It's springtime in Flagstaff, Ariz., a provincial capital of knotty pines and mountain breezes, 7,000 feet above the desert plains that bake Tucson and Phoenix to the south. While the folks downstate ...bask in their perennial sunshine, the 35,000 residents of Flagstaff are still rubbing the winter chill out of their bones and putting away the shovels and snowblowers that cleared last season's average 100-inch snowfall. Shopkeepers in Flagstaff clearly have different needs to serve than do retailers in Southern Arizona. But until recently, a visitor to any Sears, Roebuck and Co. outlet in the Grand Canyon State could find no evidence that Sears merchandise managers understood the differences. (excerpt)

In an expected move, Dickstein Partners Inc took control of Hills Stores Co, replacing its board of directors with Dickstein nominees and appointing Mark Dickstein chairman of the department store ...chain. Michael Bozic, president and CEO of Hills, resigned and will be replaced by Chaim Edelstein.
Sears, Roebuck and Co. said Friday that a federal judge has ruled in Sears favor on charges by the Consumer Product Safety Commission involving the sale of lawn darts. In her ruling, District of ...Columbia Federal Court Judge Joyce Hens Green said, "the diligent efforts undertaken by Sears to date, compel the denial of the Commission's motion (that Sears be held in contempt of court)." "The evidence shows that Sears has taken all possible steps to eliminate the sale of lawn darts in its stores. In fact," Judge Green continues, "Sears actions went far beyond the requirements of the decree (which permitted continued sale of lawn darts) and totally banned further sale of lawn darts in its stores. Rather than being a reluctant and recalcitrant violator, Sears took immediate and affirmative steps to comply with the decree." (excerpt)
In its announcement today, Sears said nothing about either the catalogue or furniture operations or about Mr. Edward A. Brennan. The only Sears executive to announce he was stepping down was Michael ...Bozic, who was replaced by Mr. Brennan last fall as chairman of the merchandise group. Mr. Bozic, whose responsibilities were greatly reduced in that change, will leave to pursue other business interests. 'Expecting More' Sears acknowledges that its expenses are too high. This overhead accounts for roughly 30 percent of sales at Sears compared with roughly half that at the discounters. Although Sears officials argue that comparisons with the discounters are unfair because Sears sells many more items, they concede that the company's costs must come down in the areas where it does compete with the discounters -- in clothing and small appliances, for example. Analysts said that Sears was well under way toward reaching that goal but that more cost cutting could be necessary. Because of the weak economy and the deep recession in appliance sales, Sears's retail revenues are barely growing. With the merchandise group essentially a break-even operation and with Sears's Coldwell Banker real estate arm and its Allstate insurance division also suffering, the corporation is being sustained by Dean Witter. Thanks to continue growth in sales and profits from its Discover card operation, Dean Witter reported fourth-quarter income of $56.8 million, up from $48.4 million in 1989.
