Web mashups are Web applications developed using contents and services available online. Despite rapidly increasing interest in mashups, comprehensive development tools and frameworks are lacking, ...and in most cases mashing up a new application implies a significant manual programming effort. This article overviews current tools, frameworks, and trends that aim to facilitate mashup development. The authors use a set of characteristic dimensions to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of some representative approaches.
In order to improve the communications inside and outside the enterprise, efficient utilization of enterprise capitals and make improvements in the services and products of enterprise, many ...enterprises have turned to use enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. On the other hand, the more the role of knowledge assets in enterprises grows, the higher the position of knowledge management (KM) in the enterprises becomes and it gradually becomes fundamental to success. The role of knowledge management in today’s knowledge-based world has attracted considerable attention to this topic in industry and academia. The use of ERP and knowledge management in enterprises for the continuation of effective functioning in knowledge-based economy arises the need to study the interactions between ERP and knowledge management and also the possibility of the integration of ERP and KM systems. The mutual relation between knowledge management and enterprise resources planning can be studied from the three perspectives of (A) the effects of knowledge management on the implementation and use of ERP, (B) the ERP effects on improving knowledge management process, and (C) the integration of knowledge management and enterprise resources planning systems. By studying a wide range of academic literature on KM and ERP, this paper aims to review the relation between knowledge management and enterprise resources planning and analyze the opportunities of future research in this area.
Due to large volumes of data from Cloud Computing and from the Internet of Things, the companies' software ecosystem requires an efficient integration of applications and services. Performance ...improvement from integration platforms' runtime systems is directly related to task scheduling strategies from integration processes. It is still a challenge to find the proper heuristic for a given integration process subject to high inbound data rates. This article proposes a simulation tool for the field of Enterprise Application Integration, which implements different scheduling heuristics and allows the extraction of performance metrics. Three task scheduling heuristics were simulated during the integration process, and the results were evaluated through statistical tests.

Companies are taking advantage of cloud computing to upgrade their business processes. Cloud computing requires interaction with many kinds of applications, so it is necessary to improve the ...performance of software tools that allow keeping information on all these applications consistent and synchronised. Integration platforms are specialised software tools that provide support to design, implement, run, and monitor integration solutions, which aim to orchestrate a set of applications so as to promote compatibility among their data or to develop new functionality on top of the current ones. The run‐time system is the part of the integration platform responsible for running the integration solutions, which makes its performance the uttermost important issue. The contribution of this article is two‐fold: a framework and an evaluation of integration platforms. The former is a framework composed of ten properties grouped into two dimensions to evaluate the run‐time systems focusing on performance. Using this framework as reference, the second contribution is an evaluation of nine open‐source integration platforms, which represent the state‐of‐the‐art, provide support to the integration patterns, and follow the pipes‐and‐filters architectural style. In addition, as a result of this work, we suggest open research directions that can be explored to improve the performance of the run‐time systems and at the same time may be useful to adapt them to the context of cloud computing.

Companies typically rely on applications purchased from third parties or developed at home to support their business activities. It is not uncommon that these applications were not designed taking integration into account. Enterprise Application Integration provides methodologies and tools to design and implement integration solutions. Camel, Spring Integration, and Mule range amongst the most popular open-source tools that provide support to implement integration solutions. The adaptive maintenance of a software tool is very important for companies that need to reuse existing tools to build their own. We have analysed 25 maintainability measures on Camel, Spring Integration, and Mule. We have conducted a statistical analysis to confirm the results obtained with the maintainability measures, and it follows that these tools may have problems regarding maintenance. These problems increase the costs of the adaptation process. This motivated us to work on a new proposal that has been carefully designed in order to reduce maintainability efforts. Guaraná SDK is the software tool that we provide to implement integration solutions. We have also computed the maintainability measures regarding Guaraná SDK and the results suggest that maintaining it is easier than maintaining the others. Furthermore, we have conducted an industrial experience to demonstrate the application of our proposal in industry.
The LOD2 Stack is an integrated distribution of aligned tools which support the whole life cycle of Linked Data from extraction, authoring/creation via enrichment, interlinking, fusing to ...maintenance. The LOD2 Stack comprises new and substantially extended existing tools from the LOD2 project partners and third parties. The stack is designed to be versatile; for all functionality we define clear interfaces, which enable the plugging in of alternative third-party implementations. The architecture of the LOD2 Stack is based on three pillars: (1) Software integration and deployment using the Debian packaging system. (2) Use of a central SPARQL endpoint and standardized vocabularies for knowledge base access and integration between the different tools of the LOD2 Stack. (3) Integration of the LOD2 Stack user interfaces based on REST enabled Web Applications. These three pillars comprise the methodological and technological framework for integrating the very heterogeneous LOD2 Stack components into a consistent framework. In this article we describe these pillars in more detail and give an overview of the individual LOD2 Stack components. The article also includes a description of a real-world usage scenario in the publishing domain.
The need for integration of applications and services in business processes from enterprises has increased with the advancement of cloud and mobile applications. Enterprises started dealing with high ...volumes of data from the cloud and from mobile applications, besides their own. This is the reason why integration tools must adapt themselves to handle with high volumes of data, and to exploit the scalability of cloud computational resources without increasing enterprise operations costs. Integration platforms are tools that integrate enterprises’ applications through integration processes, which are nothing but workflows composed of a set of atomic tasks connected through communication channels. Many integration platforms schedule tasks to be executed by computational resources through the First-in-first-out heuristic. This article proposes a Queue-priority algorithm that uses a novel heuristic and tackles high volumes of data in the task scheduling of integration processes. This heuristic is optimized by the Particle Swarm Optimization computational method. The results of our experiments were confirmed by statistical tests, and validated the proposal as a feasible alternative to improve integration platforms in the execution of integration processes under a high volume of data.
