The development of Information Technology (IT) demands the integration of systems (legacy or new), so that they can operate in a distributed way and promoting the reuse of design, code and ...information in a high granularity level. Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) plays a fundamental role in this scenario. It can be conducted by different means, for example, by sharing the access to databases or using Web Services (WS). Both solutions are being adopted by organizations, although they present advantages and disadvantages that should be analysed. Several restrictions can be present in the particular integration scenario, causing problems to be solved before deciding if the integration should be done by data access or WS. So, this work has the objective of documenting these problems and solutions in the pattern format, in order to make available to other developers the knowledge acquired when doing EAI. These solutions can be used to improve reuse in certain integration contexts, depending on the organization business rules.
The software systems grow rapidly with the development of software technologies. Traditional Enterprise Application Integration technology can not adapt to the rapid increase in the Enterprise ...Information Systems. In SOA, different development tools can interact with each other to realize integration. With standard protocol, Web can integrate all kinds of heterogeneous system into current system conveniently and quickly, especially provide a high-quality and low-cost solution to enterprise application integration. Using SOA technology to realize EAI will resolve all sorts of shortage in EAI technology among distributed different- structure systems, moreover it makes the integration of application programs faster, easier and more effective than before. This paper introduces the integration of enterprise application, then analyzing the architectures and key technologies of SOA, propose a SOA-based solution to the integration of enterprise application realized via J2EE.

The healthcare enterprises are very disconnected. This paper intends to propose a solution that will provide citizens, businesses and medical enterprises with improved access to medical virtual ...public services. Referred medical services are based on existing national medical Web services and which support medically required services provided by physicians and supplementary health care practitioners, laboratory services and diagnostic procedures, clinics and hospitals’ services. Requirements and specific rules of these medical services are considered, and personalization of user preferences will to be supported. The architecture is based on adaptable process management technologies, allowing for virtual services which are dynamically combined from existing national medical services. In this way, a comprehensive workflow process is set up, allowing for service-level agreements, an audit trail and explanation of the process to the end user. The process engine operates on top of a virtual repository, providing a high-level semantic view of information retrieved from heterogeneous information sources, such as national sources of medical services. The system relies on a security framework to ensure all high-level security requirements are met. System’s architecture is business oriented: it focuses on Service Oriented Architecture - SOA concepts, asynchronously combining Web services, Business Process Management – BPM rules and BPEL standards.
A large enterprise is typically organized as collection of many business divisions, many corporate functions and many shared services. Our client is such an enterprise with business divisions having ...high level of autonomy in their operations. This autonomy has resulted into each business division having its own integrated business solution hardwiring its operational functions. Nevertheless, these business units need to integrate with corporate functions and shared services on real-time as well on loosely coupled basis. Hence the client has chosen to deploy an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) for integration among applications residing inside the business divisions with the applications belonging to corporate functions and shared services. This paper shares the ESB deployment experience that could be useful for the enterprises undertaking similar endeavors. In particular, this paper shows how the integration requirements were mapped to various capabilities of ESB and shares the lessons learned during the implementation.

A workflow that covers business processes and spatial processes requires a geographic information system (GIS) and an enterprise information system for capturing, representing and computing these ...processes. This paper first discusses how the respective information systems can capture business processes and spatial processes. It then introduces a lifecycle for integrated workflows: Pieces of workload are shared between the GIS and the enterprise information system in a sequenced manner. Here, web services are suggested to carry out the necessary communication between the two information systems. They help to overcome software architectures that separate information systems. In this paper, the workflow lifecycle is applied to the integrated use of a GIS and a customer relationship management system (CRM) in an emergency management scenario. A prototype is presented as a proof-of-concept.

With new developments such as cloud computing and SOA, integrating different applications is becoming increasingly important. We observed that many organizations have difficulties in the selection of ...a suitable application-integration solution. In this paper we present a method for the selection of enterprise application integration solutions. This method supports organizations in choosing solutions that consist of both technological and organizational measures. We used an assembly-based method engineering approach to construct the method. We validated the method using a case study and expert reviews.

In ...his keynote address, IDS Scheer founder August- Wilhelm Scheer discussed the task of mapping business processes for employees. He stressed, however, the importance of striking a balance between the number of rules needed to complete a task effectively without getting too bogged-down in process. "When you define too many rules it leads to bureaucracy, and everybody does only the things, which are pre-defined. But when you don't define any rules it leads to chaos," Scheer said. "We need some rules but the art is to find the right number of rules so you have both structure and the freedom to be creative." When that company was acquired by IDS Scheer in 2002, his group became IDS Scheer Canada and now focuses Canada-wide on reselling SAP, SAP services, and selling IDS Scheer's Aris suite of tools.
