Anahtar Kelimeler: DASS, diş hekimliği eğitimi, depresyon, kariyer motivasyonu, lisansüstü
Introduction The growing global demand for foreign language learning contrasts sharply with the shortage of second language teachers. In Chinese as a second language (CSL) education, although the ...number of pre-service CSL teachers is increasing, few continue in the profession after completing their teacher education courses. Methods To investigate the reasons behind this trend, this longitudinal narrative inquiry examined the career motivations of three participants during their teaching practicum. The study focused on identifying key narrative clues based on metaphors emerging from their narratives. Results The research found that the participants’ career motivations were influenced by their teaching practice and experienced various dynamic changes. Key motivational factors included self-efficacy and intrinsic self-fulfillment, with a notable influence from the unique cross-cultural motivation associated with second language teaching. Discussion The study underscores the significant role of narratives and metaphors in understanding changes in teacher career motivations. It suggests that enhancing self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation, alongside recognizing cross-cultural motivations, could be crucial in addressing the retention issues among pre-service CSL teachers.

With the profound transformation of Chinese journalism under the commercialized trend of thoughts, there is a debate on whether Chinese journalists still maintain the public service ideal or just ...regard it simply as a job. In other words, is journalism a “vocation” or a “profession”? Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an empirical study on journalistic roles. Drawing on the self-determination theory, this study constructs a framework of “career motivation–news attitude” to build a bridge between role orientations and performance, in order to comprehensively understand the Chinese journalistic roles. In this study, a quota sampling survey (n = 1000), multiple linear regression (MLR), and structural equation modeling (SEM) are used to examine the influence of advocacy and utilitarian motivations on news efficacy and news avoidance, corresponding to news production and consumption attitudes. Furthermore, the study divides the journalistic roles in China into four categories: purposive advocate professionals, dedicated advocate professionals, workaday journalists, and adrift journalists. The results show that advocacy motivation, or the public service ideal, is more significant than utilitarian motivation in the journalistic roles. The former is associated with higher news efficacy and lower news avoidance, while the latter is only associated with higher news avoidance. The study also discusses the demographic factors of journalistic career motivations.

The recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) present both challenges and opportunities for educational practitioners. A new AI curriculum has been developed and piloted in many primary schools ...in Beijing, China. The present study had two aims: (1) to test the factor structure of students’ motivation to learn AI and (2) to examine possible gender differences in students’ motivation to learn AI. This online questionnaire–based research recruited 420 primary students from the piloting schools. Structural equation modeling was employed to test a hypothesized model comprising six motivational factors and strategies: (1) intrinsic motivation, (2) career motivation, (3) attention, (4) relevance, (5) confidence, and (6) satisfaction. The study discovered intrinsic motivation to have the strongest influence on career motivation, while the motivational strategies of attention, relevance, and confidence also influenced career motivation. Additionally, compared with female students, male students scored higher in terms of motivational factors and strategies. The findings serve as a reference for the future development of AI curricula and instruction.
Abstract Scholarly research on teachers’ job satisfaction has recently attracted the attention of researchers. However, only few studies have focused on the factors that address teachers’ job ...satisfaction, as to reveal whether and to what extent teachers’ career motivations, especially social utility motivation, affect job satisfaction. Existing literature suggests that social utility motivation is likely to affect the factors such as teachers’ commitment, teaching practices, self-efficacy, and professionalism, which can be considered necessary for job satisfaction. In this context, this study aims to reveal the effect of teachers’ social utility motivation on job satisfaction and the mediating effect performed by instructional practice and teacher innovation, using data from the TALIS 2018 dataset. Based on our research questions, we used data teacher questionnaires gathered in Türkiye. After accounting for missing values, the structural equation modeling analysis 2539 teachers from Türkiye. In the study, the researchers applied a mediation analysis of structural equation modeling to test the proposed model. The results of the analysis confirm that instructional practice and teacher innovation mediate between social utility motivation and job satisfaction. This research is expected to contribute to the studies that focus on the effects of social utility motivation on job satisfaction.
Online graduate degree programs, particularly in technical disciplines, represent a fast-growing market for higher education institutions. Yet, it is unclear how online degree programs fit within ...students' educational investment decisions and career goals. Based on a foundation of human capital theory, and using data from a 2017 survey of students enrolled in an online master's degree program in computer science at a highly ranked US university, this study explores how motivation for seeking an online graduate degree in computer science varies by student demographics and professional background/preparation. Results show two student markets: one for career mobility, including job advancement and/or career change, and another for skill building without consideration of mobility. Our results also show that while students come from diverse backgrounds, the primary driving factor for seeking the degree is determined by relevant professional experience. Implications for future study and online instructional design are discussed.
•Online graduate students in computing are demographically and professionally diverse.•Computing human capital is a key determinant of career goals.•Job/career mobility is not always the motivation for pursuing an online graduate degree.•International students may view online terminal master's degrees as stepping stones to the PhD.
