Background: Thesium L. is the largest genus in the family Santalaceae (sandalwood family). The last taxonomic revision of the southern African species dates back to 1925. An urgent revision of the ...genus is required as indicated in a recent national biosystematics research strategy for South Africa. Objectives: To revise the Thesium confine species complex (Thesium durum, T. confine and Thesium spartioides) and to update the typification, nomenclature, descriptions and distribution ranges. Method: Morphological characters were studied using own field collections as well as herbarium specimens from K, NU, PRE and PRU and images on Global Plants (JSTOR). Distribution ranges of the studied species were updated. Results: An examination of morphological characters revealed great similarity between T. spartioides and T. confine. Both species have an herbaceous habit, decumbent growth form, terminal (or less frequently axillary) inflorescences and a sympatric northern distribution in South Africa. Thesium durum differs from T. spartioides and T. confine in having a shrubby habit, erect growth form and axillary inflorescences and occurs in the southern part of South Africa. Conclusion: Thesium spartioides is synonymised under T. confine, and T. durum is retained as a separate species.
The adjective "geographic" does not draw upon what is conceived and opposed to "cultural" elements, but what is resultant of the meeting and exploration of cultural trajectories - boundaries that men ...establish and realize to contact with the earth's reality, and their societies therein. The historian Lucien Febvre, Paul Vidal de La Blache's student and friend, wrote "in geography no issue is more important than subdivisions one". At the concept of natural frontiers (that until the 700's, indicated a physical element with greater visibility and stability over and above any man's work), during the eighteenth century, the problem of subdivision brought with it complications - ergo, the identification of a criterion to divide the earth surface in parts. Now since the evidence of each geographical representation is actually the product of a self performative mechanism (Dematteis), this should ensure that we contribute, with all our collective practices, to give a meaning and a symbolic function to physical objects, frontiers, boundaries and limits. In this respect, individual views lose the often fixed aspect of personal opinion, and the connotation of what is "natural", assumes a different cognitive meaning, along with the political and symbolic points of view that mankind often embraces.

Bambini e animali condividono il loro essere “assoggettati”: mentre l’adulto è soggetto tout court, ...il bambino lo deve ancora diventare e l’animale è trattato come polo opposto alla soggettività (oppure, ma non è molto diverso, come soggetto surrogato). Il punto di partenza è la domanda “che cosa è un bambino?”; apertamente socratica, questa domanda serve a incrinare i sedimenti di sapere depositatisi sul senso comune circa la “vera natura” del soggetto.

is solved by using two different methods, where, in the first, a trial wave function, ...consisting of a hydrogen-like function times a cutoff factor that ensures fulfillment of Dirichlet boundary condition, is proposed, whereas in the second, the radial Schrödinger equation is solved by means of an accurate numerical technique. We computed the energies for the ground and first excited states of S-, P-, and D-symmetry, as well as dipole transitions, oscillator strengths, and a few state lifetimes. Although the variational method and the numerical solution are found to give similar qualitative behaviours, which, in general, compare reasonably well with some results published previously, the 2p state lifetimes obtained in the present calculations appear to be at variance with the latter at some particular box radii.
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to provide an insight about the molecule distribution and thermophysical properties of n-heptacosane confined in the (25, 25) single-walled carbon ...nanotube (CNT). The results show that an orderly distribution of n-heptacosane molecules along the CNT inner wall is clearly observed. Meanwhile, n-heptacosane confined in CNT exhibits an increased self-diffusion coefficient, a decreased melting point and an enhanced thermal conductivity, compared to the bulk. The simulations reveal that MD is an effective and convenient method to understand the variation characteristics of alkane-based phase change materials confined in CNT on molecular and atomic scale.
Nel 1997 un intervento di politica economica regionale, legittimato da una specifica normativa nazionale, cercò di riassorbire l’elevato flusso di consumatori del Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) che si ...recavano in Slovenia per fare rifornimento di carburante. Tale manovra introdusse un meccanismo di riduzione territoriale dei prezzi nazionali alla pompa sottomesso all’ipotesi di pareggio di bilancio per le casse regionali, riservando comunque un determinato introito da versare all’Erario nazionale. Dato che gli sconti venivano praticati per singolo veicolo posseduto dai privati cittadini residenti nella regione, ossia indistintamente dalle loro abitudini di rifornimento oltreconfine, affinché la manovra risultasse economicamente sostenibile era necessario che il volume di vendita recuperato fosse tale da compensare gli effetti finanziari degli sconti erogati. Proprio per capire come applicare la normativa e tarare il sistema di sconti differenziato territorialmente, l’amministrazione regionale commissionò uno studio preliminare all’Università degli studi di Udine. Più recentemente, gli stessi ricercatori hanno tracciato un bilancio complessivo dei primi dieci anni di manovra, analizzando nel 2009 anche il cambio di scenario del mercato regionale che portò alla crisi del meccanismo e, quindi, a una nuova mobilità transfrontaliera ai fini del rifornimento non solo verso la Slovenia, ma anche verso l’Austria e il Veneto. Questo lavoro intende fornire un quadro di sintesi piuttosto completo per il periodo 1997-2012, partendo dallo studio preliminare e mettendo anche in risalto il ruolo giocato dal sistema camerale regionale. Si tratta di un quadro quasi definitivo poiché nel 2010 il legislatore regionale ha approvato una nuova legge che, con un diverso meccanismo, ha trovato effettiva applicazione solo a partire dal mese di novembre 2011. Il passaggio dal vecchio al nuovo sistema costituisce, di fatto, un punto di rottura non solo dal punto di vista giuridico (non si parla più di "sconto", ma di "contributo"), ma anche dal punto di vista teorico poiché la nuova ripartizione territoriale è stata decisa su presupposti completamente diversi da quelli utilizzati, e qui proposti, nello studio preliminare del 1997. Il presente articolo parte necessariamente dal quadro normativo, in particolare dalla L. 549/1995 e dalla L.R. 47/1996 e dalle sue successive integrazioni. Questo perché la legislazione non solo regola di fatto la manovra economica messa in essere dal legislatore regionale, ma ha anche fissato alcuni limiti che sono stati rigorosamente applicati nello studio preliminare illustrato nei parr. 2 e 3. In particolare, il secondo paragrafo concentra l’attenzione sugli aspetti più prettamente statisticieconomici e territoriali proponendo il modello microeconomico di riferimento, basato sulla Cost-benefit analysis, che fornisce un supporto economico alla Cluster analysis di natura prettamente statistica. Inoltre, tale paragrafo illustrerà anche il processo di stima delle cinque curve di domanda territoriali e della curva prezzodistanza, quest’ultima necessaria per fornire al decisore pubblico un range di sconti per fascia rispettoso del criterio di proporzionalità inversa previsto dalla normativa. Nel terzo paragrafo, l’attenzione viene rivolta agli aspetti più finanziari, ossia all’analisi degli effetti sul bilancio regionale del FVG ricordando che, all’epoca, l’obiettivo principale era quello di scongiurare un suo disavanzo. Dopo aver illustrato uno scenario di partenza piuttosto prudenziale e riferito alla partizione in cinque fasce ottenuta per via teorica, sulla base della decisione presa dalla Giunta regionale, soluzione non prevista ex-ante poiché quest’ultima ha derogato rispetto ad alcuni limiti imposti dalla normativa, viene proposto una sintesi degli effetti finanziari stimati per i primi dieci anni di manovra. Nel quarto paragrafo viene illustrato un secondo studio, condotto nel 2009 sempre dai ricercatori dell’Università di Udine, relativo alle mutate condizioni di mercato indotte dall’entrata in crisi del meccanismo di sconti che, tutto sommato, aveva ben funzionato fino ad allora. Le evidenze empiriche di tale crisi hanno indotto il legislatore, nel 2010, a emanare una nuova normativa che prevede, di fatto, la fine del vecchio meccanismo e la nascita di uno nuovo con una differente articolazione territoriale e un diverso sistema di contributi all’acquisto di carburanti per autotrazione. Di conseguenza, il quinto paragrafo illustra questa novità normativa sottolineando nelle conclusioni che il meccanismo attuale, dopo un inizio promettente, è entrato poco dopo in crisi per effetto dell’aumento delle accise decretate dal governo nazionale.
In a search for new plant-derived biologically active compounds against malaria parasites, five essential oils extracted from the Cameroonian plants
Xylopia phloiodora, Pachypodanthium confine,
...Antidesma laciniatum, Xylopia aethiopica, and
Hexalobus crispiflorus were evaluated in regard to their anti-plasmodial activity against the W2 strain of
Plasmodium falciparum. The oils were obtained from the plants with 0.12, 0.13, 0.18, 0.6 and 0.1% yields (relatively to dried material weight) respectively. Analysis by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry identified mainly terpenoids, among which α-copaene, γ-cadinene, δ-cadinene , α-cadinol, spathulenol and caryophyllene oxide were most commonly found. The five oils were active against
Plasmodium falciparum in culture. The most effective was the oil of
Hexalobus crispiflorus, with an IC
50 of 2 μg/ml.
The anti-plasmodial activity of artemisinin suggests that other potent sesquiterpenes can be found in essential oils.
Dalla sua definizione nell’Agenda Europea sulla migrazione del 2015, l’approccio hotspot è stato introdotto in diverse zone di confine del territorio europeo. Questo specifico dispositivo confinario ...è contraddistinto dall’intreccio di discorso securitario e umanitario, delineando ciò che William Walters (2011) ha chiamato "confine umanitario". Analizzando il ruolo del sapere medico, l’articolo prende in esame procedure e pra-tiche all’opera all’interno degli hotspot. Le funzioni di identificazione, classifica-zione e selezione qualificano questa tecnologia di confine come un filtro che agisce per rallentare, bloccare, deviare le traiettorie della mobilità. A partire da una ricerca sul campo sull’hotspot di Pozzallo, il contributo indaga - attraverso un lavoro etnografico, interviste in profondità e l’analisi di artefatti bu-rocratici - le attività del personale sanitario, le loro esperienze e interazioni all’interno di questo complesso assemblage di confine. Viene quindi evidenziata la funzione del sapere medico come strumento biopolitico per il governo dei corpi, nella sua duplice dimensione di cura e controllo. Parallelamente, la relazione "me-dico-paziente" può produrre uno spazio per la messa in campo di contro-tattiche da parte dei soggetti catturati all’interno di questa tecnologia confinaria. Starting from its definition in the 2015 European Agenda on Migration, the "hotspot approach" has been adopted in different border zones within the Euro-pean boundaries. This specific border dispositive is framed within the discourses on security and humanitarianism, depicting what William Walters (2011) defines as the "humanitarian border". Focusing on the role of the medical expertise, the article examines procedures and practices at work inside the hotspot. The functions of identification, classification and selection characterize this border technology as a filter to decelerate, block, reroute mobility trajectories. Based on a research fieldwork on the hotspot of Pozzallo, Italy, the contribution examines - through ethnographical fieldwork, in-depth interviews and analysis of bureaucratic artefacts - the activities of medical staff, their experiences and inter-actions within this complex border assemblage. The function of the medical exper-tise is thus unveiled as a biopolitical tool to bodies’ governance, in its double di-mension of care and control. Concurrently, the "doctor-patient" relationship could give space to enact counter tactics by the subjects captured in this border technol-ogy.
L’articolo definisce alcuni aspetti del confine come tecnologia politica di selezione e governo della mobilità, individuando i tratti decisivi di un immaginario del confine, cioè di un sistema di ...significati istituenti che strutturano specifiche articolazioni di attori, discorsi, rappresentazioni e modalità operative. Tra il 2015 e il 2016 un incremento degli arrivi sulle coste italiane e la reintroduzione di controlli e blocchi ai confini da parte di Stati confinanti con l’Italia, hanno trasformato al-cune stazioni ferroviarie in nodi di transito di flussi di mobilità secondaria, deter-minando specifici scenari di emergenza. Facendo riferimento alla città di Como, l’autore indaga il modo in cui questa emergenza ha costituito, dentro e attorno alla stazione, spazi di visibilità, regimi discorsivi e interazioni tra differenti attori, evi-denziando le tensioni tra investimenti securitari, forme di assistenza e pratiche di resistenza. The paper defines some aspects of the border as a political technology for the selection and governance of mobility, identifying the decisive traits of a border imaginary, that is, a system of founding meanings that structure specific articulations of actors, discourses, representations and operating procedures. Between 2015 and 2016, an increase in arrivals on Italian coasts and the reintroduction of border controls and blockades by States bordering Italy, have transformed some railway stations into transit nodes of secondary mobility flows, defining emergency scenarios. Referring to the city of Como, the author investigates the way in which this emergency has constituted, in and around the station, spaces of visibility, discursive regimes and interactions between different actors, highlighting the tensions between securitarian approaches, forms of assistance and practices of resistance.
The Mediterranean region has always been during its long history a theater of migratory movements. During the 19th and 20th centuries this region has witnessed migrations related to the formation of ...Nation-States, wars and for some countries, the efforts of States to homogenize their population. The formation of national borders of the new States has forced some populations of the Mediterranean area to move towards the territories of other neighboring States. The migration of Anatolian Greeks to Greece and Turks from Greece to Turkey is one of the best examples of these obligatory movements of populations that had as a result a different perception of the Greek-Turkish border rather than a usual national border between two countries.
