonte. Esses símbolos (a imagem de um cão, a evocação de um gigante, uma marca em forma de baleia, um incêndio de grandes proporções e um cadáver submerso) são visualmente associados a personagens tão diversas quanto Elijah, Ahab, Queequeg e Moby Dick. A investigação enfoca, portanto, as possíveis interpretações sugeridas por esses símbolos visuais e como eles contribuem para aprimorar a nossa compreensão de tais personagens e de temas complexos abordados no romance como a morte, o poder, o mal, a redenção, entre outros. The contemporary children’s robinsonade exemplifies an amalgamation of several centuries worth of intertexts, visible not only in the texts themselves but also in their audiences. In addition to ...adapting narrative elements, such as the shipwreck or the encounter with Friday, the narrative intent of didacticism spans over centuries, emulating ideologies of eighteenth-, nineteenth-, or twenty-first-century cultures. By utilising adaptation theory, it is possible to consider the Crusoe story as an interpretively doubled narrative of didacticism and to examine the emergence of the children’s robinsonade through the reception of eighteenth- and twenty-first-century audiences. The following essay compares the novel Buick Rivera (2002), written by Bosnian Croat author Miljenko Jergović, and its 2008 film adaptation by Goran Rušinović. The novel’s main plot, dealing with the ...accidental meeting between a Bošnjak (Bosnian Muslim) expatriate and a Bosnian Serb war criminal in the US, seems unchanged in the film version. However, the director modifies the original setting and several details in the characters’ background stories. Analyzing these changes and the story’s cinematic rendition, we comment on the two authors’ varying approaches to topics such as war, ethical responsibility, emigration, and assimilation in post-9/11 American society. The analysis furthermore develops the idea of the film adaptation process as a unique form of transmediatic and transcultural emigration, in which the plot migrates from one medium to another and from one culture to another with specific effects.
