In the past three decades, Blok scholars have devoted considerable research to the question of lyric organization in Blok's published collections of poetry. These studies pay particular attention to ...the lyric arrangements of the so-called 1921 canonical version of Blok's three volume collected works. Far less attention has been directed to Blok's previous publications. This dissertation examines the lyric arrangement "Golosa skripok," which is the fourth lyric section of Blok's collection entitled "Nocnye casy" (1911). Like the majority of Blok's lyric arrangements, GS is not the product of a single lyric inspiration. It is rather a reworking of previously written materials into a new and complex whole. The lyrics of GS were written over a period of three years and are quite diverse. They are not unified by time, place or character. They include both the very philosophical and the very erotic. However, on an abstract level the twenty lyrics of GS share various manifestations of the theme of union and the lack thereof. The dissertation examines the manner in which this abstract theme is uniquely explored within the arrangement. In particular, it examines the ordering of the lyrics as the key to a reading of GS. The dissertation proposes a basic structure formed by three pairs of lyrics across the center of the arrangement. The two sets of borders created by these pairings establish a search for harmony on a cosmic scale on the one side, and they end with the finality of human death on the other. The inner pair of lyrics reveals the specific source of disharmony, the theme of the lack of union, which is introduced in the very first lyric of GS. It is the problem of many loves where there had existed only one. The dissertation goes on to examine the connection between the problem of many loves and Blok's particular struggle with love at the time he was compiling GS. The lyrics that lie between the three basic pairs create a kind of story within a story. Each story is associated with a different real-life love. Each ends with the lyric subject waiting for the arrival of the lyric heroine and death. However, the expectation of union in death, which these stories set up, is frustrated in the end. The arrangement does not end with union in death, but with death in resigned isolation.
Although Leskov is not unique in creating a myth peculiar to his art, my contention in this dissertation is to show that his innovation goes beyond purely linguistic forms and into the area of ...genres. Leskov, by modeling his characters, their language and the prose of his stories on folklore, created a new literary genre out of what used to be verbal folk or religious art. In doing so, he enabled his prose to escape the fate of becoming a stylization of folklore narratives and to instead enter into standard literary usage in its own right. The prose of Zoshchenko, Babel, and later Shukshin may be seen as a convincing proof of Leskov's success. This dissertation analyzes three aspects of Leskov's narrative technique: (1) a linguistic aspect; (2) a mythologizing aspect; and (3) character development. One chapter is dedicated to the examination of some parallels between Avvakum's Life and Leskov's Enchanted Wanderer. Leskov achieves an effect of multi-dimensionality in his characterization and settings with the help of a device I call "image-layering". Leskov likens his heroes' physical appearance and behavior to those of the heroes of ancient Greece, or to those populating apocrypha and folk legends. Almost unnoticeably he enshrouds them in associative imagery, later removing these layers of association just as unobtrusively, leaving a sediment of images in the reader's memory. As a result, the reality of Leskov's characters is a multifaceted world, complete and self-sufficient. This world is similar to the world of epic and folktales but with an added cultural diversity. Leskov's method of mythologizing is akin to that of folklore. Leskov's myth of Russia is the history of the everyday miracles and those who witness them within the bounds of arbitrary geographic borders. Occasionally, a hero may fall outside these political and geographic boundaries. Yet, for Leskov he remains truly Russian because he is still of that mythical land, the history of which can only be measured by the miracles of its dwellers--the dwellers in God's house.

So when the chief executive officer of Rabobank N.A., which recently acquired Community Bank of Central California, heard a suggestion the bank contribute to the National Steinbeck Center, he ...embraced the idea to the tune of $2 million. The National Steinbeck Center will rename its agriculture wing the Rabobank Agriculture Museum after receiving the gift from the Dutch financial institution. The gift is the largest private donation the center has ever received. The $2 million grant also gives Rabobank 20-year naming rights for the Steinbeck Center's agricultural wing. Come this summer, when all the Community Bank signs are scheduled to be replaced with the Rabobank logo, the Valley of the World exhibit will be housed at the Rabobank Agriculture Museum.
