Thin lamellae, corresponding to the layer components of structural glued members, i.e., 2-ply or 3-ply glued flooring, can be manufactured in re-sawing operations of kiln-dried wood blocks or in wet ...technologies, which currently seem to be more common because of the shorter drying time. The re-sawing process in wet technology is conducted on dedicated thin-cutting band sawing machines with stellite-tipped band saws. The goal of this research was to demonstrate the capacity of surface production (m2/ tool life) of visible layers of oak engineered flooring composites in a function of both a new band saw and a re-sharpened band saw blade. Additionally, the state of teeth of each band saw blade was examined at the end of the tool life. A series of cutting tests were performed in sawmill production conditions. The conducted tests revealed that a three times higher capacity of surface production was obtained for the new tool compared to re-sharpened tool. Additional microscopic observations of some re-sharpened teeth showed deformed plastic characteristics.
The article analyzes the cutting process of hard bars. Investigations conducted in industrial conditions demonstrated the presence of surface errors in the machined workpieces in the form of ...washboard patterns. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of cutting on band sawing machines with different band saw blades. The cutting processes were conducted on three different horizontal band sawing machine types. Analyzed material was an alloy steel Ø40 mm rod with a hardened surface covered with a thin layer of chromium. The hardness of the outer layer was 547 HV with a core hardness of 180 HV. The surface topography measurements of the processed workpieces were carried out with the 3D Optical Profiler, which supplied information on the irregularities of the processed material texture. In each of the analyzed cases, a corrugated surface was obtained after sawing, which is the effect of the occurrence of the washboarding phenomenon, despite the fact that the teeth of each band saw had variable pitches. The washboarding phenomenon when cutting rods with hard surfaces is caused by the phenomenon of wave regeneration. Despite the use of variable pitch saw blades, the cutting process results in rippling of the sawn surface, which is caused by the high hardness of the outer layer of the workpiece, as well as by the type of tool with spring setting of teeth.
In the paper chatter detection in band sawing is considered as a signal processing and classification problem. A multi-sensory experimental setup was established on an industrial band saw including ...sound, acceleration and cutting force, and measurements. Based on an experimental analysis sound signal is shown to be the most appropriate for chatter detection, therefore a sound-based online chatter detection method is proposed. The method consists of a sound signal pre-processing with Short-Time Fourier Transform, extraction of features in frequency space with optimal threshold and application of Quadratic Discriminant Analysis for chatter detection. The proposed method tested with twofold cross validation yields over 96% success of chatter detection.
The paper presents recurrence plot based stability analysis of the horizontal band sawing process of structural steel profiles. The analysis is performed in the parameter space defined by the cutting ...speed, the distance between the blade supports, and the feed rate. The corresponding stability diagrams have been constructed using the recurrence plot characteristic, the determinism of the sound pressure emitted by the process, which quantifies the process predictability. The topology of the experimentally obtained stability diagrams revealed non-linear non-monotonic dynamic behaviour, which made two different chatter avoidance strategies possible by cutting speed variation.
Purpose
– Reliability analysis is required to identify the components or subsystems with low reliability for a given designed performance. Life cycle cost analysis helps understand the cost ...implications over the entire life span of a product. The purpose of this paper is to present a case study describing reliability analysis and life cycle cost optimization of a band saw cutting machine manufactured and used in India.
Design/methodology/approach
– The data required for reliability analysis is collected from the manufacturer and users of band saw cutting machine. The parameters of failure distribution have been estimated by using ReliaSoft’s Weibull++6 software. The life cycle cost is divided into various cost elements such as acquisition cost, operation cost, failure cost, support cost and net salvage value.
Findings
– The results of the analysis show that the components such as band wheel bearing, guide roller bearing, limit switch, carbide pad, hydraulic cylinder oil seal, control panel dial, control panel and solenoid valve are critical from reliability and life cycle cost analysis perspective.
Originality/value
– With certain design changes it is found that the reliability of the system is increased by 15.85 percent while the life cycle cost is reduced by 22.09 percent. The study also shows that the reliability analysis is useful for deciding maintenance intervals.
In bandsaw machines, it is desired to feed the bandsaw blade into the workpiece with an appropriate feeding force in order to perform an efficient cutting operation. This can be accomplished by ...controlling the feed rate and thrust force by accurately detecting the cutting resistance against the bandsaw blade during cutting operation. In this study, a neural-fuzzy-based force model for controlling band sawing process was established. Cutting parameters were continuously updated by a secondary neural network, to compensate the effect of environmental disturbances. Required feed rate and cutting speed were adjusted by developed fuzzy logic controller. Results of cutting experiments using several steel specimens show that the developed neural-fuzzy system performs well in real time in controlling cutting speed and feed rate during band sawing. A material identification system was developed by using the measured cutting forces. Materials were identified at the beginning of the cutting operation and cutting force model was updated by using the detected material type. Consequently, cutting speed and feed rate were adjusted by using the updated model. The new methodology is found to be easily integrable to existing production systems.
As a kind of commonly used tools, junior hacksaw plays an important role in our daily life. A new kind of bimetal band saw taken low carbon medium alloy steel X32 as the backing material and the ...high-speed steel M42 as the saw tooth material is developed. In this paper, a new method to machine the bimetal band saw with wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is introduced. The processing route for common tooth profile is calculated. The fixture with specific angles is designed with CAD software (proe5.0) and machined with 3D printing technology. The experiments show that bimetal band saw machined with WEDM method has better surface quality compared with that machined through the traditional grinding process. Without any burrs, the new bimetal band saw is more resistant to wear and has a longer service life.
The two-cylinder drive is one of many commonly used mechanical drive forms. Its synchronous control accuracy determines the movement accuracy of the working machinery. The paper established the ...mathematical model for the two-cylinder electro-hydraulic servo synchronous drive system, and revealed that the two-cylinder horizontal electro-hydraulic synchronous drive system has the cascade form of the linear system with the nonlinear system. Taking the band sawing machine and the broaching machine as the application object, the paper analyzed their compositions and synchronization CNC systems. Aiming at the dual-cylinder drive form for the broaching machine, the IPSO-PID synchronous controller of the two-cylinder system was designed. Through the digital simulation and actual testing, the results show that the IPSO-PID synchronous controller is faster in the tracking response speed and better in the synchronization performance than the conventional PID synchronization controller.
