\mathbf{Background:} Environmental reporting is an indispensable part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) report, which has become a main genre of nonfinancial disclosure for corporations. ...The present study explores how companies use metaphors to construct their role in the relationship with the environment. \mathbf{Literature review:} Previous studies tend to focus on environmental metaphors in genres such as newspapers, blogs, and scientific discourse, but rarely attend to the genre of corporate environmental reporting. \mathbf{Research questions:} 1. What metaphors are used by banking and energy companies to represent their role in the relationship with the environment? Are there similarities or differences across cultures? 2. What are their representations in terms of the corporate role, and what impacts do they have on the environment from an ecolinguistic perspective? 3. Why are these metaphors used for environmental communication? \mathbf{Research methodology:} The study investigates a corpus of 180 CSR reports published by Chinese, US, and Italian companies with the framework of critical metaphor analysis combined with genre analysis, so as to approach metaphor use from a cross-cultural perspective. \mathbf{Results and conclusions:} The study highlights both universal metaphors (manager, protector, and traveler) and culture-specific metaphors (the bee metaphor in Chinese, the steward metaphor in English, and the fighter metaphor in Italian) across three languages, which are used to represent the company's good intentions, caring attitude, and responsible behavior, contributing to building an environmentally responsible corporate image. Some of the metaphors seem useful in inspiring eco-constructive behavior, while others may bear eco-destructive connotations.

The Interpretative Theory of Translation (ITT) was first developed on the basis of empirical practice and observation of interpreting. Its core idea is that the interpreter understands the source ...language and grasps the intention conveyed by the source language, then breaks away from the external form of the source language and expresses the speaker’s intention in idiomatic target language. Business interpretation is characterized by being purposeful, extemporaneous, time-limited, and comprehensive. In view of these features, business interpreter should observe the principles of faithfulness and efficiency. The main purpose of interpretation, according to ITT, is to transfer the information and explain the true intention of the speaker. This paper, on the basis of real example analysis, puts forward two coping strategies—simplification strategy and adaptation strategy, under the guidance of ITT. Simplification means to simplify the content expressed by the speaker without changing the speaker’s real intention, whereas adaptation strategy totally forgets the original structure and tries to express the speaker’s intention. Compared with the simplification strategy, the adaptation strategy is more flexible, but the main purpose of both is to express the true intention of the speakers and promote business activities.
International students who speak English as an additional language report experiencing communication issues while completing their studies and work-integrated learning placements in a range of ...Anglophone countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Australia. To address this issue, accreditation and registration bodies for a number of health professions, such as social work and nursing, have advocated for increasing the test score requirements for university English language entry. However, from a sociolinguistic perspective, decisions concerning ways to address communication challenges need to take into account the unique communication skills required for functioning in specific workplace settings. It is therefore essential to identify the types of communication issues occurring during work-integrated learning opportunities (e.g. placement) and to then assess whether these should be addressed by raising general English proficiency or providing structured learning opportunities for profession-specific communication development within the course content. The present study uses sociolinguistic theory to examine placement educators’ perspectives on international students’ communication issues using the context of social work placement. It draws on the thematic analysis of interviews with 15 placement educators in Australia. One major finding is that international students’ general proficiency or ability to use specific linguistic tools (pragmalinguistic competence) is not a key area of concern for educators. The main challenge seems to involve the students’ understanding of sociocultural norms underlying workplace communication (sociopragmatic competence). This finding suggests that, rather than increasing English language entry requirements, universities need to provide international students opportunities to develop their sociopragmatic competence both before and during placement. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations aimed at supporting international students who speak English as an additional language to develop their workplace communication during their studies.

However, the effect of public relations and communication on promoting innovation remained insignificant, as a slight agreement was shown regarding the relevant phenomenon. It was concluded that economic sustainability holds great significance in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework, and communication ensures they are achieved in the best possible manner. As a result, Emirates-based corporate sector organizations acknowledge the significance of public relations and communication and integrate these strategies into their comprehensive business plans to attain sustainable economic growth and development.
The objective of this research is to contribute to applied linguistic theory and to provide insights into the world of workplace telephone conversation. The study examines the structure of telephone ...call centre dialogues. The interaction entails a wide range of customer service inquiries and problem-solving objectives, in which the Customer Service Representative (CSR) responds to inquiries while attempting to maintain a positive interpersonal interaction with the customer. We chose and evaluated a representative sample of calls having complex negotiation structure or even a communication breakdown. We describe how the conversation progresses and how one response leads to the next in problematic calls with faulty exchange structure (Halliday, 1985, 1994; Ventola, 1987). The data consist of audio recordings of Filipino Customer Service Representatives interacting with English-speaking American customers during commercial customer-service phone calls. 20 representative calls with complex negotiation structure were chosen from approximately 2,000 calls. We used Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which provides a comprehensive theoretical framework that may be used as an effective analytical tool, to investigate the semantics in terms of logical relations of the exchange structure in the transcripts.
