Recursive filtering for nonlinear systems, one of the core technologies of modern industrial systems, is an ever-increasing research topic from the control and computer communities. Some challenges ...from communication scheduling, limited bandwidth as well as security vulnerability have to be seriously handled though the applications of communication technologies bring into some conveniences. As such, it is of utmost significance in theory and great importance in applications to establish engineering-feasible recursive filtering algorithms for networked nonlinear systems. This paper focuses on the development of this topic and provides an up-to-date survey of the existing nonlinear filtering techniques. The introduction of three classes of communication protocols is first presented in great detail, and then comprehensive reviews and summaries of the nonlinear recursive filtering problems with Gaussian/non-Gaussian noises are elaborated according to different strategies responding to nonlinear functions or noises. Particularly, the reviews are layout from the extended Kalman filtering, the unscented/cubature Kalman filtering, the set-membership filtering as well as the
filtering. Furthermore, several challenging issues are raised to stimulate further related theoretical research and practical applications in this field.
Energy management is one of the main challenges in Microgrids (MGs) applied to Smart Buildings (SBs). Hence, more studies are indispensable to consider both modeling and operating aspects to utilize ...the upcoming results of the system for the different applications. This paper presents a novel energy management architecture model based on complete Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system duties in an educational building with an MG Laboratory (Lab) testbed, which is named LAMBDA at the Electrical and Energy Engineering Department of the Sapienza University of Rome. The LAMBDA MG Lab simulates in a small scale a SB and is connected with the DIAEE electrical network. LAMBDA MG is composed of a Photovoltaic generator (PV), a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a smart switchboard (SW), and different classified loads (critical, essential, and normal) some of which are manageable and controllable (lighting, air conditioning, smart plugs operating into the LAB). The aim of the LAMBDA implementation is making the DIAEE smart for energy saving purposes. In the LAMBDA Lab, the communication architecture consists in a complex of master/slave units and actuators carried out by two main international standards, Modbus (industrial serial standard for electrical and technical monitoring systems) and Konnex (an open standard for commercial and domestic building automation). Making the electrical department smart causes to reduce the required power from the main grid. Hence, to achieve the aims, results have been investigated in two modes. Initially, the real-time mode based on the SCADA system, which reveals real daily power consumption and production of different sources and loads. Next, the simulation part is assigned to shows the behavior of the main grid, loads and BESS charging and discharging based on energy management system. Finally, the proposed model has been examined in different scenarios and evaluated from the economic aspect.

In recent years, the communication-protocol-based synthesis and analysis issues have gained substantial research interest owing mainly to their significance in networked systems. In this work, we ...survey the control and filtering problems of networked systems under the effects induced by communication protocols. First, we introduce the engineering background of networked systems as well as the theoretical frameworks established to deal with the communication-protocol-based analysis and synthesis problems. Then, recent advances (especially the latest results) are reviewed on the stability analysis issue subject to protocol scheduling. Subsequently, the particular effort is devoted to presenting the latest progress on various communication-protocol-based control and filtering problems according to the characteristics of networked systems (e.g. time-varying nature, random behaviours, types of parameter uncertainties, and kinds of distributed structure). After that, we provide a systematic review of the communication-protocol-based fault diagnosis problems. Finally, some research challenges of communication-protocol-based control and filtering problems are outlined for future research.
Radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless sensors networks (WSNs) are two fundamental pillars that enable the Internet of Things (IoT). RFID systems are able to identify and track devices, ...whilst WSNs cooperate to gather and provide information from interconnected sensors. This involves challenges, for example, in transforming RFID systems with identification capabilities into sensing and computational platforms, as well as considering them as architectures of wirelessly connected sensing tags. This, together with the latest advances in WSNs and with the integration of both technologies, has resulted in the opportunity to develop novel IoT applications. This paper presents a review of these two technologies and the obstacles and challenges that need to be overcome. Some of these challenges are the efficiency of the energy harvesting, communication interference, fault tolerance, higher capacities to handling data processing, cost feasibility, and an appropriate integration of these factors. Additionally, two emerging trends in IoT are reviewed: the combination of RFID and WSNs in order to exploit their advantages and complement their limitations, and wearable sensors, which enable new promising IoT applications.
This paper is concerned with the neural-network-based (NN-based) output-feedback control issue for a class of nonlinear systems. For the purpose of effectively mitigating the phenomena of data ...congestion/collision, the stochastic communication protocols are favorably utilized to orchestrate the data transmissions, and the resultant closed-loop plant is represented by a so-called protocol-induced Markovian jump system with uncertain transition probability matrices. Taking such an uncertainty probability into account, a novel iterative adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is developed to obtain the desired suboptimal solution with the help of auxiliary quasi-HJB equation, and the algorithm convergence is also investigated via the intensive use of the mathematical analysis. In this ADP framework, an NN-based observer with a novel adaptive tuning law is first adopted to reconstruct the system states. Then, based on the reconfigurable system, an actor–critic NN scheme with online learning is developed to realize the considered control strategy. Furthermore, in light of the Lyapunov theory, some sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the stability of the zero equilibrium point of the closed-loop system as well as the boundedness of the estimation errors for critic and actor NN weights. Finally, a simulation example is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed suboptimal control scheme.
Radio frequency (RF) energy transfer and harvesting techniques have recently become alternative methods to power the next-generation wireless networks. As this emerging technology enables proactive ...energy replenishment of wireless devices, it is advantageous in supporting applications with quality-of-service requirements. In this paper, we present a comprehensive literature review on the research progresses in wireless networks with RF energy harvesting capability, which is referred to as RF energy harvesting networks (RF-EHNs). First, we present an overview of the RF-EHNs including system architecture, RF energy harvesting techniques, and existing applications. Then, we present the background in circuit design as well as the state-of-the-art circuitry implementations and review the communication protocols specially designed for RF-EHNs. We also explore various key design issues in the development of RF-EHNs according to the network types, i.e., single-hop networks, multiantenna networks, relay networks, and cognitive radio networks. Finally, we envision some open research directions.
Towards a digital and flexible implementation of triggering conditions for multi-agent systems, we propose a sampled-data framework with discrete-time controllers and event detectors. An asynchronous ...sampling mechanism between agents is considered, where the sampling period and triggering parameters are allowed to be chosen by each agent independently. It is shown that consensus can be reached under the proposed control and communication schemes for graphs that contain a directed spanning tree. Simulation results are given to illustrate the utility of the proposed method.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) couples IoT technologies with healthcare services in order to support real-time, remote patient monitoring and treatment. However, the interconnectivity of ...critical medical devices with other systems in various network layers creates new opportunities for remote adversaries. Since most of the communication protocols have not been specifically designed for the needs of connected medical devices, there is a need to classify the available IoT communication technologies in terms of security. In this paper we classify IoT communication protocols, with respect to their application in IoMT. Then we describe the main characteristics of IoT communication protocols used at the perception, network and application layer of medical devices. We examine the inherent security characteristics and limitations of IoMT-specific communication protocols. Based on realistic attacks we identify available mitigation controls that may be applied to secure IoMT communications, as well as existing research and implementation gaps.
Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) systems have the potential to increase traffic throughput by allowing smaller headway between vehicles and moving vehicles safely in a platoon at a ...harmonized speed. CACC systems have been attracting significant attention from both academia and industry since connectivity between vehicles will become mandatory for new vehicles in the USA in the near future. In this paper, we review three basic and important aspects of CACC systems: communications, driver characteristics, and controls to identify the most challenging issues for their real-world deployment. Different routing protocols that support the data communication requirements between vehicles in the CACC platoon are reviewed. Promising and suitable protocols are identified. Driver characteristics related issues, such as how to keep drivers engaged in driving tasks during CACC operations, are discussed. To achieve mass acceptance, the control design needs to depict real-world traffic variability such as communication effects, driver behavior, and traffic composition. Thus, this paper also discusses the issues that existing CACC control modules face when considering close to ideal driving conditions.
